Please gaf, help me pick between PS4 and Xbox One

I would go with the PlayStation 4 for the long term. Your friends will be there to play the multiplayer games and youre already subscribed to a service that offers value for money compared to Xbox Live.

I only have an Xbox One just to add and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with Dead Rising 3, but other than that, it's been sitting there not doing much else. I also haven't taken the kinect out of the box; it's utterly useless for me.

It works but as I can't log in with my user I can't download games or get trophies.

Been trying for two hours now, I have gotten it to download but then it won't install, will try to put the update on a usb stick but honestly, how does a problem like this exist two months after the launch?

I didn't even try to update online when the console first released. Just download on to the usb and install from safe mode. however make sure you use the right file. If you are changing your hdd to a larger one you need a different file that is over 800mb.

Given your devotion to getting the best version, one can only assume you were a huge supporter of people buying an Xbox 360 last gen :p

Indeed. I bought most of my multplatform games on the 360 and mostly owned the PS3 for exclusives or the odd (mostly later in the generation) multplatform version of game that was about the same or rarely, better.

Ok this was a fun thread.

Buying Xbone because of DR3 and KI and FM5. Because all zombie games are exclusive to Xbox and fightings too and driving sims also. Hey let's all buy Xbox One even though every multiplatform release on it will be worse than on PS4.

For me Quantum Break remains the only game I'm interested in on XBO. Literally every other currently announced XBO exclusive is nothing to run circles around.

Neither.

When you would be able to buy 5 games you WANT to play than buy the console

edit :
Never Buy a Console at Launch Window

I bought Killzone, Knack (free with amazone b2g1 deal), Assassin's Creed 4, Battlefield, and COD at launch all of which I wanted, except maybe COD. I ended up getting nba2k14 later for $40 which I absolutely had no interest in and didn't want but bought anyway cause my friends bought it. I ended up getting Don't Starve for free I didn't know it was coming) and I've been playing nothing but the one game I didn't have an interest in and a free game I didn't know was coming at all. Point is this early in the life cycle you just can't make a decision based on what is available right now.

The answer sounds blatantly obvious base off your pros and cons. If you can't afford both console it seems to me money is an issue. The fact that you already have psplus and have not have gold in about a year. Ps4 seems to be the better value. Plus view console ownership as a long term investment because with lifespans of 5 plus years, that is exactly what it is. You know games are coming for both consoles. Make a list of known exclusives and ip that you know that are coming. Go with the one that will have more exclusive games you would enjoy.

Why not just wait until more games comes out. Only a few months for some great games coming to both consoles.

You know that there will be plenty of games, but not plenty of games that you'll actually like. OP already stated that he hated Infamous for example. How can you be sure he won't dislike most of what's released exclusively for the next year or so?

Yea, those examples are just as valid. The point is you can't assume that you need a specific console in order to play any given third party games... even if they are published by the console maker.

Well it's completely anecdotal on my part, but I've never met a person who gamed exclusively on the 360, and didn't end up liking any of it's exclusives, same can be applied to people who gamed exclusively on PS3 (this was me, and I found tons of exclusive I enjoyed).

People in general will find games to enjoy on their platform of choice, be it buyers guilt that factors enjoyment, or just sheer volume of games (which we know both will have). OP is already rooted in the Playstation ecosystem, so that's not a barrier for entry. For already being established, he/she? will be rewarded by having the console with better hardware, that happens to be $100 cheaper.

360 had an advantage in some aspects last gen by having the superior mult-plats, this was probably balanced out by having much weaker first party output in the long run. The PS4 is literally capitalizing on both right now.

I just think OP is in a position to better utilize the PS4, the barrier for entry is much smaller, and chances for potential buyers remorse are small. OP will get the free games, be able to utilize remote play, and have the superior Multi-plats.

Indeed. I bought most of my multplatform games on the 360 and mostly owned the PS3 for exclusives or the odd (mostly later in the generation) multplatform version of game that was about the same or rarely, better.

Well that's a wrap then. Get the PS4 as you will have the exclusives AND the best multi-platform games. :)

Sony has the best stable of first party studios, by far. Just like ps3 and 360, in the long run ps4 will pull away in quality. Unlike the previous gen, they have the head start too. This means more devs choosing ps4 for primary platform, and sometimes as exclusive. Today? I prefer ps4 library too. But I'm not a dudebro.

If I was only getting one console I would be adhering to your line of thinking as well. Can't argue against games people want though even if it doesn't make sense to you. I bought a XBone for a mediocre but fun zombie game and a Halo game I will likely be disappointed with as well. Does it make sense. Not really but that's what I wanted. My reasoning is if things get really bad for the X1 I should be able to get at least half back and it won't have felt like money wasted to me.

Thanks for this honest reply! It's nice to see that you are able to maintain a level of objectivity and don't try to justify your purchase as rational or even sensible. I fully understand that the urge to play certain games without delay can be strong; it's not a matter of reason.
On the other hand, my suggestion to go with PS4 first is more about looking at the big-picture and the times ahead instead of making a spur of the moment purchase decision.

Simply from a gaming perspective, since your Xbone reasons mostly rests on games that are out and playable now, I say get neither console now.

Hold off. Find something else to play for a few months until E3. See what happens at the big show. Then you will have a much better idea of what the future holds for these two consoles.

You want to be picking a console as an investment in the future.
You don't want to be picking a console for a few more games to play today.

Seriously, you just want excuses to blow money right now. Given your dilemma, neither console is worth buying at this time.

Forza 5, Titanfall, and Dead Rising 3 can completely validate the purchase. Forza 5, Xbox One kinect functionality, and the controller alone have validated it for me.

OP: Careful how much you listen to the replies on this thread. I haven't seen too many GAFers who actually have an Xbox One. Consequently, the perspectives are skewed by bias or limited insight.

I would say if you're really interested in the exclusives, need something now, and the 3rd party releases going to get both eventually, for you get the XBO now, PS4 in 6 months to a year. If you're not sure/would rather stick to one console for the gen, or shared releases can tide you over, PS4.

I don't disagree with this. I've never owned a console that I couldn't find any software on it that I enjoyed. However, I have owned multiple which didn't have enough to prevent me from questioning my purchase. The N64 immediately comes to mind for me personally. There were games I liked on it, but nowhere near enough to prevent it from collecting some serious dust in comparison to my Playstation and Saturn at the time.

I'm just saying that maybe the OP shouldn't be buying a PS4 right now if nothing other than Resogun interests him... especially if he expects not to like the new Infamous (and by him saying nothing he wants is out anytime soon, it doesn't seem like he cares about Driveclub either). If there are things right now he wants on X1, he could just play those now, and then trade the machine in for a PS4 when it has games he wants (and if X1 games he wants begin to dry up). I just don't understand why someone would recommend someone spend $400 on a console, if they may not have anything to play on it for an indefinite window of time.

You should get "The One" (tm) because thanks to its weaker hardware, you can enjoy a "cinematic" experience at 24 or 30 fps while PS4 owner will get freaked out by the overly smooth framerate on the PS4.

You're welcome.

This wasn't even clever.

At this point, there's no particular reason to hop on the current gen bandwagon until say, April or so.

I'm still convinced DR3 will come to PS4 and possibly PC in some form or another. Greedy capcom will just release some re-named version of it or whatever like they do with many of there games.

Sell possessions/ drugs/ body/ body parts and or family members to afford both consoles.

Anyway, as an owner of all three next gen consoles, I would lean towards the PS4. It's the cheaper and more powerful system. Assuming it's still available, you get a free month of PS+, Music Unlimited and a $10 voucher. Launch units had that, I'm not sure if current stock still does. Resogun and Don't Starve are currently free with PS+ too.

Both the PS4 and Xbox One have great games. Which games you prefer and what not is all subjective. But the difference at the end of day is that the PS4 gives you more value and bang for your buck right out of the box. Xbox One doesn't, unless you really love Kinect and watching live TV.

If anything, capcom will continue letting ms fund dead rising games for the xbox until they gain financial stability and feel confident investing in a dead rising game again. It's either let te franchise die or let ms borrow it. At least if ms funds the games, dead rising remains relevant.

If I view a particular system as only being more worthwhile in the long run, then I am going to wait before dropping hundreds of dollars on it. The notion that you should buy something that you feel might be better down the road over something that has more of what you want now is ridiculous.

It's simple. If you are ready to buy, get the one that appeals to you more straight out of the box. Then pick up the other once it starts to live up to those future promises, rather than watching it collect dust until it does. Ultimately, you will eventually have the best of both worlds. But at the end of the day, only you can make that decision.

You must choose!

Majority of gamers buy multiplats. Get a PS4 where they will all look and perform better. Unless you really love Halo.

I wish I could go by that, but I only really have 1 friend, and he hasn't decided which system he's getting either, lol. He just keeps telling me that he's likely going to get Destiny on PS4 because that's where his other friends will play it.

That's where 'll be playing Destiny and I invite you to get yourself a PS4 and Destiny and bring your friend to join the group I joined via Bungie.net called Blood of the Fold (the creator is obviously a fan of the book). Most of us are participating in the Beta together and we have a good following already.

Choice made easy.

Wouldn't surprise me, but I think it's more likely that DR4 or whatever will end up on PS4, just like DR2 on PS3.

...Or any of the other games coming to Xbox One that won't come out to PS4. Love the "Halo" posts in the thread as if that's the only unique game on Xbox.

The xbox one has more appealing games as of right now. I'd say that It will keep you busy for the next year at most (With just Forza, KI, Titanfall, and Dead Rising.)

Since I own the PS4 I can tell you right now it will be collecting dust for the next couple of months or so. I already beat all of the games that I was interested in, and had to repurchase a PS3 to keep myself occupied.

Sony's exclusives will trump Microsofts in the long term( next two years) Its just a waiting game. I think your biggest worry is how to keep yourself occupied in that time frame.

MLB the Show, 2k14 and madden alone will keep you business until next year if you are a sports fan, not to mention Fifa. Drive club, infamous, deep down (free), and the Order out this year also. Outlast in Feb free also. i really don't understand this nothing to play on Ps4 thinking.

I only bring up the PS4 recommendation based on the price-point and that he's already a member of PS+. Jumping onto the Bone because again a few titles (we don't know much about future releases) seems like a heavy handed investment. The box is already more expensive, and he's not a gold subscriber. PS4 being $400 is his one drop cost. He'd get to check out the PS+ stuff, love the hell out of Resogun, and experiment with the indy stuff.

I went with the PS4. The shoddy practices of MS left a bad taste in my mouth immediately following its announcement. Both in a short and long term sense the PS4 is a better deal. Stronger machine for cheaper price. Decent mixture of first and third party games during its launch window (F2P and PS+ also help) and knowing that pretty much all third party games in the future will run superior made it an easy choice.

I used to be a massive Halo fan as well but 4 pretty much killed my interest in that series stone dead. There are a few games I'd be interested in playing but nothing that makes me want to drop £££ any time soon. Also I don't care for TV or Kinect.

Also even though last gen my main machine was the 360 the lack of support in its closing years was awful. It basically became my 3rd party machine whilst the PS3 at least kept realising solid games leading up to the generational leap. That is another factor in my choice to pick PS4.

Yea, PS+ is definitely a benefit for going PS4 (especially as he doesn't have XBL right now). I only have an issue with people essentially saying "get a PS4, all the games are going to be on there" when the current reality for the OP (and remember, this is who the console is for, NOT for ourselves) appears to be the direct opposite. We are literally talking 5 games he's interested in on one platform vs 1 on the other....

Basically he can try out the PS4 games because that's what's available to him, or he can try out the Xbox One games that he's already actually interested in. To me, recommending he get a machine for a load of games he may like makes little sense when compared to a selection of games he has already identified that he probably will like. He can always claim the PS+ games anyway for use in the future, so it's not like he has to buy the console to play them now...

given MS's history, it might be at the end of the gen.

I'm not about to go through my library to create a list, but let's just stop being silly here...

Sorry for the long post but I found an amazing speech outlining the reasons to buy an Xbone. Its kind of long so I shorted it to the best parts. It's a shame the author is unknown but I think it should help you decide which system to get.

Today I'm gonna talk about the Xbox One and the Playstation 4, and why the Xbox One is better. To start things off when you compare the systems and you look at the specs, there really isn't much of a difference. As you can see on this graph here, they have the same CPU and GPU pretty much (shows screen on his laptop that is impossible to make out on camera), and they both have 500 gig hard drives. They both have blu-ray players which was the main reason when the PS3 xbox 360 came out, the playstation was supposedly better because it had a blu-ray player, and the graphics were enhanced. But now they both have blu-ray players, now they both have HDMI audio and video outs and no longer use component. And they both have 3.0 usb ports which makes for a faster connection.

Now this right here is where the Xbox and Playstation really just go their separate ways. The community is very important for any system that is going to have online. The playstation community is really boring, the people just aren't fun to play with, and when you're playing online with other people, the skill level, the players, the playstation are probably like a three. And when who has never played before can come in and stomp on like 80% of the people that play online, you know your community is really garbage, and all the playstation community does is complain about everything, and all they care about is graphics, and games like...they don't really care about the gameplay or the online at all, they just want like a really good, like a movie, and cuz most people on playstation don't even use a mic, so when you're playing games online, it's a team based game, it's an all around terrible time, because you can't even communicate with em when they're never even using mics.

...

And there will never be a system with a perfect community, but Xbox one has pretty close to that perfect community, where it's the average, there's pretty much all good players, the community. Everyone talks to each other so it's nothing like yous just come and sit down, and play online like playstation, and you have no communication at all, it's just really boring cuz no one's good.

And the lasts part, it's uh system exclusives. Now playstation had claimed that better exclusives than xbox every had with their Uncharted and all that stuff, but it's really not true. Game exclusives are what define a system, and when you compare the 360 to playstation 3, the exclusive, the xbox exclusives were way better than playstation exclusives. Even though playstation claims that such good exclusive titles. And the main like, exclusives that everyone talks about on playstation is killzone, uncharted, and god of war. And with 360, it was gears of war, halo, and dead rising. Now all of these games are transferring to new systems, ps4 and xbox one so the exclusives are gonna be the same, but they're always gonna be going with their exclusives. And I really doubt playstation will ever be able to top uncharted. I feel like they hit their peak with uncharted, and they're never gonna get a better exclusive than that. So there's really no point even owning a PS4.

...

The Xbox is overall better than the playstation because of a community of exclusive titles. Even though the playstation does cost 400, compared to the xbox which costs 500. You know that the extra hundred that you're spending is gonna get more features and stuff you're gonna like because of the community is always expanding and always growing, with a better community. And playstation is slowly going downhill, and that's why you should get an xbox one over a playstation 4.

Titanfall and PvZ GW I COULD play both on my PC if I really wanted to, but I'm one of those gamers who does just prefer playing games with a gamepad. Even if I tried playing those games on my PC, I wouldn't feel evenly matched.
Why couldn't you play those on PC with a gamepad?

Key information highlighted. He would get slaughtered online trying to fight against keyboard/mouse players using a joypad.

Ah, I see, that does make more sense. For some reason I was thinking he meant he felt his skills with keyboard/mouse wouldn't be up to par and would thus feel outmatched, but your explanation makes more sense.

Except I'm doing it, and there's almost no lag. I don't know what to tell you.

That's footage from IGN, running the Wii U over the Xbox One's HDMI-In:

It's less than the subjective second that I feel with my AppleTV (I guess the Apple TV adds its own share of lag to its controls), but it's still enough to make gaming a non-viable option.

While I was researching to see if it was worth it, I ran across this video...

...among others that cite unnoticeable lag. I've found it to be the same. So I guess I'm not as bothered by any perceived lag as you. *shrug*

Not always, but there have been a few times where I did notice that lag myself. When I don't notice it, it's fine...but when I spotted it in a game once, and I continued to notice it, it kinda drove me crazy.

As much as I like the gamepad for the Wii U, I really do start wishing that it wasn't mandatory for the system so much. Especially for some games that take no advantage of it, and just have the same image on the gamepad that's on the TV. I'm happier if it's even just a menu screen or map on the gamepad, but when it's the same damn image on both the TV and gamepad, and a game will not even give me the option to use a pro controller. That stuff kinda pisses me off.

There's a tiny bit of lag, but not enough to make it chore to play games this way. Its barely noticeable. What's so hard to understand?

For a platformer that tiny bit of lag can be terrible and kill you.

edit: And I am just arguing over input lag...not running shit through your XBO.

All this talk about PS+...

MS said Games with Gold (2 free games a month) is coming to Xbox One eventually. Do you have to keep a Gold subscription to play the games you download from it like you must have a current PS+ subscription to play PS+ downloads?

...among others that cite unnoticeable lag. I've found it to be the same. So I guess I'm not as bothered by any perceived lag as you. *shrug*

In certain genres, that lag is enough to have a significant impact. For instance, I can't play Battlefield 4 via Remote Play on my Vita, because the inherent lag - similar to the one on the IGN-footage - is too much for a shooter. (I guess the wireless network contention in my home is too much, although I connected the Vita directly to my PS4, not via my network router.) I can fully move my finger away from the trigger button before I even see the reaction on screen. That delay completely screws my aim at moving targets.

I haven't kept track completely with what they've offered, but I honestly feel games with gold is so half assed compared to PS plus. Their attempt at offering games with gold was just something they felt they had to do because people were loving PS plus so much, but even then, they weren't willing to actually deliver titles that really seemed worth it.

I remember when they announced it, they said they were gonna offer Assassin's Creed 2, and Halo 3! Oooooh, whoop de fucking doo! 2 games that while they may have been fine at the time they came out, most people who owned an xbox 360 probably played them at that point, and if they didn't...you could probably buy both of them cheaper than the cost of a month xbox live from gamestop's used section.
