PlayStation4 FW 1.5 details

For being only 300mb, it seems like the update is really just an unlock "key," so to speak. For their sake I hope nothing stupid happens because of it. Sucks that there's no resume/suspend at launch, but this is the price of being first.

I'm still hype.

No it's not. Codes don't take much space. The reason games are so big is because of assets such as textures. Considering there's not much graphics involved (maybe a couple UI textures), 300mb is a massive patch.

I don't know about the requirement regarding Music Unlimited but everything they have said about background music streaming has been only about Music Unlimited.

Music Unlimited is a wonderful service but not at 120 a year wonderful.

Here comes the supreme plus discount. I currently use it because of the Plus discount.

It took so long to update the Wii U.

Takes so long to update the Wii U.

I think they have goombas in there carrying data packets from the wifi to console. :(

*shrug* it is what it is.

people have been trumpeting "XB1 wasn't ready to launch this year"

real world: like any major launch - everything is coming down as late as possible for a number of reasons.

it sucks that we've got big day 1 updates but that's the reality.

Never try to understand console warriors. Just be amused by it. Anyone that ripped MS for announcing a day one patch, or Nintendo, and thought Sony wouldn't have a substantial one themselves is just absolutely clueless about how new hardware launches work.

New Wii U install animations inc?

I'LL WRITE AGAIN. SONY HAS SAID ONE DOES NOT HAVE TO USE MU TO LISTEN CUSTOM SOUNDTRACKS. IT IS STILL THE CASE UNLESS THEY LIED.

Give us a link, please.

I knew we could do this from the thread earlier in the week, but do you have any impressions?

There's a thread about it.

Most people love it.

There was one guy that said he liked it, but that the DS4 was the ugliest controller ever. lol

Sony is rushing this console like MS is rushing there's eh? Both day one patches. Guess they're both not ready. All those poor people without internet an unable to update their consoles. Why would they live there.

Not likely. Sony just has the one OS. Isn't MS up to nearly a half dozen? (kidding.)

Yeah, all day-one patches suck, but what's the alternative? Delay console launch until it's perfect? Or stick to the launch day, and continue working on the system until it's time to seal the update.

I'd rather have the PS4 in a couple weeks, and put up with a 15 minute delay when I turn it on, than have to wait until the holidays or early '14.

Uh, yes?

Sony has been touting the suspend/resume since they first unveiled the console. It's arguably THE biggest feature of these next-gen consoles. And then just three weeks from launch we learn that it'll be coming later on - I would certainly call that a "gotcha".

I'm not mad about having to download a patch, it's just lame they withheld this information instead of being more upfront about it.

How is it withholding information if they let it be known today?

I don't think its their biggest feature but I am disappointed that it's not there for launch.

I'm looking forward to the streaming personally.

Reality must hurt you. FW is clearly behind console developement. Even more so with XBO.

Apart from hundreds of people have used and experienced the Xbox GUI at this point, nobody knows what the PS4 interface looks or feels like beyond previsualisations and mock ups.

As somebody who uses this stuff I would like to know how my games console is going to handle the various features I expect of it.

Some of these features not being present already is a bit odd (no optical drive playback, really?), but it's only 300 mb. Shame about the suspend and resume feature too, as I really enjoy it on the 3DS and Vita.

This article from back in August goes in to the background music a little.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2013/08/20/music-unlimited-gets-amplified-on-ps4/

With Music Unlimited, you can do just that! MU is a cloud-based music service from Sony — you have access to millions of songs, music channels and the ability to build your own playlists. New for PS4, you’ll be able to listen to your music in the background while you play games.

Hopefully the "your music" part means your actual music off the HDD and not your music on MU.

How was Shu watching the Killzone livestream during the Gamescom stage demo?

An early build of the feature that still has bugs that prevented them from releasing it into the wild with the launch update. Come on people, this isn't rocket science. It's pretty standard stuff.

Wow it's almost every feature needed in the day one update. Is background music only for music unlimited?

This is an update to support Music Unlimited for use as background music. Pretty sure the normal music player is already in firmware before 1.5.

There is a good reason for the disc playback not being there without a connection:

The machines are likely universal, with a multi voltage PSU.

In order to adhere to DVD and BluRay Movie player rules, the machines have to be region locked. It will be at this point that the PS4 locks it's Drives for movie playback.

It's also likely that the patch that is downloaded is also locale specific and contains the correct data for voice recognition etc

Additionally, we added new features that many PlayStation gamers have requested. You will now be able to listen to music in the background while playing games and access Music Unlimited controls on the fly without completely exiting game play or other apps. Simply press and hold the “PS” button on the DUALSHOCK 4 to access a pop up menu that will enable you to quickly pause or skip tracks, and adjust the volume.

if true thank god.

I dunno if this means that you will be able to play your own music through the app or if music unlimited is just a pay app but they did say this. "Our new Walkman app actually lets you combine your personal MP3 collection and your Music Unlimited library and access it through the app."

It was posted as one of the comments from this link on psblog

Do I need to subscribe to Music Unlimited?

...hm nothing new. Sony will always suck at this.
What a joke, having to update your console on the day of a purchase lol.
MS will always crush them at this
Wow... these are features of the PS4 that have been touted for months... they must have not had much done by the time they went to manufacturing.
lmao..... so you guys have no idea what you're even talking about.
1.0 contains basic functionality so OS development doesn't hinder hardware manufacturing.
Yep

Just quickly skipping through Sony's Gamescom conference and they start talking about Music Unlimited here (It's around the 1:38:50 mark, but the video should auto skip there)

It's obviously not confirmation but from the way he describes it, it does seem that, at least for time being, MU is the only way to listen to music in the background. It seems that the only way you can control your music in the background is to press the PS button and then access the MU navigation bar.

Not to mention, after day one with PS4, all of your updates will be downloaded in the background while the system is on or in sleep mode (once that is put in place). You won't have to worry about patches again after day one.

I'm going all digital this gen and day 1 is going to suck for me. I have 3 games pre-ordered through psn totaling an estimated 100 gigs of data, plus whatever patches the system and those games need. After that though, it should all be smooth sailing because of the background downloads.

I wonder how PS4 will stand up against stand alone Blu Ray players. Heck, how does PS3 hold up these days?

Some features will not be available at launch, such as “suspend/resume mode” which is a feature that keeps the PS4 system in a low power state and promptly takes users back to their game.

That's pretty strange. Thought for sure this would be there day one. Wonder if MS will also be doing the same and implementing the feature at a later date?

Anyway, this adds yet more weight to my decision to not buy either console at launch. Hopefully all this will be ironed out by 2015 and I'll have successfully dodged the beta release stage.

We know how it will look like already. We saw it at the beginning os the Gamescon presentation. We haven't seen enought though. Agreed.

As for how it "feels" like, you could say that about both consoles. Very few people outside of the US have experienced a DS4 or a Xbone controller/OSs

Also, you haven't awnsered my last question about bias. Pls do. I didn't get it.

Wow, people still waiting for the Sony bomb to drop and waiting on anything to pounce at... it's embarassing GAF... Let's get answers, then break out the pitch forks if it's not what they told us, looing at the past few pages is like reading a fanboy console warrior blog. It's Friday, be happy!

So the statement made about party chat working with the mono headset I guess confirms the rumor about bluetooth and USB type headset not being supported right out of the gate.

What I understood from that answer is that the walkman app is different than the music unlimited app, but I dunno if I am reading it right.

Thanks. Still vague though. Hopefully Yoshida can clear it up.

This will be my first Sony console, I have no idea how MU or anything like that works in Sony's ecosystem.

This update is for the AmaSons!! because they will start getting the PS4 at least a week earlier and SONY says " No, no no!"

Online Multiplayer
PlayStation Plus members will be able to play PS4 titles online with other players via the network. PS Plus makes it easy for members to join available online multiplayer matches in a variety of ways, including the ability to easily join a game from a live stream broadcast or Party voice chats.
------

BTW I see some ppl focus only on 1 item of this GREAT! list (no standby mode) so what! don't shut down the PS4 and keep playing!
