PlayStation4 FW 1.5 details

Not true.

Low powered mode is present, it is mentioned in the article. Background chip will still monitor PSN servers, download games/patches while console is "turned off".

Right at the bottom it says, low powered state is a feature of suspend/resume which will not be present at launch.

WTF online needed to play DVD and Blurays?

So PS4 reads DVDs?...wtf what about CDs?

Has anyone noticed that on PS3, the blu rays have all the latest trailers regardless how long you have had the movie you are playing?

Could this be why?

Im curious on this aswell, never had to do that with anyother DVD/BluRay player before.

I really hope Sony improved updating on the ps4, because it's a load of horseshit on the ps3.

Well one system was Cell processor and split RAM with barely any devoted to OS. This one is more like a PC processor and also over 1GB RAM devoted to the OS. I would be utterly shocked and disgusted if the PS4's OS wasn't leagues above PS3 in every single aspect.

The only thing about this that is really bothersome is not having suspend/resume ready. That just seems like a core functionality. But a short delay is no problem if that's all it ends up being.

Right at the bottom it says, low powered state is a feature of suspend/resume which will not be present at launch.

I hope that at launch it AT LEAST functions like the PS3, turning on at a specific time to download an update.

People going wild over a day 1 patch? Calm down. At least it's not a 1GB patch that could brick your console.
knock on wood

I'm most disappointed in not having the suspend feature at launch. That's the big feature I was looking forward to.

People crying about not being able to play blurays/DVDs? You still need some type of software for the actual playback. And you're still getting that functionality on day 1. Plus most are watching their movies through the internet anyway. Relax.

I'm really surprised how many features require the firmware update. I was expecting an update day 1 but didn't expect so many key things to be related to it. At least the file size is low.

Right at the bottom it says, low powered state is a feature of suspend/resume which will not be present at launch.

Why not quote entire sentence:
"Some features will not be available at launch, such as “suspend/resume mode” which is a feature that keeps the PS4 system in a low power state and promptly takes users back to their game. "

^That sentence is clearly talking just about game suspend and nothing else. In the rest of the article, Sony clearly says:

"Play as you download
This feature enables users to play supported digital titles as they are being downloaded. The time it takes to begin playing will vary depending on game data size and network environments, and not all titles will support this feature When a game is purchased, users can start playing after PS4 downloads a portion of the data, while the rest of the game is downloaded in the background during actual gameplay. Games may be downloaded in stand-by mode.
"

So there. Background Chip is active on launch, working as advertised. The only thing is missing is the abbility of APU and RAM to retain data while system is off, but that will come in future update.

This was pretty obvious, pre-launch units don't need blu-ray features etc as the people who would have them wouldn't be using them

Gah. There's so much wrong with this, I don't even know where to start.

First of all, how do you not have these core, basic features as part of the initial operating system? DVD/Blur ray playback not already in? The share functionality that they've been saying for months is offered as a system level feature? And no suspend/resume?

This is just as I feared. This sounds like the 'over-promise, under deliver Sony' we've known for years and that's never a good sign. God damn it, this could be bad. Real bad.

Normally I'd be with you on this, but I think it's time we all just took a deep breath and waited to see. The same goes with X1 and games like COD. Let's just wait it out, we'll all know soon enough if it's time to declare the apocalypse.

It seems reasonable to me that Sony and MS, in an effort to get their hardware ready to ship a million + units worldwide, would have disabled firmware features that were still being finalized. Hardware numbers like that take time. It would be much worse if blu-ray was supposed to work but didn't, or only worked for some discs. I'm glad that almost all of the promised features are going to be up and running. Besides, every single electronic that I've had in the past two years that had a firmware needed an update at the time of purchase. My phones, tablets, Vita, etc. It's not a big deal.

My only two concerns now are that the update servers can push at a speed faster than the 56K modems they had for PS3 updates, and what does this mean for downloading games from the app that are supposed to wake the PS4 before we get back to it.

Number of problems I have with this: Zero

I'm firing up games at launch and not giving two squats about anything else until I come out of my tomb three days later. Day 1 patch makes me feel good, actually. I sit here knowing that Sony is working on the OS until the very last minute and I'd have it no other way. It's a console launch, I can only begin to imagine the complexity of the work that goes into all facets.

And the suspend feature, though while OMG-amazing, isn't a deal breaker. I at least know it's coming down the road and not completely axed.

For the record, I fully understand that there has to be an update on launch day.

I don't fully understand that this update consists only of features that were all presented from very early on and in fact not even all features seem to be in there that I expected to have available from the start. I also don't understand some of the online-checks stuff for BD/DVD movie playback.

With the likely server breakdown on launch day, I guess at least you get to laugh at what you CAN actually do with a pre-patched PS4.

- suspend mode
- uploading to youtube
- playing my own mp3s with the background music player
- save videos and screenshots directly to the HDD
- file transfer from&to external HDDs

if this rudimentary stuff (of which most was already possible on PS3 in some form) is not there within the first WEEKS, I will be really disappointed.

Some features will not be available at launch, such as “suspend/resume mode” which is a feature that keeps the PS4 system in a low power state and promptly takes users back to their game.

The highlighted is important
I think this is the important part of the little footnote... Suspend/Resume is not the same as multi-tasking (i.e switching from game to app to OS to game). This suspend/resume mode is the feature where you put your console to sleep and where it goes into low-power mode, waiting for you to resume your session at a later time.

The low-power state is the keyword, while you're console is up and running it isn't in low-powered state.

Play as you download

Is that new info? It's a shame that this is not a mandatory thing. I really thought it would be, or at least that's how it was presented initially.

Also, lack of YouTube upload for videos is a bit annoying. I know YouTube isn't exactly the best, but Facebook really is a steaming turd if it's being presented as the only upload option for video.

Yeah that's what I was trying to get at. Makes sense too me.

Another thing people need to realize is...

This is Firmware 1.5...

Until you know the features of Firmware 1.0 you can't say that features are being left out, unless specified.

You were really excited about next gen games so you could put them all into suspend mode?

yes? It saves me a ton of time and should increase my motivation to actually play a game more often as I can do it for short bursts.

I think you're going to have to wait until The Evil Within releases for that. :P

damn it, but a suspense mode would be cool as well. PS4 LED turns red and spooky sounds come from the DS4's speaker :D

Just for clarity: some people are confusing the suspend mode for games with the console's sleep (low-powered) mode.

Suspended mode allows the entire memory state to be preserved in low-powered mode, thus allowing you to resume a game as soon as you turn the console back on. This is the feature which isn't ready yet.

The PS blog is so unpredictable. Sometimes they are super-responsive, others they just publish and knock off for the day. Today should have been a super-responsive day. Why would they post something like this, and not have someone hanging around the blog to answer questions and comments?

Wow amazing thread just read most of it. Don't care for music while playing games, I like to enjoy the games music itself. I never used the feature on my 360 or PS3 but whenever I did want to listen to music while playing games, I just used my stereo. I don't like wasting HDD space on my console for MP3s. But hey that's just me

It's 300MB. I know, not exactly huge by any stretch of the imagination, but are you confident that you'll be able to quickly download the update on launch day? Are you confident that it'll go smoothly without a hitch? Previous experience suggests not, but we'll see I guess.
I'm more confident that 300MB patch will download quicker than the Xbones 1.5 GB day one patch. That's not to say there won't be any server issues; I'm just saying I'm more confident in the 300MB dl. I expect servers to be congested for both consoles at launch.

nice. love dem fw updates. Ps3 was majorly enhamced over the years with these. So i expect the four will be too. Btw also makes we wonder what exciting "features" may lie in store for us. Clock fix anyone ?Did they remeber leap years thiis time ! Etc
haha good times. leap year clock bug was hilarious

I really wanted the suspend feature. I hope that comes soon.
Me too.

Yeah I think this is what we need to be mindful of. It's understandable to have a day one patch anyway since they have an extra month or so where they can work on features instead of sitting on there hands and waiting 3 months or something stupid.

Although it does suck to have to download it right when you turn it on. I guess you don't need it to play anything though.

I think you'll be able to play games and use the system without patching it first (unlike Xbox One, we've seen the manual that requires you to connect to the internet to download the patch to get it set up). It's not like the system comes with no firmware.

Source? Also, why wouldn't they include that feature in these footnotes?

Because it's Firmware 1.5, not Firmware 1.0.

I don't know where people are getting the no upload to Youtube from. Sony has already confirmed in the past that Youtube will be supported.
The article only mentions FB and Twitter for uploads (Ustream/Twitch for streaming) so I guess that's why.

It's a shame suspend is missing (it's wonderful on the Vita, although it's also instantly more useful on a handheld), but I'll live with it. Suspend mode on a device without a battery seems odd anyway... what if there's a power cut? D:

Realistically, as long as I can play Killzone and download Resogun day one I'll be happy.

Although it does suck to have to download it right when you turn it on. I guess you don't need it to play anything though.

Ideally they should offer the firmware download on their website like they do for PS3. Like one day before launch so that you can already prepare a USB stick even before you get the console.

I'm okay with a day one patch. I feel like it's expected these days. What does make me sad is suspend/resume coming later but I've waited this long, I can wait a little longer I guess.

I expect it to be going forward but a lot of games are current gen ports that were done in a hurry .

Someone do a test: Use Music Unlimited on the PS3. Can you access music that you have ripped to your hard drive and didn't buy through Music Unlimited?

I hope PSN holds up to the barrage that it will get as midnight launches roll across the world.

I doubt it.

Hopefully single player games will still function without issue if/when PSN croaks.

They've always had the ps3 firmware updates on their site as far as I know.

Yeah that would be great. They might even do it to decrease congestion.

The app doesn't work like that at all. Plus there are limitations on the ps3 functionality of music unlimited that will not be present on the ps4.

yes? It saves me a ton of time and should increase my motivation to actually play a game more often as I can do it for short bursts.

This is one of the best things the Vita has going for it. That I can turn off the screen in the middle of a game, then pick it back up even a day later and start playing again within 5 seconds is a killer feature. So many times I suspend a game when getting off the train, and then start right back up when I'm on again. It makes me want to play more often.

It will be nice when they add it in to the PS4, but it's not something that I'm going to miss too much if it isn't there for a month or two.

No blu ray playback without patch is a fuck up. Online and multiplayer features whatever, but not having base functionality like blu ray playback is terrible.

"We do know, however, that "at first time use, users must connect to the internet" before Blu-ray and DVD playback will function"

The play as you download feature takes some extra work on the packaging side so it'd probably annoy indie developers, especially since smaller games don't really need it.

You can't just ignore the AND.

It basically sounds like low-power mode is in but the only function associated to it that will not work at launch is suspend/resume. I'm guessing WoL, update checks etc should work.

We've already seen soom vids, fluid, quick and responsive... Looking good.
