Playstation VR GDC Presentation: March 15th

Oh man, or stepping on the box and ruining it.

Can't wait for wireless VR.
You're going to be waiting a while. I don't see how video/sound/sensor data/etc is going to be able to be transmitted over the air without significant latency issues any time soon.

Yes I am being serious, PS4 is a living room consumer device, most living rooms are shared. Why is this so hard to fathom? They specifically have the breakout box in order to make it a shared experience.
Isn't the box like the size of a slice of bread? Or am I mistaken?

Eurogamer says it's about half the the size of a Wii:

Gear VR?
Hololens although thats AR.
Google is developing a wireless VR headset as well there was thread here on gaf about it.

Looks like a Wii mini... so I guess thats accurate thanks!

Apparently 5G technology is targeting a sub-1ms latency so hopefully some local wireless technology will arrive soon to match the needs of VR.

Raw bandwidth however is probably an equally big challenge. Ecspecially when we need 240fps for saccadic-eye-movements and foveated rendering.

I don't see a PS4/PSVR official bundle happening any time soon, if for no other reason than I think Sony wants to avoid having anything that expensive on the shelves and the confused news stories that would go with it ('Playstation VR costs $700!!!' etc).

Yeah, I've been watching reports on the possible uses of 5G and almost all the big players have mentioned it as a potential solution for wireless VR.

It also makes me wonder if this is a possible reason for Sony's purchase of Altair Semiconductors, which makes 4G LTE chips. They may want to use their expertise in 4G LTE chips to make their own 5G chips for the next gen headset.

The PS VR box, does it use USB on the console? If so then it is going to look messy.

Also I hope they have a white box to match white PlayStation 4 owners like myself

With your problem of one blurry lens I do wonder whether you cleaned your phone and your lenses well enough before using it, don't forget your phone screen usually has finger smears on it, mostly on the bottom side of the screen. Also try to download a hq video and sideload it in MilkVR, the streaming quality is also crap.

Yeah I tried cleaning them but difficult not to get horrible smears which in VR are very noticeable, need.to get decent wipes. Dust is the enemy of VR as well, and I wndder how all the headsets will cope with this. In the PSVR, Rift and Vive are the screens and lens enclosure completely sealed on the screen side? I'd imagine it would prevent stray dust entering it, but if it did make it a nightmare to clean, to the point of requiring disassembly... Wonder how they do it.

Average doesn't help. Room scale (walking) is and will be a real thing for both Vive and Rift (don't know how Sony look at PSVR in that regard, did they say anything?).

Vive cord length is 5 meters
Rift cord length is 4 meters, but can be longer with optional extension

AFAIK

Hmmm.....I kinda wish PSVR has at least a 4 meter cord too.

Heh. Methinks people might be salty if they are seriously thinking it's gonna be 299 even 399 is on the low side of what I'd expect. Around 499 is much more likely.

Video/audio is transmitted via HDMI. I believe only controller/sensor data is sent via the USB cord.

My recommendation is to buy a microfiber cloth if you don't have one already. It really helps with cleaning glass and won't scratch the lenses.

I'm still all for this
299$ Headset only ordered online
399$ +camera + 2 move controllers +(maybe a game) like Adr1ft which is 19.99 according to gamestop
749$ + PS4

How about $399 with the headset+1 Move+a demo (not a real game)?

Is no one else thinking that they'll bundle head phones with it?
Good head phones are pretty damn important. The earbuds that come with the ps4 simply won't do.

Since you can use any headphones they assume you have a pair laying around. You don't want one earbud anyway, you want proper headphones for good 3d audio.

The staff experimented with built-in headphones, but came to realize that with as many different head shapes as there are in the world, it couldn’t design headphones that would properly cover everyone’s ears, so it decided to give players the ability to use their own.

would wireless headphones work? Like the Sony Golds that I have?

I don't think they would. "VR audio" is generated in the breakout box so unless it "goes back" to the PS4, you'll need wired headphones connected to the jack you can find on one side of the little white remote located along the cord connecting the box to the headset.

The Gold headsets come with an audio cable so you can plug in your headset.

Both Gear and Hololens are only wireless because both have the computational unit on the headset. Nothing is streamed. For the Rift/Vive/PSVR this would be like strapping a PC/PS4 to your head or back.

That's wireless VR. As technology advances it won't be as inconceivable to have a PS4 Level computer strapped to your face. Third and fourth generation VR is going to be mind blowing.

I have to imagine they'd support 3D audio through whatever headphones gamers are already using. I can't see them designing this thing then forcing you to only be able to use a certain type (wired or wireless) headphones with it.

No, that's mobile VR. A mobile unit will always be an order of magnitude less powerful than having a dedicated box plugged into a wall. It's not like only mobile tech advances. By the time you have something with the power of a PS4 small enough to strap to your face (and last more than a couple minutes under battery power), consoles/PCs will be that much more powerful. In something as demanding as VR, this will not result in a negligible difference.

Anyhow, wireless transmission of data to a headset isn't impossible. It's just not really practical right now. Neither are super high resolution screens or eye tracking, but they will be in the future. It'll certainly be feasible long before we get mobile tech powerful enough that the differences between it and a dedicated box make it not worth it.

I remember watching a video of someone using the gold headset with psvr, but I can't remember which one it was. But I remember it because I had the same question, and once I saw that video I felt better since I have the golds.

I'm going to GDC, but won't be able to attend this. Luckily they will be having this on the show floor.

Looking forward to your review.

I really hope they announce and then say it's available for pre-order straight away.

I will go with a $349 price. Same price as the PS4.

To me, it just seems a little bad if the peripheral is more than the hardware it runs on.

I don't see Sony announcing that it's available to pre order if the live event isn't streamed. I hope there is a stream, though...

Could they announce PSVR support for 1st party titles that are already out? I know they are testing with Driveclub, maybe they make that official and add Killzone Shadowfall and Resogun, I know its not that easy to adapt games to VR but I think those two could work really great with VR

Doubtful its anytime soon. With last years Tegra X1 we are just now crossing into PS3 level processing power and that thing is meant to be car powered. Developers have creative ways of marketing the new parts but in reality the raw FP32 performance of these mobile chips is not close to being on par with current consoles.
