PlayStation Plus 'buyouts' for devs confirmed by Sony

For gamers, PlayStation Plus' Instant Game Collection has been a tremendous deal, offering numerous "free" games as part of a subscription. But why do developers offer their games for free? Well, because some of them are getting paid for it, of course.

It was generally assumed that money would exchange hands for PlayStation Plus titles. However, this is one of the first times Sony has explicitly made clear that they will give money to select devs that give their games away for free on the service. PlayStation manager of developer relations Brian Silva told developers at IndieCade that they will offer "buyouts" to give away games on Plus for a month.

While numbers weren't disclosed, it's a proposal that makes sense for some developers. Futurlab, developer of the upcoming Velocity 2X, told GI.biz that putting their game on PlayStation Plus was "less about money and more about exposure, especially with a sequel coming."

And PlayStation Plus will certainly offer much more exposure going forward. Silva points out that the Plus requirement for online multiplayer on PS4 will increase membership and Plus' reach.

Wasn't this already known? Did people really think developers just handed their games over for free to Sony?

Of course it was assumed by many, but like the article mentions, I believe this is the first time it's been explicitly stated by Sony themselves.

The IGC potentially becoming a bigger deal is exciting.

I'm not familiar with this but since I'm getting a PS4 in November I might as well get to know about this cool stuff. Is the free stuff only playable for the duration of the free period, or is it where if you download it during the free period you can play it forever?

Duh?

Folks didn't honestly think that devs/publishers were like "Hey, Sony! We totally made enough money on this game, so please give it away for free!" did they?

aint no such thing as free

As consumer this is by far the best service I got this gen, Sony must do what they must do from a Business point of view. The important thing in here is to keep the consumer happy and I'm, as a EU PS+ consumer, very satisfied with the service and looking for more of it once the PS4 arrives.

Free as long as you keep your sub.

If you lapse, you can redownload anything you'd had before and play them again.

Yes? Pretty sure I remember the Retro City Rampage dev saying he didn't make any money when he put his game up on PS+. He just did it for the exposure.

Wait what? Velocity 2X is coming to PS Plus?!

On a side note, yea I think the exposure thing is going to be a big draw for many indie devs.

Well, duh.

I thought this was going to be about letting us buyout IGC games so we don't lose them if our subscription lapses. Since you can buy DLC for them losing access to paid content is annoying. Probably the biggest flaw the IGC has right now.

I'm not even sure I understand how that's news.
I mean, it's like with game magazines giving away full games.
How do you think they are allowed to do that, if not paying the developers/publishers?

I can't wait to see how PS+ is after the massive increase in members when the PS4 launches. Maybe we'll get more AAA games there a few months after release (games that aren't COD/AC/BF/Sports titles).

I think most people assumed as much.

Well there was that Humble Bundle...

While not trying to deride what they did for charity, that was done for good PR and Origin userbase expansion.

Sure, some indie devs might do such a thing, but do you really think Ubisoft or EA are just doing it for exposure? Doubt it.

If nothing else, I've seen so many people finally play things through PS+ and love it, feeling like they should have bought it day 1. A month on PS+ is probably good for word of mouth... marketing devs get paid for (while Sony gets sub money for) and don't have to instead spend money on, like traditional marketing would require. If someone gets a PS+ sub at the end of 2014 and missed out on a lot of stuff, there will likely be people to tell them that some games they missed are worth paying for.

I already thought it was well known that developers got paid a set amount for how many copies Sony/they estimated people to download, the price of the game normally, balanced with estimated profits on how much money would be made from extra exposure (DLC, sequels etc)

Of course the exact numbers are not shared publicly and it is done game by game.

It makes sense to put up a previous version of a game out for free when you have a sequel to it coming out. It can easily boost the sequel's sales.

I don't see why people see it as so cut and dry. Developer gains word of mouth + potential DLC sales. Not such a bad deal, even for free for an older game.

That said I hope Sony introduces free weekends like on Steam. It would give a new lease of life to titles like Fat Princess without giving it away on Plus.

Full game demos can be good business for developers.
As annoying as I found it to see one user liken them to rentals that IS a more accurate term than full game demos: would you be calling movies streamed via Netflix trailers because you didn't rent them in a traditional manner and you don't own them?

I assume each region buys its own offerings?
So the more subscribers, the more buying power they have.

Okay Asians, stop running to the US/EU plus so we can get awesome stuff too.

this was already known, but it's a good deal for certain devs.

think of it this way: if you aren't sure how well your game is going to sell because you may not have that much marketing and certain metrics are showing mild interest among the target audience, then why not get GUARANTEED MONEY for it by signing the PS+ deal with Sony?

you get paid, the game gets downloaded by potentially millions, and the next time you release a game maybe you'll have some recognition and a better shot at normal sales. plus you'll have a lot of users that played it and gave feedback for your next attempt.

when you think of it that way it makes sense why we see certain games on there.

Speaking about this, is there info on the first games for the service? I know about Drivelcub demo edition, but what about december and forward?

I'm fairly sure it's been stated that, initially, Driveclub: PS+ Edition and Resogun will be available on the IGC and that, moving forward, every month will have one PS4 downloadable title added to it.

Although already known I see this as a plus in that our sub fee actually goes towards something, rather than the competitions just paying for online, or rather a 2 way street than a 1way street so to speak. Sony just need to honour their word on upgrading PSN infrastructure ready for PS4 so all those jumping ship experience a similar standard online & adopt as we have.

I always assumed developers did it because Cerny and Shu would come to their house and serenade them with tales of the industry while they were in the tub.

That's probably why multiplayer is behind a pay wall next gen. They're gonna need bigger payoffs to convince devs to make their PS4 games free.

so basically where using our cash for Sony to buy games from devs in order to make it free....

so where all Moneyhatters? nOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
kidding we knew this before I believe
