Silver was great because he gains a genuine respect for you and you are probably the closest thing to a friend he has. In HGSS when you beat him at the indigo plateau he apologizes for getting in your way and reminds you to heal up before facing the the elite four. He grows so much over the game and it's pretty neat to see in a pokemon game.

You know what I want? Points where the story should is OK with you losing.

The XY rivals would have been so much better if they're story could go in a different direction than "I'm not good enough"

Tbh the jerk rival for me wears off pretty fast considering you just stomp him every time. Barry ambushed you a lot of the time we random battles and while he was your friend he was still a tough rival. I liked that.

I'll agree Serena was not much of a threat in X/Y so eh if they pushed it back to Barry direction I would be fine.

Barry's dialogue and energetic gimmick was too damn annoying for me. I cringed at every "I'm fining you"

I don't mind friendly rivals, but there should be some amount of competition there, otherwise they're just friends. Pokedex Kid in XY would have more interesting if he actually had a chance to beat you in terms of pokemon collecting, for example. Even make him like the Aides in Gen I and give you items for meeting a certain number of Pokemon caught or something.

Basically this.

It's be cool if like in gen 1 some rival fights were one chance not and you could permanently lose them if you failed the first time. Maybe even make those rival fights particularly difficult

We also need a true boss battle after the Champion ala Red. Took the game to new heights, and possibly is the fondest memory of Pokemon.
I was gonna do images but there'd be so many it'd be annoying so okay...

Zinnia counts for gen VI...sorta.

Regarding rivals, Gary was the best. He talks shit the entire game and can actually back it up even though you beat him in battles since he's always one step ahead of you in terms of progressing through the world. Even when you beat the Elite 4 and think you've finally done it, you've become Champion... nah son, Gary did it first. You want the title? Come get it.

Yeah but N.

Sure it does. Red and Blue were rivals as kids.

I'm just so burnt out on friend rivals especially since there were THREE in the last game.
How? Gary is Oaks son and feels entitled due to that fact. He works hard and he beats every gym before you. He thinks he's better than you, and when you best him, he humbles himself but gains little respect for you.

No see, asshole rivals don't make sense if you always kick them to the nuts every time you fight. Now if the first fight gives you a mandatory lose, then sure it makes sense, but from what it looks like they just got early because they got their starter earlier. Nothing about their smugness makes sense at that.

This is like if say, Kamen Rider Necrom says "he is the strongest than you silly humans!" but every time he does that Kamen Rider Ghost keeps on kicking his ass. It just makes them look silly.

they don't need to

Yeah but as a character they look dumb.

This is why I think Barry and Gen V rivals were better (barring Bianca). Because they don't have the stupidity "asshole" rivals have but at the same time not the touchy-feely friendly rivals have. And even then Bianca wasn't meant to be a rival anyway.

They have this desire to battle. That's all that's important. The bloodlust of fighting and wanting to be stronger than you. None of that attitude problem.

Hell, he can be this cool comfy guy, or this lazy dude who lays back on tree branches, or even falls asleep in the middle of the road, but when he sees the trainer he goes "I don't understand why, but every time I see you fight, my body just boils up!" shit. And after the fight he can be this lazy dude again.

Blue/Green. Also he is not "one step ahead of you", he literally just got his starter earlier. Nothing about him screams better. He's just... faster. Also he's kinda pitiable too, what a terrible champion - he only lasts like, 3 mins.

N: "ooh I love pokemon! ooh we shouldn't fight! ooh show me your power! OOOOHHHHHH!!!"

Gary: "can't talk dude, got my bitches waitin for me back at the crib lmao. smell ya later"

you really should stop confusing anime Gary and game Blue, Blue had none of the shit you are thinking of

I mean if you're gonna go that path, are you saying Blue has insecurity issues and knows that he is a shitty trainer compared to the lead? lol

also N was done better at that aspect, he actually uses wild pokemon yet manages to apparently give you the trouble

Know what would be amazing: Post game final boss. You've beaten 5 of their pokemon. You've breathe a sigh of relief as the end of a harrowing fight is in sight. Then the AI does the unthinkable: It uses a max revive on the strongest pokemon. Once you beat the 6th pokemon, you now need to rebeat the strong pokemon, except this time it mega evolves

I mean both of them backed up what they said they were going to do (ie beat the E4 and Champion). How you feel about their personality
(in this case, shallow dumbass who runs his mouth even after I knock him the fuck down vs person who is in the awkward position of working with the villainous team but not being a villain themselves because he believes they serve the same cause he does)
isn't relevant to what I was saying.

Yeah, that's fair. I guess Emma/Essentia could count for XY, too
even though she only has three Pokemon for no real reason >~>

There's also the final Wally battles in ORAS where he uses a competitive team with items. And the battle maison still exists, even if it's no battle frontier.

Though ultimately, the comparisons to previous gens are a bit unfair, given major post game was always relegated to the third version, which Gen VI never got

Yeah, but Wally is a Rival and I left Rivals off the list under the assumption that generally there's a rematch between you and your rival(s)

Also I didn't count the Battle Maison because while the Battle Frontier facilities provide additional special challenges, the Battle Maison is really kinda just regular battling. You'll notice I didn't include the Battle Subway for the same reason.

like I said he is confusing anime Gary to game Blue/Green

Know what would be amazing?
Ash and Ash Greninja in-game as the final super secret boss
. Not only for the fight, but because I know it triggers a lot of people (that ORAS comment with Steve I know already made people angry) so just seeing people getting mad at that point would be hilarious.

When HG/SS were as feature rich and content complete as they were, there's no reason why OR/AS shouldn't be able to match that.

Practically speaking it didn't happen because HG/SS built a lot on the additions they made in Platinum, but they also went the route of just being straight up R/S remakes without incorporating anything of note from Emerald, unlike HG/SS which were actually being Crystal remakes with version differences.

Meh all you would have to do would be stall him out until he faints lol

I agree Battle frontier should've been in OR/AS. That said, Delta Episode is a lot more substantial than any of the crystal stuff that was brought over to HG/SS

Boss Doggie reply

That's an issue more with the game restrictions than the character

I 100% agree that the story should progress with Rival losses instead of forcing you to win. That should make battles even harder

Yeah, they should make the rival challenging at least.

Hell, you know what would be fun?
The rival is secretly the champion, and not the blue/green style. Like he is the champion!
You just stumble upon him, he fights you, he sees potential good fight in you, leaves, and he keeps badgering you for fights. He says he has no interest in badge collection, but wants to fight you regardless.

Wally barely qualifies as a rival in the original Ruby & Sapphire. Honestly, it's more of a "Huh? Who are you again?" moment when he appears in Victory Road because they have such little presence in terms of a relationship of any sort to the main character. I know Pokémon has featured some generally poor writing but even by their standards, Wally was completely underdeveloped. OR/AS tries to salvage him with the few extra scenes added in but it doesn't do enough to shake off how little they come across as a rival of sorts. Much as I loathe Barry and Hugh, their constant presence within their resepctive stories and multiple interactions made them far better rivals, if only for the fact that they were given a level of focus on your journey as a major player given the events of D/P/Pt and B2/W2.

Silver is still the best rival

I like that idea, then when you face them at the E4, they taunt you about how they have weak teams to be fair, but now you'll face their strongest!

It would be cool if throughout the game he has crazy diverse teams rather than evolved forms of the same team.

and the motherfucker has a Metagross and Dragonite lol

I doubt it would ever happen, but the rival should scale in level and the team should change depending on your team. That would be awesome.
