Please recommend me a modern anime where the protagonist isn't an obnoxious dweeb

I was gonna say My Love Story!! based on title alone, but it doesn't seem like it'd be up your alley.

Parasyte is pretty good if you haven't already seen it.

Yeah, I know a bunch of non-anime fans IRL who literally turned off Steins;Gate within minutes because the protag was so painful

I've been watching anime for almost 25 years and Steins;Gate's MC might be my least fav anime character of all time.

I will never ever understand the love for that show.

Time to get in to fighting animes. Stuff like Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Dragon Ball, One Punch Man or Hunter x Hunter.

Everyone in Attack on Titan sucks? Dunno what you're talking about, AoT has amazing characterization and development. Then again I read the manga which I like more so maybe you just haven't been exposed to the source material.

Eren is horrendous and actively makes the entire show around him worse whenever he's featured, and his major trademark as a character is that he's full of hot air and bravado but can absolutely never back it up because he's pathetically useless (and yet also just about the most important person in the world, just to make his existence as a protagonist all the more frustrating). One of the biggest reasons why Season 2 was so vastly superior to the first season was the fact that Eren was essentially relegated to the part of a bit player for most of the season.

Anyway, I'll throw my vote in for Monster, even though it's maybe not quite "modern" anymore given that it's over a decade old.

If you're cool with something that's not at all modern in the slightest, then totally check out Legend of the Galactic Heroes, a.k.a. the best space opera ever, which has two equally awesome but very different main protagonists in Reinhard von Lohengramm and Yang Wen-Li. Production I.G is actually working on a remake of LOGH right now, though, if you want to wait to see how that pans out rather than checking out the quite old OVA (in fact there's supposed to be an event next week introducing the new voice cast and staff, I think).

By the way, since you mentioned Durarara!!, that series is more of an ensemble cast rather than one singular protagonist, so it doesn't always keep its focus on Mikado. And there's really quite a bit more to Mikado than is immediately apparent.

My girlfriend is watching My Hero Academia and I really can't stand this fucking kid. He sucks. Everything about him sucks.

Tried watching Attack on Titan acouple years back, but aside from the sister character, everyone in that show sucks too.

Watched the first episode of Durarara on a random whim (the Netflix image looked neat) and instead of doing cool shit with Japanese Lady Batman, we're stuck spending 80% of the time hanging out with the teenage equivalent of Otacon from Metal Gear Solid.
"IT'S JUST LIKE ONE OF MY ANIMES!"

I mean if I just wanted to see cool fights, I could easily just type "best fights from ___" into Youtube. Hell, studying and referencing that shit is already part of my job. But is it so fucking hard to find a show that can actually come off genuinely cool, or at the very least, somewhat endearing? Little Witch Academia is literally the first success I've had with anime in maybe years. It manages to atleast be really charming, even if the attempts at a more dramatic story don't really work towards the back end.

Is it so fucking hard to find something that atleast makes me think of Cowboy Bebop, or Ghost in the Shell SAC? I haven't checked out the newer GitS series, that's on me.

I suppose I may wanna check out Polar Bear Cafe too because... I mean look at that fucking title. Of course I need to see what that's about.

Help. I'd like to have some actual enthusiasm towards modern anime again without rolling my eyes constantly.

I mean... no.

One of my favorite heroes in any animated show is Aang from Avatar. He's playful, he's adventurous, he wants to believe in the best in people. But that also can risk him being naive and viewing the world in simplistic and childish terms, which constantly clashes with the teachings of his spiritual upbringing. Those same teachings are also the only thing that he has to connect to the community he's lost.

He's a rounded character, and very rarely an asshole.

But when I talk about Deku or most other characters of the sort, they so very rarely have that same level of believability and humanity to them.

Im rolling my eyes at all of you because yall get turned off way too quick by these character lmao.

The Steins gate hate is really funny too. Okabe is fuuuuuun.

Its a slice of life anime lol.

Anyway, watch Tokyo Ghoul too

You also might like Zetsuen No Tempest.

Legend of Legendary Heroes is great too.

Perhaps just watch Seinen anime or the less fanservicey Light novels that get adapted every season.

It should be required reading tbh

You do know Kill la Kill has a bunch of underaged girls naked right? Then you got the super revealing outfits that shows more than it should.

Sure, I dont think thats what this thread is about though. I personally love the show and am happy to recommend it even if the nudity aspect of it gets really out there, thats for each viewer to decide if it crosses a line or not.

As someone who doesn't watch anime much at all, I watched Mob Psycho 100 during the Twitch marathon and yeah, I'd suggest it as well. The characters were likable, the fights are great, the humor was fun. It moved at a good pace, too.

You punks don't know the meaning of what a pathetic MC is until you've experienced Chaos Head.(the VN, I don't know anything about the anime version except it's worse)

One Punch Man is the best manga/anime ever made. It fixes everything wrong with anime: shitty protagonists, dumb power creep, sometimes creepy glorification of youth...

It nails everything except for the presence of women, but almost makes up for it by having not just equal but slightly more amounts of naked men than naked women, and overall objectification is actually rare.

ONE is good people.

It's not even the best thing ONE has made.

See this is what pedestrian tastes and reductive thinking gets you, one note and rote criticism that really only applies to battle manga from the mid 2000s lol

Yeah but Ippo is a dweeb, literally the opposite of what OP's looking for lol.. HNI would work for OP if Takamura was the main protagonist. And you really not bother to mention the guy in your OP first when he's looking exactly for that kind of main protagonist?

Ippo is totally a dweeb.

He's shy, sure. Not really a dweeb for me past the first episode. And he's totally endearing, come on.

I do deserve that slap though, LoDL. OP, watch Slam Dunk.

YOU'RE pedestrian

I think the traits I'm describing are present in most of the popular anime in the West

Main characters are 13-17 year-old doofuses, the world they live in eventually leans over and caters to them, women only exist as a 13-17 year-old's idea of what women should be

ITT: assholes are the best heroes

They're certainly the most interesting characters.

Have you ever watched Bojack Horseman? The main character is genuinely fascinating and he is one of the most disgusting and vile characters I've ever seen.

Ehh but Touma isn't a dweeb, he punches everyone in the face without discrimination. Men, women, boys, girls, young, old? He doesn't care.
He may not give any fucks but is still a one-dimensional character with a super boring personality that is interchangeable with other light novel self-insert protags.

Stop watching anime that's popular in the west then lmao. They're aimed at adolescents.

Hardly.

The most interesting characters are the ones with the most interesting responses to the conflicts they face.

Assholes are only good at seming cool or edgy or whatever prototypical idea of masculinity that pervades western thought.

Bojack is an asshole and has interesting responses to the conflicts he faces.

That said, another series of Bojack constantly being almost capable of becoming a better person would be quite boring. Something's gotta give, one way or the other.
