Please Explain why Diet Coke is more popular than regular

Coke Zero is my preference, but I'll still take Diet Coke over regular. It's less to do with taste though, since all 3 taste like 99% identical. I just think the amount of sugar in regular Coke is obscene and disgusting.

Somebody tried to tell me that they all tasted the same. I called BS, that I could easily tell the difference. He had me do a blind taste test. I was right, I could easily tell which was which by taste.

people drink diet because they think it's "healthier" but it is just as bad.

LOL not even close. It's not healthy, but it's miles better than regular coke, the chemical they replace sugar has been deemed harmless for decades and is one of the world's most studied chemicals. People are just in denial for some odd reason

I found this a couple months back. It's the only soda I drink now, once or twice a week

As someone who only drinks diet soft drinks and generally prefers them to their non diet counterparts, I find diet Coke to be uniquely disgusting and inedible. Always been curious to me why it's popular since I'm a diet drinker and can't stomach it.

Agreed. I used to be able to tolerate it, but I switched to Coke Zero when that came out as I think it tastes way better (I also like Splenda in general). Now I can barely stand it. I still like it better than regular coke though.

Diet Dr Pepper is heavenly though. Especially when it comes from a soda fountain.

All three are distinctly different formulas. They share similarities but have completely different flavor profiles.

Funny, regular coke tastes too acidic for me, I just stick to regular Pepsi.
Ugh, back in my soda drinking days I remember Coke tasting like corrosive battery acid. Perhaps the flavor was different in the decades prior to the millennium. But it's so unpalatable nowadays. Brewing your own sodas with water kefir and/or sparkling water is a lot funner. The end result being a much more flavorful and fresh drink. Got some lovely hibiscus recipes along with a grape soda one.

I prefer the taste of diet coke.

I think it's because we didn't have soda in my house and it's what my grandparents drank so it was the only soda I got as a kid.

I like ice water or unsweetened tea w/lemon so much more than diet anything

I like coke (Pepsi too) but it's a pretty rare treat

I don't drink that stuff anymore but I used to prefer Diet because it was fizzier and less sweet. It was more refreshing than regular.

But I imagine most people buy Diet Coke because they think it's healthier.

Well first off I think it tastes better, now whenever I drink regular soda it feels way too sweet and syrupy. Second I track my macros and avoid having too much sugar a day. A regular can is 40 grams or something i'd rather use those carbs on food before filling my daily macros on soda.

Caffeine free diet coke is where its at for me. Its my go to, cant handle the syrupy taste of regular coke.

Caffeine free because I have a heart condition.

It is?

I drank COPIOUS amounts of regular Coke when I was younger. Dropped all that a few years back. Can't stand diet coke. It's awful to me. I do know people who have made the switch and love it and then can't move back. I get all that.

The ONE thing I occasionally "cheat" with is a Cherry Coke Zero. The cherry flavor kind of overloads the zero part so I can handle it with a lot of ice. Otherwise, nah. No soda. Eliminating that is great for you, too.

I grew up on Diet Coke. Regular Coke feels too syrupy and it coats my mouth.

That said, I mostly just like the first few sips from a cold can. I could take or leave the rest of the drink as long as it satisfies me on those first few sips.

I'm sorry no.

Diet soda has fake sugar, which has been shown to not satisfy the craving of actual sugar. Since the brain wants real sugar, you wind up drinking/eating more to satisfy the craving. Some wind up drinking more diet soda than they would regular, because they think because it's diet they can 'indulge'

No, and nope.

Please link to studies that are NOT epidemiology proving your case.

Definitely gonna need to see these receipts.

Unless this is a vaccines cause autism argument.

Anecdotal, but literally everyone I've known who drank diet soda on the regular experienced severe thyroid issues. (Cancer and the like), even though sugar can't be much better for you, at the very least it's not an artificial chemical, and besides all that, if you're gonna kill yourself with a drink, at least it should taste good.

Coke tastes "heavier". And there's no calories. That no calories allows you to eat more!

Actually, that's false.

No calories means your leptin levels become too low which causes you to overeat to compensate for the lack of calories, and diet any pop are probably using artificial sweeteners (unless it's stevia) which further damages metabolism.

Would love to drink Coke instead, but I can't live with myself drinking calories in sugar. How many g of sugar in a can of coke? Like 35ish? That's way too much.

Having a diet coke is a nice substitute—even if, somewhere down the line, we conclusively verify aspartame is the worst food additive ever. I don't consider it a healthy option, but it's the lesser of two evils if I'm going to indulge. A regular coke is like for the premium and rarest indulging occasions.

I came for the 0 calories and stayed for the taste after getting used to it. I still prefer regular coke but limit that to once every other week due to the sugar and calories.

Now that Coke Zero Sugar is available, there is no reason for the continued existence of the taste-bud-insult known as Diet Coke.

Not the one who said it but: Diet soda has fake sugar, which has been shown to not satisfy the craving of actual sugar. Since the brain wants real sugar, you wind up drinking/eating more to satisfy the craving. Some wind up drinking more diet soda than they would regular, because they think because it's diet they can 'indulge'

Regardless of the craving factor, drinking more diet soda isn't harmful. If you drink two cans of diet coke, you're still ingesting zero grams of sugar. As opposed to 39g in a can of regular coke.

I was a regular coke kinda guy. Then I switched to herio.. diet coke.

I like diet coke now. Hated it my whole life. How is it less healthy for you again? Since Ive made the switch I feel much better and have lost a lot of fat.

I don't know how people deal with that wretched aftertaste. I'd rather drink less regular soda than switch to diet.

I'm a type 1 diabetic, diagnosed in 1993. Consequently I haven't had "proper" Coke in over twenty years.

I don't notice an aftertaste, sugar-free is simply how Coke tastes to me. I guess you don't miss what you haven't had/haven't had for over two decades.

I don't really like diet coke or coke zero. Or diet pepsi. Pepsi Max though I can drink for days.

Best low calorie fizzy drink is Irn Bru Xtra though. It tastes so close to the full sugar version it's nuts.

It's not, people just like to spread bullshit for some reason. They're like the anti-vaxxers of soda.

When I eat or drink things with too much sugar in them I get a weird ass tasting saliva in my mouth that lasts for a few hours.

My saliva gets all super smooth texture wise too it's weird.
