PoliGAF After Party Thread of Harsh Realities

First Read's take:

Two Obama advisers have told NBC News that Hillary Clinton is under consideration to be secretary of state. Would she be interested? Those who know Clinton say possibly. But her office says that any decisions about the transition are up to the president-elect and his team.

Clinton was seen taking a flight to Chicago today, but an adviser says it was on personal business. It is unknown whether she had any meeting or conversation with Obama while there.

Other Democrats known to want the State Department post are Sen. John Kerry and Gov. Bill Richardson. A possible compromise choice would be former Sen. Tom Daschle.

How did I miss that?

Hillary as Sec of State? Thought Kerry was hinted at? Or was that Sec of Defense?

In magazine news, my school stupidly decided that, since it gets Time and Newsweek a week late, to stop carrying BOTH magazines as of last week, aka no issue with the election stuff from Newsweek for me.

They want the money now, because Obama wants to tie any funding to part of a comprehensive set of fuel efficiency standards. GM just wants the cash, no strings attached. I hope they don't get jack shit until after Jan 20th when it's part of a larger energy policy.

Now that's very very smart. Damn I hope they don't get the money now. Get it after Obama is in office.

Hillary would be great as Sec of State. Wow.
You really think so? I think she's be a big distraction for the administration.

So I'm a bit torn on it.

Remember "no drama Obama"? You really want Hillary tossed into that administration? It would be all drama, all the time.

Last thing Obama needs is someone who is so power hungry in his cabinet.

Hillary would be a HORRIBLE choice.
Good point.

But I can hardly hear it over the awesomeness if this were to become true. I always secretly hoped Obama and Clinton would team up. Totally cathartic.

I'm torn too. But honestly I don't think she would be that bad. She does know alot of world expirence. And she does have a reason to be a good SoS.

Not that it matters much, but about 5K votes of 2.9 mil is like 0.0017 of that. But still, if 5,000 votes are made up and recounted, that seems like a lot in an election. I guess if you take every place in a state, the major cities and then smallers ones, it would only turn out to be a couple wrong votes here or there in each election place, but that adds up. I don't see why these things sometimes to turn out to be so inaccurate and upon recount could change the election significantly. The Minnesota and Arkansas senate races are much more meaningful and even tighter with recounts.

PS - On a side note, Obama should give Nader a position in office, I would like to see some high profile indepedents get a shot. :D

How important do you think it is for Obama to select several (2 or more) Republicans for his cabinet? Won't there be a backlash if he doesn't?

No there will not be although he has already said he will. Jeez I thought you were just an election Chicken Little but 4 years of this will be nearly intolerable.

I'm not liking the sound of Hillary for SoS. That seems a sure way to scare away a lot of moderates he's won over. And it could only lead to drama. Though I guess the other countries she's dealing with would probably love her.

The two-party system is a big tent system, and still emphasizes compromise more than division (compared to third parties) so moderates of each party still can work with the far-right/left of their parties, and parties often "cross-the-aisle"; "independents" in the American system tend to be the uncompromising ideologues that don't work well with others.

Well, not taking popularity into account, the woman is a good politician, with lots of experience. She'd do well as Sos. The only problem I could see rising up, is that she'd steal thunder from Obama, and break cohesion in the administration as a result.

Also: Obama has the image of "connecting" and "unifying" people. Bringing his ex-rival and/or several republicans/independents in his administration would be perfectly in line with that.

Hilary Clinton in an Obama administration? I don't know, the two were not exactly on friendly terms, but if signs on, it would leverage all kinds of political power, the Democratic party will be at the complete beck and call of the almighty partnership of Obama and Clinton. Not that he needs it, he's already amassed a ton of political capital and good will.

Maybe, but Nader is a left wing guy, I doubt he would accept any position with Obama though.

I mean this in the nicest possible way since Nader did a lot of good stuff in the past but at this point I wish he would retire or go off and die a quiet dignified death somewhere at this point because he hasn't been having a positive effect for awhile now.

I understand that Kerry has impeccable credentials for this position, but just looking at him gives me a headache. I hear that voice... ewww.

They need to keep John Kerry away from any position where he has to directly interface with the public alot like Sec of State. He will either bore everybody to sleep or say an inappropriate joke.

If it isn't abundantly obvious I'm not a fan of John Kerry. (Taking away nothing from his good deeds in Vietnam and Post Vietnam)

Q: (serious question) Why is Hillary more power hungry than other politicians? Every politician wants to gain power to execute his/her plans and ideas. If Hillary was a political failure, nobody would've noticed her or called her a "power hungry" woman. But she is successful, and ran a close, long and bitter campaign against Obama. Keep the exact same situation and context, but replace Hillary with another person. We'll, that other person would suddenly also be considered "power hungry".

The only argument that I've heard that supports the theory, is that she supposedly stayed with Bill for political gains.

Because once a meme is established the media drives it home until it is the only message that the people can understand.

It's the same reason that McCain was a Maverick or that any other politician has their reputation. You take an aspect of a personality and make it the only aspect to caricature people.

I know Hillary survived evasive maneuvers and sniper fire in Bosnia, but she doesn't seem to me to be a go-to expert on foreign policy, nor a chief diplomat.

Kerry & Richardson would be better choices if only for the fact that Sec. of State is pretty high up in the line of succession, and I fear for Obama's life if he is in Hillary's crosshairs.

Are you implying that Hillary would put a hit out on Obama?

And Biden, Pelosi, and whoever replaces Byrd?

:lol

When a man becomes successful, it is because of ambition and skill.

When a woman does it, she is power hungry.

Hate to play the sexism card, but I really think people aren't being fair to Hillary with the whole "power hungry" image. As you said, everyone is power hungry, especially politicians.

Because she killed Vince Foster

Obama needs to clean house*. WTF is with all the leaks? I know he ran on a platform of transparency, but still

*or the press needs to stop believing in bogus sources

I agree it is sexism.

I have a feeling these "leaks" are similar to Obama's VP text message announcement period. The media went crazy for every little detail that could latch onto, lol

If Clinton is selected (I wouldn't bet on it) it'll be fun watching the same republicans who courted her during the election attempt to slam her.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are intentionally leaking this stuff to see if any of these appointment will negatively affect the good-will he currently enjoys.
