Pokemon Uranium (Fan made game) is released!

I dont understand game journalism sites bringing attention to these things...

In Honor of Fan Spending 9 Years On Fan Game, We Show Nintendo

Pretty sure Kotaku has done worse before too, I don't remember if it was about Zeta/Omicron or Insurgence but their article was going on and on about how the fangame was better than the official games.
Both (well all three technically) are still available to this day anyway.

Is this in a new engine or is it a ROM hack? Looks a bit too advanced to be just a romhack?

Do you need a gbaemulator to play it?

If so, would it be made to work on a PSP via GBA emulator?

Pretty sure it's a fangame running on the Pokemon Essentials Kit for RPG Maker XP, so unless the PSP has some sort of RGSS Player it won't work.

Why's it so bad that Kotaku exposed it? It's probably going to get more downloads before it's taken down than it would have otherwise.

Pokemon Phoenix Rising?

...Pokemon Uranium...

Why do these have such bad names?

It makes it harder when you're in a dedicated community of people making their own Pokemon fan games. You have to avoid using other people's project's names, which can lead to some... bad names. And yeah, some people are bad at naming.

The project I was working on back in 2008 was Pokemon X.
One of the main features would be giving alternate evolutions to the starter Pokemon

Everything's been done.

The OG Megas.

Ugh, so It's probably not possible. Though I think in 2008 there was a Spanish project that ported RPGMaker2K to PSP and you could play those games, but yah that's definitely too old now.

No clue but I downloaded about 10 MB and it looks like another 60 MB is downloading after that. And going very, very slowly.

yeah im dling the second one now which is 52MB, and it seems to be going at like 100KB/s. Won't be playing this for hours lol.

Man I wish I had the skills and the ambition to pull this off, I've spent countless hours thinking of ideas for New Pokemon and would love to put them into practice.

I think people can be really harsh on "Fake Pokemon" but I like to see the various ideas fans come up with even if they sometimes miss the mark or are too "try-hard".

I had a hand in voting those starters in.

The 3rd form of the fire one was true hell until someone proposed a whole Greco-Roman helmet theme.

I'm going in blind here, not gonna look at the PokeDex...

Although, maybe I'll do a 721-style review of them haha.

That fire goat reminds me of an idea I had years ago (and I think someone made a sprite of it on Serebii), it was a Fire Starter black sheep with a biker motif---the first form when it got mad had a fire pattern appear on its wool. As it evolved it turned quadrupedal and became its horns became bike handles and such. Gogoat pretty much was the official realization of that concept but that Sage one is very close.

Insurgence while not complete is probably the best I've played so far. Phoenix Rising is really promising too.

Zeta/Omicron is worth playing because it is just fucking massive.

their artwork looks so similar to real offical artwork too. I'm looking forward to the full release of it.

just learned that phoenix rising is co op just now too, im really excited for that one, i wonder how co op works.

Why?

I honestly don't get why someone would do this.

Those Standard RPG Maker XP preset battle animations stand out like a sore thumb.

a really sore thumb.

Animations aren't too hard to find elsewhere. Obvious time was spent on making custom pokemon. So it's weird that those animations are there. hm

You honestly think that Nintendo wouldn't be aware of it unless some blogs posted about it?

The love of Pokemon.

Though I do see how if you're willing to put this much effort why not make it an "inspired by Pokemon" game so you can sell it? I'm certainly open to more Monster RPGs in my life.

I love the patcher.

GlassWire calls it the Ragnarok Online patch tool. Cheeky guys, cheeky.

Nintendo as an entity would likely be unaware of random fan project on the internet without it being on mainstream media and neogaf, yes.

If the entity, the legal division, investors, executives, become officially aware of something then a decision officially has to be made about what to do.

Workers and people at nintendo know all sorts of things im sure.

Pokehacks are great. Many years ago I did one Fire Red hack where many lines had alternate evolutions and typings. It was very silly and kinda hard.

Kotaku states that it's designed to be played on PC "using an emulator," which is bullshit. It's a stand-alone game that you download and install just like any other.

Then again, this is Kotaku we're talking about here.

One idea for a fan project I'd love to do is a "demake" of Black and White, there's a ton of mock-ups of this but never an actual attempt as far as I'm concerned.

Basically Black and White done to resemble Red and Blue, using the 156 Pokemon introduced in Unova. I also think I'd ditch Steel, Dark, and Fairy, re-typing those Pokemon with perhaps Normal (like for Pawniard) or Electric (for Klink). I'd go back to the mechanics of Red and Blue, but I'd keep some of the newer moves providing they're some of the more "basic" types of moves that don't do anything too crazy. No Abilities either. But then I'd edit the scenario a bit to mimic the more open-style of the original Red and Blue instead of how linear Unova could be during the plot.

I just think it'd be fun as a little side project even if it would be a bit "pointless" to cut down a game like that.
