Please gaf, help me pick between PS4 and Xbox One

PS4

$100 cheaper
Superior first party studios
PS+ is cheaper than XBL Gold and offers better value
Better hardware
Superior multiplats

This, though I really want to see more of their first party line-up. That and it has great indie support, which is a big pull for me.

PS4 all the way

Better future exclusives
More Powerful
Better Controller
PS Plus
Better Community
Niche Titles
PS Now
Multiplatform ports will be much superior
Cheaper

Seriously there is no point even comparing, unless you really want Halo, which went stale after the first one!

Forza gets blown away by GT6 already and MS don't even have a PGR, but Sony now have Driveclub.

How can anyone miss out on the new Uncharted, or The Last of Us, The Last Guardian, God of War, Gran Turismo, Demon's Souls 2, New Ni No Kuni etc etc

If I were you I'd buy neither. If I'm conflicted about a purchase I'll probably feel terrible spending that much money. Only buy it when the purchase makes sense and missing an Xbox/PS4 is a more pressing issue. Don't buy just because.

Glanced a little at the OP.

Friends getting Destiny on PS4? Yeah just go with that, there's a huge pile of reasons I'd point at, but the two that are the most distinct that can tip the scales one way or the other is where friends are playing and what games you want, and launch titles can just be played later when the system's cheaper and the games are likely going for $10 in GameStop bargain bins anyway. Like you said the other exclusives you're interested in will be on PC, but they'll also be on 360 if you really wanna play them on a console. Plus you seem to already be invested in PS+ anyway.

As if the PS4 were any better there. Unless Atlus makes it cross gen, seems like a good idea at this point if the PS4's really easy to develop for and considering BC's not an option.

What are you talking about. Just like the PS1, PS2 and PS3 the PS4 will also have Persona games lol.

Not to mention theres a possibility Persona 5 will come to PS4 and P6 which is probably two years out will come too sinceSEGA ain't stupid to put the game out on a 11 year old platform and ones thats doing notably worse than the PS2.

It comes down to one thing for me really. Naughty Dog develops games exclusively for PlayStation. As long as Naughty Dog remains in business I will always have a Sony console.

Pretty much this AND Gran Turismo, I just have a feeling they are going to blow everyone away when they show what they are cooking up on the PS4.

Hold out until the systems have more games. Maybe in Q4 this year, the PS4 lineup looks better for you or MS manages to get your interest for Kinect until then. If you really want to buy now, get an X1 because it seems that it has the games you are interested in. Maybe you can get a PS4 too later (If you have the money)

Do you like the Kinect and feel it could meaningfully enhance your gaming or at least overall user experience? Then get an X-Box One.

Do you dislike the Kinect, or are you generally ambivalent toward it? Then get a PS4.

Complex problems, simple solutions.

PS4. You don't buy a console for launch window games. You buy it for an entire generation.

Unless you can't live without Halo and few other XO exclusives, go for better multiplats, cheaper and stronger system (better framerate, higher res and higher level of detail), system which offers amazing free lineup through PS+. Not to mention Sony has the balls to invest into projects like Quantic Dream games, Flower, Journey, etc. while Microsoft prefers more cookie cutter approach to games.

Let's also not forget that PS4 has some sick exclusives coming in 2014/2015.

Having both consoles, one aspect that devalues the Xbox One, apart from the performance gap already mentioned in this thread, is that Kinect 2 is underwhelming, but still comes bundled with each box. I really expected more than vanilla voice control that only works 80% of the time and isn't even consistently available throughout the system. I am unsure whether they'll be able to improve that in the future, but right know Kinect doesn't live up to its promises.

I am certain that Microsoft won't sell a kinect-less SKU in the near future (if ever), but if I'd only buy one console, not being forced to pay for a piece of hardware that adds little-to-nothing to actual gaming, but was pretty obviously added to the system to boost Microsoft's other products and services (Skype, Win8 apps, media stores) and to serve as a basis for NuAds (they will come), adds greatly to my sympathy towards Sony's product.

This is what GAF owners think from owning both.

PS: 35
Xbox: 59

OP go read it to see peoples experiences with both. Main reason cited for Xbox One is better games available.

If that were true i wouldnt have sold my PS4. I'll buy it when a better selection of games are out (waiting for Uncharted).

How many would vote that way if they could only afford to own one console for the next 3-4 years though? That is the real question. The majority won't be purchasing both for a long, long time.

And I imagine being willing to buy the XB1 in the first place predisposes you to it somewhat.

Simply going by launch, yeah, it has the edge selection-wise, but what's there at launch isn't what makes a system worth owning in the long run, especially in this age of multiplats.

If you want to play games at their best: PS4

If you want to waft at your TV, whilst Skyping your nan, maybe play games as an afterthought and don't mind paying the same price for worse versions of games: Xbox.

Just go with the system that has the games you want to play and where you feel at "home". The rest is extra.

As we dont know whats in store for the next 3/4 years i dont think that cant be answered at least after e3. From what we know officially, both have a great selection of exclusives lined up, if you want to purchase based on future experiences pick and chose which one you like and go with that.

Despite the games out I think the PS4 offers the better gaming experience. More 1080/60, quicker installs, main gripes about the PS3 are resolved in the pad and the interface. PsPlus stays, games are on their way, so far, a bigger selection. I just see it all as much better value for money.

Got a PS4. It's cheaper and I like Sony exclusives. I would love to play Dead Rising 3 too. For now it's collecting dust on the shelf so if there's nothing you really would like to play I'd say "wait".

I got a PS4 at launch but if I could do it all again I'd definitely buy an Xbox One. The PS4 just seems so generic to me.

The current difference in library is basically a larger number of mediocre exclusives on XB1 than on PS4. Not a great reason to spend $500 (or $400) honestly. I mean, Resogun is the only truly exceptional game on either system currently.

And before you go buying an XB1 for Titanfall when you're already planning to play Destiny with your friend you should ask yourself if you really have time for two online focused shooters. Otherwise you might find that come Destiny's release you will be playing very little Titanfall going forward, after using it as the primary reason to buy a $500 console, $60 XBL Gold membership, etc..

Meanwhile current gen is still going strong with some big titles releasing this spring. Why not enjoy the last salvo of current gen titles? Hell, Titanfall is coming out for X360. You could quite easily just pick it up there, renew your Gold sub for a few months, and see if it's a strong enough title to keep you playing even when your friend is on to Destiny.

It's really too early to base off exclusives unless there is something you must own.
You also have to remember that being a forum on the Internet you will get a lot of extreme views here like the tomb raider fiasco.

But right now I would get a ps4 . It's cheaper and will play multiplats the best.

Celebration
Let's all celebrate and have a good time
Everyone around the world
Come on!

Had a PS4.. got bored very quickly.
Sold it and got an Xbox One.

Don't get me wrong, I know it's the unpopular thing to do - but there are more games on Xbox One and more games coming to Xbox One that I care about.

Sure, I'm going to get lower res. versions of the same games available at better res. on PS4 - but really, it's all about the exclusives.

PS4 is a great console.
Xbox One feels like a console from the future.

That's to paraphrase Adam Sessler and I completely agree with him in this.

If you get one now i would say get ps4.
Maybe get the X1 down the line.

The reason more bangs for bucks if consoles is the only thing you game on.
Capable gaming pc get the one with the exclusive that resonate with you.

Completely agree. How much were you able to get for your ps4?

You seem to be fine financially.

If you want something now get the X1. You'll enjoy the games you listed.

Pick up a PS4 later this year and you'll have the best of both going forward.

Go where the games you like to play are...I've had a PS4 since launch and it has served me very well since. I also just picked up an X1 for pretty cheap and I'm having a lot of fun with that too.

I don't think you can pick wrong in this type of situation....

1. Look at your game library last gen - how many multiplats and how many exclusives ?

2. How much time did you spend on multiplats and exclusives ?

3. If exclusives was a good percentage, and they are on xbox one, then = Xbone

4. If multiplats take up your gaming time, get the console that will play them better = Ps4

That's what I did, and I found even with exclusives which I might play for a day or 2, most of my gaming time was on stuff like mass effect 3 multiplayer, Borderlands 1&2, COD etc

So, I switched to PS4 as its more likely the games that invested my time will probably run and look better on the better spec console.

Games like dead rising, halo, Uncharted etc I spent a few nights on, but not weeks like my fav games...

My advice would be. Get the higher priced system out the way....

1) Because you will never have to worry about spending $500 dollars again. So there is a peace of mind factor.

2) Because, currently, the games you want to play is on that system. If your not someone who extremely busy and you have the time to pour time into the system, it's definitely the best one to go buy.

3) Games are all that matters and that's the reason why it's the best choice right now.

You can always get a PS4 later. And since the Xbox is out there, it's a much easier decision. I doubt you will regret it when your playing those games. The TV stuff you won't have to worry about either if your not using it.

TITANFALL and Plants vs Zombies are multi-platform games, you don't need an Xbox One to play any of those games.

You said there aren't any PS4 exclusives you're looking forward to but you mention Forza 5 as a game that interests you; however you disregard two exclusive Sony racers -- DRIVECLUB and Gran Turismo. Killer Instinct is probably the only title in there that makes sense. Dead Rising will most likely go multi-platform for their next game unless Microsoft buy it out again.

You've also got to take into account that Xbox One will most likely not get any support from a lot of Japanese game developers either.

AS a long term xbox fan I really don't understand why anyone would choose an xbox one over a ps4 first. I really don't but that's just my opinion

All I can do is share my reasoning why I bought my PS4 instead of an Xbox One. Keep in mind I bought an original Xbox on day-one, and played mainly on the 360 for most of last gen.

When you buy a console at the start of a generation you should buy it not just considering the games already available but also on it's potential to deliver games in the next few years at least. After all, it's an expensive investment. The PS4 has the better specs and the advantage in that space is already showing this early. Since both platforms share essentially the same architecture with just one being considerably weaker than the other, that advantage will just become increasingly more apparent and important as time goes by.

The higher chances of having a much more varied library of games. Sony has a huge stable of first party developers capable of delivering both AAA and quirky and unusual titles. They also have good relations with most third party publishers and their push in the indie space is all well known. Also chances of it becoming the console of choice for Japanese developers are higher.

PS+ is actually a service, not just a pay-wall. I stopped paying for Live halfway into last generation once PS3 versions of multipaform releases achieved parity. These days I get games every month for my PSVita, PS3 and PS4! And good games at that, and some times games that I wouldn't try otherwise. This meant I had Resogun from day one. The value proposition is just too good to ignore.

The kickers:
- DRM debacle from the reveal, to the shills on Neogaf, to Panello's and Nelson's intelligence insulting PR stunts. Before this even with the focus on Kinnect and less focus on original content and first parties on later years, I din't have much to say against Xbox (maybe just Live). These things changed my perception of Microsoft completely. Even if less powerful the Xbox One is still a great product, but these things meant they completely lost me as an early adopter. Specially considering that even after the 180º they didn't show any sign of understanding why that was the wrong approach.

- TV services irrelevant/not available where I live.

- 100€ price difference. With those 100€ I got a pack with an extra controller, camera and Killzone.

Fun fact: Reading my own reasons it's kind of strange noticing the price difference was not that important.

PS4 , better multiplats and PS exclusives, PS+ and is cheaper.

If you just care about launch games and prefer Xbox exclusives then Xbone.

People are still jaded by launch. A lot more has been released on the PS4 since launch... Some really fun games. Escape Plan, Don't Starve, Trine 2, Zen Pinball, and more. Also Resogun and Don't Starve will not be free on PSN for long so make sure to build up you collection now if you have PSN+ on the site to build up your gaming collection if you do decide to go PS4 down the road.

Is this really even a hard to answer question at this point?

PS4 is the obvious answer.

+ Cheaper
+ Much more powerful
+ Better controller (opinion)
+ Better UI (opinion)
+ Quicker installs, updates and loading
+ PS+ (which you already have on PS3 and carries over)
+ Better friends and party system
+ Better trophy/achievements viewing and system
+ Twitch online streaming and screenshot functionality
+ Easy to remove and replace HDD should you want an SSHD or more space
+ Better first party studios (opinion)

Games are about the same right now, but every single multi platform game is going to be a much better version on the PS4, and add to that there are tonnes of games planned just for the next few months. For example, for just the first half of 2014.

DriveClub
Planetside 2
Final Fantasy XIV
Watchdogs
InFamous Second Son
The Crew
Outlast
Secret Ponchos
Thief
Diablo 3
Destiny
Thief
DC Universe Online
The Witness
Hookum
Octodad
Oddworld New 'n' Tasty
Galak-Z
Divekick
Blacklight Retribution

And then later in the year you've got potential big hitters from Naughty Dog, a new Santa Monica IP, The Order 1886 and so on.

The Xbox One's big early 2014 game is TitanFall, but you can always get that on your PC or 360, so I don't think it's really worth £430 for the weaker multi platform system, with more kinks and issues with it's UI, installs, updates and all the rest.

Not going to read through the pages of responses, but I am curious why you'd say no interest in upcoming Sony games and then say you think Forza looks good? Pretty sure driveclub will be similar enough to be a good game for you if you think you'd have liked Forza.

I also wouldn't discount some of the other exclusive to console games coming out for and already out for PS4; my friends can't stop playing Warframe and War Thunder lately, and both are free games. Plus just gave out Don't Starve for free and it is getting really good reviews as well. On top of that you can count on getting what should be a solid race sim game for mostly free in a month or two.

Personally I'd go with the system that my friends will get, and since all of my friends already bought PS4, it made my choice easy. The bonus being I also really like a lot of the exclusive Sony library and plus is so great compared to gold it makes me happy with my choice.

Sooooo

1. Friends play? pick that

2. Have no friends you'd miss? What company has a history of exclusive content you prefer? pick that, this is a long term investment so don't base it on games that will have dust on them in a year.

3. Plan on buying both eventually? Buy the one that has the games you want now.

Do you plan on owning both eventually? If so just get the Xbox One and get a PS4 after a year or two. You'll get the games you want now, and then the better multiplats (if you care) and PS exclusives later.

Do you plan on buying only one console? That's a more tricky question. If you had a 360, how many games that you bought were multiplat or exclusive? Same for your PS3. Which system had more exclusives you value? That's a point to take note of. What genre's do you prefer? If you like Persona and other Japanese games, then PS4 might be the better choice in the long run. However since you are interested in the likes of Titanfall and Destiny, Xbox One will serve you well also.

Do you have to make the choice now? You say you have a PS3 you enjoy and make use of PS+ games. If that is the case, could you get by on those games for now, and make a more informed decision after E3 where there'll be more games announced and possibly even a price cut for Xbox One.

Personally I'd wait. Unless you're extremely eager to play those Xbox One exclusives now, just keep playing on the systems you have currently own and make the call after E3

I had an XBox One, couldn't help looking at it and thinking I paid $500 for this...
xbox-one-teardown-578-80.jpg

Just look at the engineering and care Sony put into the PS4. I can see where my $400 went. Also with PS4 you get to feel that GDDR5.
sono2-1-2.jpg

If you bought an XB1, you'd be hamstringing potential multiplat titles over the course of the generation, miss out on Sony's superior first-party portfolio, and be paying $100 more to boot. It's a no brainer.

I don't really understand why anyone would buy an Xbone at this time and thus pay more for less, even given the small handful of good exclusives it has at the moment. We know PS4 is going to get a steady stream of quality exclusives, starting soon.

The OP says he already has PS+, which is yet another reason to go with PS4.
Since Xbone locks ALL online features behind the Live paywall (while really giving you nothing in return), there basically is no way to avoid paying for Xbox Live, as well.

A sensible strategy would be: Buy a PS4 now, make it your main platform for which you purchase exclusives and superior multiplats (=all of them, as it looks now) and use it for playing online.
Then wait a couple of years until a few Xbone price drops have occured (which will happen rather sooner than later, also depending on how much Xbone is outsold by PS4), then buy a cheap Xbone to play its worthwhile exclusives.

In my opinion, Xbone simply does not offer good value for money compared to PS4. Given the power gap, Xbone should cost closer to $300 USD instead of $500. Makes sense?

I'm being as objective as possible here. My personal opinion of Xbone and Microsoft is much more negative; I still believe they need to be punished for trying to take away game ownership from us. Given how they already succeeded with this stuff on the business side (OS and Office), I am convinced they'll try the same again with their next console, depending on how well Xbone does. I also don't agree with their practice of bribing companies to withhold games from competing platforms, and pressuring indies into releasing games on their system first and forcing parity for indie titles. I also don't like how virtually all of their Xbone launch games are littered with microtransactions, which is not exactly a good omen. Last but not least, Xbone appears to have been very much rushed (to prevent a PS4 headstart) while its OS and launch titles are still under construction even now. Beta tested in the future?

To summarize my opinion: The smaller Microsoft's market share will be during this eighth generation of game consoles, the better for gaming as a whole.

Don't invest in a $400-500 console based on what you want to play right *now* unless you have so much money that you can just throw it around like that.

Buy a console based on what it's going to bring you in the upcoming years.

I disagree with this. If there's nothing to play right now, then don't buy the machine, and just buy later. If there's stuff you want to play now on X1, buy it and if required sell it for a PS4 when the software shifts in its favour. You're not locked into a machine for the next 6 years just because you bought it today.

I really hate the "buy it for future games that may come" reasoning. That worked out so well for people buying a PS3 for Versus 13, TLG, and exclusive Resi5, DMC4, FF13 etc.

Don't get either yet. Keep playing those free PS3 games from PS+ along with Dark Souls 2, MGS Ground Zeros and Persona 5. You can live without Infamous, Dead Rising and all those useless games.
