Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon - Winter 2015 - 3DS

I'm not sure if I want to play this after Etrian Mystery Dungeon and Sorcery Saga. Maybe they should switch the formula from roguelike to Diablo-like RPG.

I don't know If I'd stop playing, but it certainly wouldn't be a day 1 purchase series anymore.

I'm already at that stage with ORAS.

I bought every Mainline Game Day 1 from 2009 to 2013, now with ORAS...i have yet to buy it. might bite this summer, but i'm not sure yet.

I know how you feel. I loved Gen 5, but Gen 6 has been a total let down to me so far.

Exactly. After the awe from the heavily improved Graphics was gone, the Gen 6 Games felt very lacking (even though i have to give ORAS Chance at least)

This too. Gates to Infinity only having 5 to start as was really underwhelming.

Yeah.

I mean, there should be no excuse for me to not be able to have my BroTP of Totodile and Charmander again. Even better if I can throw the likes of Pancham and Hawlucha into the mix.

Oh yeah. Forgot to mention.

Japanese site lists 希望小売価格: 未定 "Suggested Retail Price: TBD", which indicates it's a retail title to me

they never use this for digital stuff right

they never use this for digital stuff right

Correct. Shuffle & Rumble World have the following:

価格:基本プレイ無料(アイテム課金あり)
Price: Play-to-start (With paid Items)

Conversely, Battle Trozei had
メーカー希望小売価格:760円(税抜)
Maker's Suggested Retail Price: 760Yen (Before Tax)

And the last Dungeon game had

希望小売価格:各4,571円(税抜)
Suggested Retail Price: 4,571 Yen (Before Tax)

So this means it's either a boxed retail game, or a paid download title. No free to play.

Hum, I like PMD, but as many have said, I hope it is better than Gates. I eagerly await more media on this.

It should be f2p. The gameplay is more f2p territory. Honestly ALL of the Pokemon games should be f2p and I love Pokemon.

That's insanity. Nothing should be free to play. It is horrible for the consumer and the industry in general.

I fail to see how this game fits F2P too

It's interesting, following Chunsoft's evolution of their "Mystery dungeon" engine on the 3DS, though Gates to Infinity and Etrian Mystery Dungeon. I hope the improvements they made in the latter come into play with this title.

And that they bring back all the Pokemon.

Kinda surprised we're getting Etrian Mystery Dungeon and Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon in the same year. I thought EMD meant they weren't making a new PMD.

It'd be cool if they have cross-over with the main games like some of the older Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games had where they had special legendaries or whatever that you could transfer to your main game after encountering them in Mystery Dungeon

Edit:I guess it was Pokémon Ranger that let you transfer a couple legendaries, not the Mystery Dungeon games. Oh well, it would be a cool feature to implement anyway.

Say Joe, back when the earlier PMD games were announced, were the plots of the game already given or just a generic blurb?

Just a blurb.

Except the WiiWare titles. They totally spoiled that, but that's only because the plot was that some chocolate was lost and you're sent to find it.

A game with as much content as this game should have should be f2p. What single player f2p games have you been playing?

Pokemon Shuffle and Pokemon Rumble World are perfect f2p's that I would not have played otherwise.

If this game was f2p as well I might play it.

I can see the case for mainline series not being f2p. But really Mystery Dungeon?! Make it f2p already and any other spin off series.

If it is intelligently done like the other 2 (more-so Shuffle than Rumble) then yes, a game I would not otherwise purchase in an archaic model should be f2p.

There shouldn't be such a stigma to f2p, only how it is implemented.

I'm excited!!! I just hope it's way better than Gates to Infinity, which felt like a huge step down from the Explorers games even if I did like it. :(

A match three game and a basic (albeit fun) button masher aren't really comparable to Mystery Dungeon.

YES.

Be more like Explorers of Sky (with a couple mechanics Gates to Infinity introduced) and still have a good story, please.

I guess 2 versions are no longer a thing now, huh?

Cool, let just hope that they include an option to increase the text speed unlike Gates to Infinity which has a slow text speed which put me off the game.

Also what's with Europe getting the game in 2016? I guess Pokémon X and Y getting a worldwide release was a fluke. ¬_¬;

Multiple SKUs never made much sense for Mystery Dungeon anyway. Since you could get just about everything by entering a password it was either split the content and give you less in each, or make you jump through hoops and enter passwords to get everything.

There's much better ways to encourage multiplayer.

All that I ask for is that they have the entire list of Pokemon in the game instead of making it centered around the current generation like Gates to Infinity did.
Oh, and have personality quizzes and have all starters available to pick from.
Gates to Infinity had bad choices in gameplay, but I would love if the move level-up mechanic stayed. The gameplay was one step forward and two steps back, but the story was acceptable.
That reminds me, Mega Evolution is going to be introduced. I wonder if it will be a crucial factor to the story.

I'm at least glad that they're no longer going in that direction. I'd rather not have to worry about version exclusives.
I wonder if they're going to replicate what Gates to Infinity did which was having extra dungeons via DLC.
God, I hope not.

To be fair, none of the DLC dungeons did anything unique. Just gave you easy access to hard to find items/starter Pokémon in the game.

Also technically only the second PMD had the multiple version right? The first wasn't a multiple version since the other game was an up-port. And the Wii Ware games were more like expansions?

First PMD was a multiple version thing too, just more minor. Each version had a few exclusive Pokémon which could be shared through passwords in the form of missions I think?

Yup, and most of the choices for version exclusive Pokemon were really obscure or insignificant. Splitting Red/Blue there probably had more to do with them wanting to give the DS a Pokemon game at the time.

Time and Darkness were pretty similar outside of a couple legendaries (which you could still obtain in the other version thanks to a wi-fi event that's long since passed).

I do wonder how are they going to handle dialog. No way Kyogre will talk/act scared of been alone with no friends, or Giratina wishing to the stars that his dreams will come true.

Hopefulyy, same visual style of Games of Infinity.

Yeah, I freaked out because the generic title screamed "F2P", but now I'm hyped again...

I honestly thought Gates of Infinity had some cool ideas, though the super-small amount of Pokemon (not even 150 iirc) just killed it for me. But I liked the little town building elements.

Here's hoping we've got EVERYONE in.

I never even got around to playing the 3rd one. Was it good? I liked 1 and 2.

It had issues.

Biggest flaw was a super small amount of Pokemon, and limited choices---you could only be Pikachu, Axew and the Unova Starters, iirc. There was also a ton of paid DLC.

Otherwise, there were quite a bit of new little mechanics which weren't too horrible, but I recall made the game a bit easier. And the plot was a bit weaker than before, but still had some depth
including a straight up, non-reversible death shown to the player
.

I think honestly the lack of Pokemon put a ton of players off and the game probably got bashed a bit more than it deserved. I found it solid enough, yet it didn't hold my interest like Explorers did.

Assuming you;re talking about Gates of Infinity then it's just okay. I liked it enough to beat it, but it is a mere shadow when compared to the other localized games.

If you're talking about the Wii game(s) then I have no clue. I never felt compelled to play such a text heavy series in a language I don't understand.

If this is about Gates to Infinity... (I forget that the WiiWare games exist.)
You'll find from previous responses here that it did not live up to past games.
Not all Pokemon were included in the game (no personality quiz, 5 Pokemon to pick from, most in the entire game were Unova Pokemon) and that was a serious dealbreaker for people.
Some odd gameplay quirks like being forced to do only one Job at a time instead of multitasking in one dungeon.
However, there were a couple new mechanics that I thought were pretty cool. If you use moves frequently, they can level-up on their own and raise stats like Power, PP, and Accuracy (Tackle I levels up to Tackle II after several uses, for example). All team members gain EXP, so no need to grind for your weaker Pokemon.
The plot was decent and the ending did make me have to hold my tears (not as much as Explorers of Time).

TL;DR: It went one step forward and two steps back.

While I definitely hope this ends up more like Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky than Gates to Infinity, there were definitely a few good ideas in Gates to Infinity that they should keep around. In particular, having all members of your team gain experience instead of just the currently active ones was a great idea.

Never played any of the PMD games, but Etrian Mystery Dungeon has quickly become one of my favorite 3DS games. Should I expect something as fun as that? Or is this something completely different/not comparable?

Yea I'm talking about Gates to Infinity, I just forgot the subtitle.

After reading this (and the rest of the thread) it sounds like a skip. A small selection of pokemon is the worst.

I'll still look out for news on this title though since Time/Darkness were really great.

Explorers of Time was a surprisingly good game with a shockingly great story for a Pokemon game. I avoided Gates to Infinity since I heard people say it was disappointing so I hope this one goes back to being good. I know this is unlikely, but I also hope that they go back to sprites instead of 3D graphics. I really liked the art style that the DS games had and Gates to Infinity, while okay, doesn't look nearly as good.

I'm surprised they didn't go with Pokemon Mega Mystery Dungeon. Still, looking forward to it, I just hope that I'll be able to survive till 2016.

Not necessarily.

Look at last year for the US:

October 24th: Pokémon Art Academy
November 21st: Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire.

Could be similar of Dungeon in January and then new game in February
There's a bit of a difference between an extensive dungeon crawler and a throwaway bit of art software, in fairness.
