Please gaf, help me pick between PS4 and Xbox One

PS4. You shouldn't make your decision based on launch window games unless you absolutely MUST play those launch exclusives. Get the one that's cheaper, has better multiplats, is smaller, has a better valued online service, and most importantly will have a muuuch better lineup of exclusives.
You also forgot the better hardware belongs to the ps4 as well. It really is a no brainer this gen if you only can choose one.

one thing i will say is that I think the indie games lineup will be stronger on PS4, along with exclusives, F2Ps, and MMOs.

also, you can't go wrong with PS+. Cheaper than live, and has greater value.

i own a ps4 and i've borrowed a xbone. I'd rather have an xbone at this point in time. Take that for what you will.

You're right OP, its all about the games, Dead Rising 3, KI, and Ryse are all great games.

I have both and really should have waited before getting PS4 as the game that I bought it for (KZ) is mediocre at best and as such has been collecting dust. XB1 is the better choice right now simply due to its unique library at this point. They will both have great games later on for sure tho so I dont think you can really go wrong in the long run.

You can run your previous Gen console through the Xbox one with almost no lag, so that's something to consider.

I have satellite and my 360 in an hdmi switch that runs through my One. Before I had the switcher the 360 kinda got ignored.

I'd say if you HAVE to get one now, go with Xbox, since it has games you want to play. At the very least this approach will allow you to stagger your purchases with the PS4.

Good luck!

I'd say pick the one that has the games you want now otherwise save your money and wait for the games you want to come out. Otherwise EVERYONE on gaf should have gotten a wii-u and a vita day one based on future promises.

makes zero sense. Not even comparable. What wii u third party super support were you expecting? Both these consoles are expected to have (with good reason) strong third party support and both companies have a track record of first party pick what you want.

Unless all you care about are console exclusives and play 3rd party on pcs this argument doesnt make much sense.

You can run your previous Gen console through the Xbox one with almost no lag, so that's something to consider.

Wut? The lag is pretty huge. I have my AppleTV hooked up to my Xbox One, and there is a delay of roughly a second every time I press a key on the AppleTV's remote. Playing games over it is impossible.

Xbox One Pros: There are actually games I want to play on it right now, and coming out soon. Killer Instinct was real fun, Forza 5 looked real nice, I wanna play Dead Rising 3. Upcoming releases like Titanfall, and Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare I'd enjoy trying. Third party support just as good as PS4.

Those are the main reasons I went with a XB1 over a PS4 right now. I'm having alot of fun with DR3, more than I thought I would. Picked up the DLC this week for it. I'm looking forward to XB1's exclusives more as well, Titanfall, Quantum Break, Halo to name a few. Microsoft had alot more co-op games in their exclusives on the 360 and I'm hoping that continues this gen. Plant's vs. Zombies even has local co-op for those who want it. (My buddy is one, so he can play with the Mrs.)

I also prefer Microsoft's controllers over Sony's and so far the XB1 controller has been great. The Kinect I find I use more than I thought for voice commands, works pretty well for me so far turning it On, Off, Volume up, swap, etc. Worst case scenario you hate the Kinect, you could always sell it since Microsoft has said its not required anymore. Disclaimer I haven't tried it, but now I might just to see what happens.

I don't think you can go wrong either way, but so far I have no regrets about getting my Day One XB1. Whatever choice you make you can always sell it down the road if you end up regretting it.

As a current PS4 owner, do not buy EITHER console until AFTER the games you want come out. My PS4 currently streams Netflix pretty well and that's about it. I don't think there's a single game I want to play coming out for it in the next 6 months. For XB1 it's pretty much the same story (I'll get Titanfall on PC if at all).

I see myself playing a lot more PC games this gen than last gen. One of the big reasons for getting a PS4 was assumption some Japanese franchises would never make the jump, like Yakuza. I might get and XB1, but I doubt anything major will hit it that won't make it to PC.

Neither console is worth buying right now, unless you think one or two games will keep you busy for six months and you don't mind effectively paying $200 for each of them.

Just cool your jets and wait it out, see how the land lies towards the end of this year, and enjoy all the dirt-cheap games you haven't yet played on your current console.

Right now, with the situation you described currently, I'd recommend you buy the Xbox One now, and the PS4 at a later date (preferably when Destiny comes out, since you want to play Destiny with friends it seems).

You don't seem to be interested in what the PS4 currently offers, while on the other hands you want to play the games available on the Xbox One, so just buy the Xbox One now, and wait 9 months for Destiny, and buy the PS4. Spread your purchases basically across an entire year, so your wallet doesn't hurt as bad.

Or, just don't buy either and still wait for Destiny to buy a PS4.

Or, stick to your vows and buy the PS4 and don't support Microsoft. Really it's your choice.

Holy crap, is the thread accurate? I knew Ps4 had more games but damn that's a lot. I just don't get it then, where's this amazing X1 lineup people keep harping about? I really want to know. Also, I know Sunset Overdrive was confirmed for 2014, has Quantum Break been talked about at all? Is it leaning towards 2014 at least

PS4 has a lot more games coming up, while Xbox One's exclusive lineup is almost entirely vapourware. There seems like there is nothing in the immediate future.

I honestly had no idea how much stronger PS4's 2014's lineup really is...its almost triple of what is coming out for X1 this year??? That baffles me....I usually do not get into these brand wars but one thing that sorta makes me scratch my head is the amount of X1 owners touting how many exclusives X1 has over PS4...but from the looks of it...PS4 has the much stronger lineup for this year, unless X1 was merely using the "launch" games as there bragging rights. Who knows...but regardless both systems have some great games coming this year..its just that PS4 is really going to shine soon. Makes me wonder why so many PS4 gamers did not use this thread as bragging rights when X1 peeps have been doing exactly this but with yet the 2014 lineups tell a different story in favor of PS4...go figure.

OP, I bought both consoles, and up till now I am having more fun with the bone.
with upcoming titanfall, and forza horizon 2 and even halo 5 dropping in this year, looks like the xbone will make its value worth in games for me in the first year alone..
ps4 is great too, so no matter what you pick, its not like you will bang your head on tne wall ;)

If you really want a new console right now, just grab a xbox one. It has the games you want. But if you can wait it out then just get a 360 like you said you wanted to and join me in getting rid of our backlogs. =) There's so many games I want to play in this last gen that I could hold off getting a new console for a long time. Still getting a ps4 for destiny though.

Go where the games are. Xbox One, especially with Titan Fall around the corner, the hype for that will eat you up anyway so you might as well enjoy the other games while you can. You'll love Dead Rising.

OP if you decide to buy right you have to think about one thing really hard.

Can you afford to buy the other console down the line? Like 8-9 months down the line?

If you can buy both by the end of the year then buy the one you prefer which seems to be the Xbone right now.

HOWEVER!!!, beware you don't have buyers remorse. There are the E3 announcements coming within 5 months time. It would really suck to get stuck with a Wii U situation where all the games you want (aka Japanese games) aren't coming for the Xbone for a long time/can't get certain games and the PS4 is getting loads of good exclusives announced which isn't limited to just old franchises but new IP from all regions of the world.

Think deep about it and decide, we can only advise you so much. Put down $400 or $500, you are the one that is going to play the system.

The PS4 is more of a long term investment for your situation due to you not preferring the launch titles. The Xbox One is the short term investment for being able to play the launch games and who knows what else down the line until more is announced.

I personally prefer the PS4 but I wouldn't begrudge you of buying a Xbone if it fits your needs. GL HF

i know you mentioned price being a 'thing' for now, so get the one with the games you KNOW you'll be playing most.

i wouldn't even recommend getting one based on your friends' choices, either.
my friends don't know shit about games and only play titles that are popular. my tastes are completely different.

eventually though, it can only benefit you as a gamer to own both. they'll each have great games to play.

Go where the games are.

so both consoles, then?

Wait for E3, see what games they show and think again. If you're dying to get a new console right now then just think which of the exclusives you enjoyed more this generation because the same franchises will continue with some new additions and some that will be left behind.

Basically:

Want some fun? Buy an XBOX ONE!

-OR-

Buy a PS4? You might just like it more!!

OR...

Buy a WII U ... I have nothing good to say, sorry.

Just buy the one you want. Everybody here is just telling you, why they bought the stuff they like.

...

Xbox One because of LocoCycle obviously.

PS4

Cheaper, better, 60fps 1080p, and even though right now the games are quite slim....the 2014 lineup is way better then the Xbones.

PS4 (with a decent PC that can play Titanfall) would be the better option in the long term imo. The Sony box has the stronger 1st party support and will get the best versions of multiplats.

If I had to give a short answer it would be something in the lines of:

In the short run, an Xbox One. In the long run, a Playstation 4.

By comparison with previous gen, at launch, and during it's initial years, the Xbox 360 had a lot more games that I was interested in playing that the Playstation 3. Over time that number slowly decreased until the Playstation 3 had a lot of titles I wanted to play and the 360, not really, as such I haven't bought a 360 game for what I think is now at least a couple of years.

Meanwhile... there are plenty of last-gen games that you can get at dirt-cheap prices now, just saying... :)

Don't buy anything until at least Fall 2014.

MS's system is underpowered compared to the PS4, but that will mean jack all if they come out with a killer game lineup. Financially, the company as a whole is doing fairly well, and I can see MS dumping a ton of money into attracting devs to develop for their system assuming their board of directors doesn't torpedo Xbox altogether.

Sony's system is very strong performance wise, very well designed, and has an ok lineup of games coming out. They may attract more indie devs, and may attract more standard devs based on being easier to develop for and having more raw power than the Xbone, BUT not if the financial incentive isn't there. Sony as a whole financially hasn't been doing so well besides PlayStation, and they do not have the cash reserves to blow on risky projects.

Right now, we have little to no idea what 'killer apps' each company is planning on releasing other than a new Halo, maybe Titanfall, a new Uncharted, and maybe Infamous. Everything else is behind the curtains at this point.

Just wait it out.

I only own a PS4 and I am going to be honest and say PS4. Cheaper system, more powerful, better first party devs, and of course not produced by Microsoft. As for available games, I think it is a wash. If all you cared about was games that averaged a metacritic over 90 i think you would have no games to choose from. All my opinion of course.

On the other hand if you genuinely enjoy kinect and watch a ton of TV, plus enjoy gaming, Xbone would be the obvious choice.

For games that are out right now? Xbox One

But launch window always sucks, the PS4 is the better long term investment. The real answer is you should probably wait until there are actually a bunch of titles out for both systems before deciding.

Xbone now; PS4 later. I basically went through the same thought process as you. I went with Xbone at launch because it has more games I want to play now and for the foreseeable future.

x1 has Killer Instinct which is really great... but in the long run...

Ps4 will have way better ports and obviously very good exclusives.

Just wait, wait 1 more year. Your choice will be much better in a year, and it will be cheaper + the platforms will have matured a bit OS wise.

Wait 1 year and you'll be happy to have waited.

I have to say, it would suck to have to decide on only one console to get.

If you were to get both eventually anyway, I would easily suggest getting the Xbox One now.

It has some pretty good exclusives (I thought Ryse was going to be hot garbage based off of a previews, but I'm loving it). Not to mention that Titanfall is coming in less than 6 weeks!

PS4 will be good to get later this Fall. They have very few exclusives to play right now and not many exclusives coming out in the next 6 months, not counting indies. I'm assuming Sony will announce some titles for this Fall at E3.

I would also suggest getting the console that your good friends will be playing on, but it sounds like you have only one friend who games, so I probably wouldn't get a console just to play with him, unless he's a close friend haha.

I'd say wait it out a bit. From someone who owns both all I really do is play Forza 5 and watch tv and stuff on my Xbone and use my PS4 to talk with my girlfriend and maybe play some Battlefield 4 with her. I don't regret it buying both though, I've been pretty impressed with both consoles. It really depends on what you want to do. PS4 is more gaming centered while Xbone does games and also serves as a nice platform for your TV and movies. I thought the TV functions would be pointless but it's actually kinda slick. Really though do a little research and see which one caters to your tastes. See what games are coming out. Heck wait till E3. I'm sure the futures of both consoles will be shown well and might give you a clearer outlook on which console suits your best. Good luck and I hope your satisfied with the decision your make.

I think the best option would actually be to wait until there is a decent library for any of the systems and decide then. None of the launch games seem to be must haves or even all that great. If you have access to the last gen of games then changes are you still have some games in the backlog, many actually better than what is out for these next gen systems.
Just one personal advice. Never buy a console, especially if it's the only one you'll get, just for the released games, double that for launch games. It's a hefty investment and looking at what's ahead is important. For that reason I would recomend the PS4. because it has a combination of better hardware and better past production of exclusives.

There is a huge XBL gold pro, that people overlook.

It enabled multimedia functionality.
E.g. it allows you to use youtube or record gameplay.

Sony's PSN+ pales in comparison, as mentioned functionality is available even without it.

You also forgot the better hardware belongs to the ps4 as well. It really is a no brainer this gen if you only can choose one.

Implied that with the better multiplatform games but yes, absolutely. I know I don't speak for everyone but it would take some reeeeaaaaally good exclusives to make me buy something that's a lot less powerful yet costs $100 more.

wow such functionality wow

I'm trying to talk myself out of going crazy, and spending way too much money by buying both systems. I'm struggling with really deciding which one I should buy, because both of them have pros and cons to me. I've played both systems at my brother's place, so I know how the controllers feel for both, and how some of the games look. However, when it comes to picking a system for myself, I'm really really torn. Just to kinda give you guys an idea of where I'm coming from, and how I feel on each system, lemme just list out some pros and cons for each that I have.

PS4 Pros: Lower price. Friend will by buying Destiny on it when it's released. PS Plus service which I'm already invested in on PS3. I'd would gladly try the free games out so far for PS4 thanks to PS Plus. Better potential upcoming indie game I can get behind. Third party support is fine.

PS4 Cons: Other than Resogun there really are no exclusives right now I want to play on it. No releases announced on that I'd want to play are coming out anytime soon, and I don't how I feel about Infamous, because I still can't forget how I hated the first one on PS3.

Xbox One Cons: Higher Price. Have to renew Xbox Live Gold subscription, because I haven't owned an xbox 360 in almost a year. I don't plan to use, or want Kinect at all, so the higher price isn't really "more value" for me. I don't even have television, or cable hooked up to my tv to take advantage of that stuff. Titanfall and PvZ GW I COULD play both on my PC if I really wanted to, but I'm one of those gamers who does just prefer playing games with a gamepad. Even if I tried playing those games on my PC, I wouldn't feel evenly matched.

One last con for Xbox One I feel I got to mention, is I also have an internal predicament that if I get an Xbox One, I really hate how I'm going to feel like a hypocrite. I vowed I wasn't going to get their new system after E3 last year, and with the BS microsoft has pulled with their company, including the Xbox 360, is why I dropped them to begin with. I was tired of the ads on XB360, I was tired of paying for XBL when I saw no value in it for me over the PS3. It just sucks, because I hate being a hypocrite like I said, but as I mentioned in my XBONE pros section up there, I can't deny that there are games I wanna play on it.

This is just the an idea of the internal struggle I have while I've been trying to decide which system I'd rather pick up in the next month. Could you guys help me, and maybe point out what you think you'd do if you were in my situation?

Buy PS4, spend the extra money on games. Once there is a price-drop for the One, get that too.

I don't plan to use, or want Kinect at all, so the higher price isn't really "more value" for me.
Couldn't image using it a lot before buying the console too - Kinect on 360 war more or less useless. But it turns out it works really great and I started using the voice commands every time i play on xbx one.

if you an efford both consoles down the line: buy xbox one now and ps4 later, when are exiting exclusives coming out on ps4. otherwise you should maybe wait til e³ to make your decision which lineup you prefer.

like lastgen, at a certain point every gamer should buy both consoles to get all the good games

I really do not understand at all the idea of buying a console at launch because the two or three worthwhile games right then interest you more than the games on the competitor's console. You're basically jizzing $600 up the wall to play Dead Rising 3 and Forza 5 (or Killzone and Knack (lol)). That strikes me as mind-blowingly short sighted.

It has to be a longer term proposition with regards to games being released, and in that situation I can't see why you'd pick the Xbone based on the games coming out (unless you really really like Halo, Forza and Fable and pretty much nothing else).

Unless you are desperate to buy now you should simply wait until end of Febuary / early March when you'll have much better view on overall libraries and titles visible in the future.

Glanced a little at the OP.

Friends getting Destiny on PS4? Yeah just go with that, there's a huge pile of reasons I'd point at, but the two that are the most distinct that can tip the scales one way or the other is where friends are playing and what games you want, and launch titles can just be played later when the system's cheaper and the games are likely going for $10 in GameStop bargain bins anyway. Like you said the other exclusives you're interested in will be on PC, but they'll also be on 360 if you really wanna play them on a console. Plus you seem to already be invested in PS+ anyway.
OP How are you going to play Persona on XB1 lol.

Also take into account its a long term investment.
As if the PS4 were any better there. Unless Atlus makes it cross gen, seems like a good idea at this point if the PS4's really easy to develop for and considering BC's not an option.

PS4

$100 cheaper
Superior first party studios
PS+ is cheaper than XBL Gold and offers better value
Better hardware
Superior multiplats
