Wanted to make an ongoing thread for people to share their poker stories, talk strategy, organize games, talk about the WPT and the shows on TV, etc.

I've been playing a shitload of poker lately, 4-5 days a week. The girl I've been dating for the last 10 months is a big player and she got me back into it, and lately I'm playing constantly. Thankfully I've gotten good enough where I'm winning a little more than I'm losing. Still, when I hit a bad streak it can be a stupidly expensive hobby.

I play in so many different locales...

Full Tilt
Where I started playing online and while I still like it, I'm usually on Poker Stars more these days. My favorite here is Rush Poker -- multi-table tournaments (or cash) where as soon as you fold, you're moved to a new table and a new deal immediately. Since it's dead boring watching computer avatars play out full hands in online casinos after you've folded, this keeps your attention since you're always playing a hand.

Poker Stars
Doesn't look quite as nice as Full Tilt, but they pay much faster (direct deposit) and have my favorite game of them all - Double or Nothing. It's a 10 person sit & go but the game ends when there's 5 left and those 5 double their buy-in. I usually play the $20s or the $50s. Usually good players in these, though, probably because it's one of the most sure fire ways for a decent player to make consistent money.

Atlantic City
Playing no limit cash in AC is pretty sick, you need to sit down with $200 at least and not be afraid to use most of it on good hands or you'll get pushed around badly. I much prefer playing limit in AC or tourneys/sit & gos. I haven't found the tourney competition to be that amazing, but the no limit cash games are rough. Especially at the Taj. I think that's where all the sharks go to feast on amateurs and tourists who saw Rounders and want to play in the same place in the movie. Thankfully I only got beat for $60 there last Sunday but my gf lost $400, most of it in one hand.

Eastern Poker Tour
Up here in Massachusetts there's a "charity" poker tour that travels from different bars and hotel banquet rooms every weekend. They generally have one huge tourney every Saturday where 100-200 play, plus satellites for that, and cash games and sit & gos on the side. Not the greatest players, although the top 10% are very good. I usually clean up in their cash games and bubble in the tourneys.

Mohegan Sun
WAY nicer than Foxwoods, but a smaller poker room. I like it better, though. It's more touristy so I don't think the competition is as tough, plus the atmosphere is so much nicer than Foxwoods, which is basically a big ugly room full of Marlboro Light smoke.

Foxwoods
As mentioned, it's a large and competitive poker room, but the rest of the place is a fucking dump. I like playing poker there, but everything else about it blows.

Where and what do you play? Good stories? I have a great one I'll share later when this thread needs a bump.

I used to play poker with a dedicated group every fortnight last term. Unfortunately this term 90% of them have an internship thousands of miles away..

I still play facebook poker though :lol

I started playing a bit lately,

I'm doing ok and trying to remain very disciplined. When I first got into it I pushed my 20 american up to 90$. Since then I've been sitting around the 70 mark and I've gone in for the poker tracker software, started reading a bit about it and trying to play sensible.

I only play $2NL and single table sitngos at the moment for 1.50. I could afford to put in a lot more cash as I make good money, but I want to see if I can actually move up.

I've started multitabling a tiny bit with the $2 NL tables and trying to play 2 at a time, but I managed to get my winnings +4$ doing that then lost it all on 1 hand after 1 bad play. grrrrr!

Played a 27 man live tournament the other week and at my table there were a couple calling stations, it was impossible to bluff and people were just 'having a go' so I figured if I hit good pocket pairs I was going to try my all in. Got pocket queens and went all in on the button, one of the guys that had just limped in called with double ace. Ouch.

I used my rebuy and went back in, was 100 euros in at that point, ended up getting 3rd in the tourny and coming out +75 euro. Not bad!

I want to put that in my online poker account actually, but the problem is I play at absolute poker, not out of liking it, just that's were my 10$ turned into 90, so I cant give up!

A great idea, everyone should start at small $5 and under tourneys and sit & gos online for their first month or so. Learning how to play decent poker doesn't take too long, but learning how to bet well is a continual learning experience. Thousands of hours of poker later and I'm still an amateurish and predictable better.

Is that tracking software worth it? I was just reading about one of those programs an hour ago.

I've played online for about 7 years but really enjoy playing live here in Reno. Did pretty well playing 1/2 and 3/5 but had to use most of my BR for life expenses. Now I'm just trying to build it up but it's difficult with a newborn and two other kids. I will get back to it because I enjoy it and I'm above average but it might take a while. The key for me is to have a large BR and play within it. It makes all your decisions much easier and clearer.

Yay poker!

So when's the next big GAF tourney? :P

I started playing Fulltilt around last September. Lost my initial roll of 20 bucks in two months. I just started playing again recently starting with 5 bucks at 1/2 cent stakes. I'm a lot less tilty now (well, at least I hope so) and am so far a winning player...although at these stakes, admittedly, that's not saying much.

I'd play more frequently if gambling was legal here in Alaska :(

Haven't thrown any real money down online yet either but I might if I get some free cash in a few months.

poker tracker 3

is what I use.

It's very good. you can review whole games, see which hand and to who you lost money on, your play vs every single person, you can even view the hands again played out in real time or step by step and have the odds shown at start of hand to see how the person was betting against you.

It also has a hud that goes over the poker software and measures things like your opponents aggression factor, how often they put money in the pot voluntarily etc.

is the tracker software mentioned above the one found at pokertracker.com?

yep. 60 day free trial.

Been playing online for 5 years or so, play in bursts for months at a time until I have made a decent profit then cash out, spend it on something tangible and then give it a rest until a new deposit bonus / sign up incentive comes along and I'm in the mood again. Play $10 / $20 / $50 10 man STT's or limit hold 'em cash games (no limit cash games freak me out and I don't have the mentality to succeed in these).

I'd recommend reading a few books, have read a lot by David Sklansky and 2+2 publishing does books on pretty much every level and every poker variant going. Their forum is close to the neogaf of poker http://www.twoplustwo.com/ - hardcore but good to get your head around.

When starting out I would suggest specialising: I started on limit cash games and went on to STT play and I studiously avoid temptation to broaden. Everything has an impact on how you should play and I would rec going deep on one type of game to begin with. Likewise find a website and time of day where you are comfortable with the UI, skill level, etc etc and stick with it. You want to be completely comfortable with every aspect of the experience so you can focus completely on playing well. Obviously you want to find a place to play where you are consistently profitable, this is a mix of playing the right game against the right people at the right limits for your ability. I recall having good runs on UK facing websites after chucking out time at the pub on Fri / Sat nights when there would be a good stock of drunk people who didn't know how to play v well.

I am a bit skeptical of playing STT's for less than $10 (definitely not less than $5) or limit cash games where blind is less than ÂŁ2 as you get a lot of generally slack play because people don't care about losing. At higher limits you tend to get a higher percentage of good players who will improve your poker and discourage bad habits on your part. My rule of thumb for STT's is for $10 there will be 2-4 good players, $20 at least half the table, $50 damn you better be on song :)

Also unless you are a total experienced super poker don don't multitable, esp not at lower limits. Its very difficult to learn and analyse situations this way and is a great way of picking up bad habits. I would suggest playing one table at a higher limit and concentrating more instead of two for 0.5 * whatever this is for you.

Also, if you drink or get stoned while playing you probably won't make a lot of money :) Sure it might be fun but treat it like playing a slot machine instead of playing for profit if this is what you want to do :) If you are playing for profit, get serious and focus. Some of the best fun I've had online, come across some really cool people while playing so good luck, enjoy and make lots of money!

Went to a casino a couple months ago for the first time. Enjoyed playing craps the most. Was up 80 at one point but ended up losing 50 alltogether. I played some Texas hold em last night for the first time in 3 years and somehow ended up winning! $40! Not bad

interesting.

I made my loss doing this actually. I only play low $ at the moment while trying to improve as well. I'm sort of trying to fight the temptation to play higher limits, but I find at .01/.02 tables people will chuck all in with nothing. It's annoying.

I've been playing a lot of micro (2 - 4 dollar entry) tourney's (1000-2000 ppl) on Pokerstars. I've cracked the top 20 a few times, but haven't got the final table yet.

Currently I'm playing a micro where there are 100 left from 1000. I have a little less than chip average. I'll update how I finish.

I went to the casino for the first time back in February and did pretty well for myself considering i dont play much. Started with 100 left the 2 hours later at about 195. Peaked around 300. I got a really cold deck at the end there. was playing 1/2 nl. Pretty funny considering my dad and uncle who play all the time were both -150 for the day

Turned $100 into $2000 on pokerstars in the past year. Probably played like 500 hours so its not exactly a good money earner. Kills the time when i'm bored though.

Good timing for this thread to show up again. ESPN is starting their TV coverage of this years WSOP event. So basically between now and November every Tuesday there should be 2 hours of poker on TV.

I so like the Double or Nothing game on PokerStars, especially the turbo version. As I mentioned in the OP, it's a 10 person sit & go, game ends when 5 are left and they all double their money. Saw this thread pop up earlier, it inspired me to play and I won 2 of 3 $20 games. I have unrealistic dreams of moving up to the $100 games and being able to make $200 a day off of it and not working a real job. :D

Well I downloaded PokerStars tonight to give it a go (winning the Lambo would be sweet :lol ) but damn the software feels so clunky compared to FTP. Maybe it will grow on me because I've been using FTP for so long.

I play aggressively, quickly, and stupidly.
I had an ex who was one of those weird "lucky" people who could do anything perfectly and wins at everything. I would take her to poker night with friends and we'd make 40 bucks off of quarters and dimes. Best part was she had no idea how to play poker, she just played along and would clean everyone out.
Always meant to take her to vegas before we broke up.

Been playing on Carbon Poker the last couple of days. Played in a $5 (+.50 rake) buyin bounty tourney earlier with 68 players.. wound up coming in 2nd and cashed out for $37.50 + ten $2.00 bounties. I actually really love bounty tourneys as they give you a pretty damn good chance to at least make your buyin back, even if you run unlucky.

Been playing quite a bit over the last week.

Fuck the river, seriously. For ever single river I win, I lose like 10 :lol Earlier tonight I lost a hand that would have won me double my entry but instead the 1 outter came on the river. I just know they are coming it happens that often. I prefer playing on the "shallow" stack tables on FTP because then when a giant dickwad joins, they can only push in so much (and people normally catch on pretty quick and catch the idiots pushing with 3 9 off or something like that).

I'm still trying to make it through to round 2 of the lambo freerolls. Best I've come is 31st from 10,000 so far... quite close to top 18 but not quite. I've also finished exactly 1,000th and 1,500th, lol.

Just had my biggest tournament win ever. 2nd place in a 135 person tournament on Full Tilt. $11 buy in, so I won $270. Wheeeeee. :D

I play every week at a pub and every other week with friends. I played on Full Tilt for a while, earned a few dollars then gave up and cashed in because the style of poker was so boring. I stick to XBLA Texas Hold 'Em now, it's fun, I stick to the $4k tournaments as you have to build a bit of a bankroll so people don't play ridiculously, but neither do they play super tight. Last I checked I'd played more than 11,000 hands in that game... still no god damn royal flush, that's my last achievement to get >_<

I'm seriously this close to never playing online poker ever again. I've been up and down with my initial seed money (only $60, the cost of 1 new video game) but this past week has just been the worst. I'm having to play tighter and tighter, only calling with the absolute nuts due to dumb shits calling with horrible hands, only to hit 2 outers on the river. Been trying to earn it back playing Rush Poker and while I'm earning some back then it only takes one bad session until I'm back where I started or lower.

I'm not the best poker player in the world and enjoy it for the most part, but after getting up to over $100 off my initial money, back down to 40 and then up to 90 again I've fallen the lowest I've ever been just over this week, losing to idiots going all in with shit like 47 unsuited against pocket kings only to hit a straight.

I guess I just need to get up, walk away for a bit and come back and try to just get back "even". That or switch my game to something like PLO (seems like someone who enjoys odds like I do would be good at...) I've gotten plenty of play time out of my $60 (more than a typical $60 game) so even if I go broke it isn't the worst thing in the world. Also I might just start playing in person as a friend has a 9 seater going usually once a week. Sorry for venting but it was either stay on and lose more money or come here and complain :lol

Poker story:

I started playing online poker (texas hold em) when I was 16. Pokerroom.com, to be specific, because it didn't require you to download any software. Well long story short I was a very up and down player. I'd go weeks losing everyday. Same routine, deposit $50, lose it in an hour, wash rinse repeat. Every now and then I'd hit a luck streak and turn my $50 deposit into good money. $200, $500, $1000 cashouts. It wasn't often, and I certainly never made a net profit from my gambling days, but the feeling of banking $1000 in one day was incredible. No high compares to it.

So anyway, one day at college I only had 1 early class, and afterwards I go to the computer lap to play some poker. I start with my $50, and gentlemen, today luck was on my side. I start with my $50 at the .25/.50 limit table, win some hands and go up to about $120. Move up a level to .50/1. Win some more and before long I'm playing $1/$2, $2/$4, $5/10, and finally $25/$50 Limit. First hand at this limit I get pocket Jacks, and just before my heart jumps out of my chest I bank a $700 pot I now I'm scooping pots like a fucking shark. I'm winning and losing $1000 pots like it's nothing. I'm over $2000, I'm over $3000, I'm over $5000 fucking dollars. And at 11'oclock the computer lab attendants say to shut down, the labs are closing. No problem I say, I'll come back tomorrow and cash out my enormous winnings. Know where this story is going yet?

I come back the next day, and I'm sitting there looking at $5000 in my account. Now I could cash out and go back to .25/.50 tables, I think, OR, I could keep playing the $25/$50 and win even more! Well needless to say, as good as my luck was the day before, it was equally bad this day. In less then 2 hours the entire wad gone. Vanished. $5000. And I walk away. Thinking what could have been. The strange thing is though, I really don't care. I've told this story a thousand times and everytime people say "Man, you must be pissed!" Nah, I'm not. It was a fun time. It's all in the past.

tl;dr:

I start with $50, in the course of 12 hours turn it into $5000, and in 2 hours after that lose everything.

BTW, I don't play poker nearly as mush nowadays, just so you know.

Edit: just realized this was bumped by the guy above me and I had already posted here. :lol

I usually just play with my uncles and their friends, which is good, because if I took my show to the casino I would lose. I can see myself blowing away a check or two.

I know some very disciplined players that will absolutely stick to analyzing their stats and completely avoid titling off or playing beyond their bankroll.

I've also known a lot of players that forget they're playing with real money. They go crazy spending their winnings and then turn around begging for transfers when they're 'down on their luck.' The amount of money that can get tossed around is pretty crazy for a bunch of young kids.

I'm back on down in a dry spell. For a few weeks I cashed on 11 straight tables (1000+ people tourneys), never making it to the final table, but always tripling or quadrupling my buy in.

Haven't smelled a cash in a week now. :(

Was up quite a bit today, then lost it all when my KK was cracked by QQ on the turn :| Made it back to even for the day at least. Poker Rush is good for getting my cash back due to idiots pushing with stuff like J7 off and not expecting people to call with stuff like QQ/KK/AA :lol

Also played some low limit PLO, wish there were more PLO mutlitable games/tournaments because I really like it. Also wish FTP had more tournaments later in the day for West Coast people :|

I've been playing casually for a while now with friends and in freeroll tournaments online, PokerStars exclusively. I'm a college student so I never wanted to get involved with putting a bunch of money down online, as much of my game is based on reading people and following their betting trends, which I don't have then patience to do unless it's in person.

None of the games I play with my buddies are for more than 10 or 15 bucks, but we did go and play in some tournaments at frat houses for 25$, one of which I won and another my roommate won.

Early this summer my friends at home finally convinced me to come to AC with them to play, and since I only had experience playing No-Limit Hold Em, that's what I did. Ended up 280$ up and haven't gone back :lol

Here's a hand I was dealt earlier today...

1. Get dealt rockets in the Big Blind. Two people limp, I elect to slow play them 'cause I'm the big stack at the table.
2. We go to the flop, two clubs and a spade hit. No paint. I continue to slow play calling a 3-time BB bet from one of the limpers. Other limper folds.
3. On the turn comes a 3rd club. Well, one of my Aces is a club. So I've got a nut flush draw to go with my top pair. We both check.
4. 4th club comes on the river. Limper bets into me, I re-raise, he goes all-in, I call.

My nut flush (starting out with rockets) gets cracked by a straight flush 6-to-10. Fun times! :lol

I live five minutes from Mount Airy Casino and twenty five minutes from Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, so I gamble... a lot.

And they just opened manned table games, now, including Poker... and I love fucking Poker and Blackjack.

I am doomed. DOOOOOOOOOOMED

also I am terrible at gambling and always lose money :lol

I wish I knew how to play poker well, I know the basics but thats about it.

How long does it take to be halfway decent at it?

To be halfway decent? I taught someone well enough to be profitable in my home game and cash in a few $60 casino tournaments in about an hour. A few weeks later and he's a profitable 1/2 NL player at the casinos.

To be REALLY good? Um, wouldn't know ...

Goddamn. We all have "slow playing my aces fucked me" stories, but that one's particularly brutal. It's stuff like this why I prefer tourneys and sit & gos more than cash games. That hand would've cost me a fortune.

A few long sessions should be good enough for you to master card reading -- knowing the hands quickly, seeing straight possibilities automatically, knowing what the nuts, 2nd nuts, 3rd nuts, etc. are automatically.

After that, it really depends on who you're playing against. You want to play against people who are better than you, or else you'll never improve, but not so much better that you have no idea what they are doing. Listen to the table talk and stay humble. People will offer all kinds of advice while you are playing. Take it all in--whether it's advice you want to follow or not, they are telling you how they think.

Keep your own opinions to yourself for now, at least until you figure out how to use table talk to set up an image, and then use that image to confuse people. Figure out your own tendencies, listen to what people say about you or how they look at you when you show your hands, and then use that to set up a particular image. (Live games only of course; if online, forget about your own image and just watch betting patterns.)

After many many more hours you'll start to see patterns and "types" of players, but don't get too confident about this, because the game is always changing.

Just bought a poker set this week, weird! Invited some Mates round tonight for a poker night, though there was a couple people who hadn't played before, so we weren't playing for money or anything.

New guy proceeds to love playing, loses all his chips in <20 minutes and at the end of the night starts saying how much he wants to play again midweek sometime, but with money involved.

I wish I knew how to play poker well, I know the basics but thats about it.

How long does it take to be halfway decent at it?
Reading a few books and a couple long sessions should be enough if you're disciplined enough. The main thing to remember early on is that you will need to play differently depending on if you're in a cash game or tournament.

If you plan on playing mainly tourneys, Harrington's books are pretty much a must read. If mainly cash limit games, check out Ed Miller's book on small stakes hold em.

My best experience playing online poker was with "Absolute Poker"

I joined one of the freeroll tournaments. (play money) 1000 person limit

So yea, a couple hours later and i ended up getting first place. Too bad the only thing i won was a like a million play chips though.

But yea i was trippin for a couple days because i actually won a 1000 person NL poker tournament online.

Got to give a shout out to the original thread starter for the Double or Nothing Sit-and-Go tip. Took a few cracks at these last weekend to settle into a conservative strategy that worked well for me. I've managed to settle into a zone where I make the Top 5 quite consistently. And I've found that the techniques I've been using are translating into better tournament play as well.

Currently on a streak of 8 consecutive cashes between 6 Double or Nothings, one 24th-place finish in a 500-person capped MTT and one Double Shootout satellite win to the Sunday Million. I effectively turned $5 into a bankroll of $294 in just over 24 hours built on a foundation of Double or Nothing play. Going to stick with the $20 tables until I lose one. Many thanks!
