Hearing President's conference, why do I feel that Republicans are holding this country back from its full potential?

Because you drank the Kool-aid? To blame one side for all the faults is too easy.

Simple. Live in California. I still live with my father with my siblings, so we have 3 people in the family working. We support two people that aren't working. One that's in college, the other that's a lazy bum living in the garage who hasn't worked for 25 years.

As a total, we probably make about 200K a year. But at the end of the day, we get to put very little of that into savings. It costs a fortune to live in California, especially with the recent tax raises.

I really should have moved out years ago though.
Imagine how tough it would be if you lived in the median California household, which according to state statistics had $56,344 in income in 2009. From here: http://www.dof.ca.gov/HTML/FS_DATA/LatestEconData/FS_Income.htm

Keep in mind these people aren't at the bottom. Half of the state makes less per household.

The GOP thinks it's 1953 with some of the laws and ideas it holds as the most important.

They haven't had an innotive idea to bring America socially forward since...
err...

Lincoln?

Is it safe to say the Rally to restore Sanity had zero effect on anything?
It was built around premise that and civility (internet memes) is more important than policy.
What effect did you think it will have?

What is you definition of "middle"? Median household income in the US is $50,000. That "middle class" household would make nearly three times the national average.

It's tricky. It's hard for me to justify crying poor for people (individually) bringing home about 900 bucks a week, but it's not enough for me to consider them wealthy or rich. Especially if they are in a profession where it took them 10-20 years to get to that point and their earnings potential is capped (unless renegotiated).

I guess it just points to the difficulties of negotiating our progressive tax system in a country as diverse as America.

I thought it was fair. He said elections have consequences after he won, so what are the consequences now?
The question was loaded. It presumed that Obama was never willing to compromise on anything. He went on from there, forgetting everything about a wall of Republicans in congress.

I don't believe private citizens can pass legislation.
Ok?

Oh... "hur hur Bams is gonna lose"?

Yeah, quite possibly. Or the Dems might not retake the House. Or they might lose the Senate. In any event, the best possible case for DADT repeal is now 2013.

2013. At best.

IIRC, Obama has been waiting for some sort of military review to complete before moving forward. If that comes out and says that there's no significant risk, Repubs will have a tough time arguing that it's dangerous.

When have Republicans let facts stand in the way of ideology?

Sorry that's incorrect. The upper class has been doing a great job convincing everyone that they're middle class when they're really not.

My wife works at a restaurant and makes over 25k a year--so if she were with another restaurant worker they'd make 50k+.

And think it's absurd all you want, that's what it is. Granted, the definition of "Middle" class has always been tenuous and there's a range of classifications in it, but the "upper-middle" class absolutely is in the top 10% to 5% for income in the nation, unless you'd like to imagine that the top 10% are all CEOs of Fortune 500 companies.

The "Upper" class is almost exclusively owners (of companies, real estate, large investments, etc.) and top-tier managers making a hell of a lot more than $140k a year.

That's what I consider my family. Upper-middle class, since we can put a little money away.

So sad right now. Republicans have managed to beat this man down and the country is paying the price. How awesome would i have been if they had worked to together from the start and lead us to a new era of true bipartisanship in our biggest time of need.

Conservatives are basically cheering for things to get worse so they can get back in power and liberals are going to be so resentful after the election that nothing will get done.

No, it presumed that there were some policy principles Obama was firm on. The question was about if any of the issues he WASN'T willing to compromise on were now on the table. I mean, you don't think Obama was willing to compromise on EVERY issue and EVERY policy point, do you?

gnoobIGN - He said it's now in China.

So all the close US House seats in IL went to the Republicans and Kirk beat Alexi by dominating his old district.

And yet the republicans only won a couple of state house seats (the dems will control redistricting) and Quinn squeaked a victory out with a massive ground game in Chicago and some incredibly effective ads targeting Brady's far-right social views. Overall the dems held strong here. Indiana on the other hand...

Ahh, yes. I turned on the office TV just in time to see the supercomputer comment. That was rich. The Chinese built one new system that has temporarily surpassed ORNL's Jaguar, wow! The Republicans must be holding us back!

Although, wait, it's a DoD/DoE project at Oak Ridge. Conservatives support that defense shit; one of it's mission goals is to simulate subcritical reactions! And just how much are the Chinese dominating the top500?

Bush tax cuts just got extended

Is this because you believe that Obama is more likely to agree to extending all the tax cuts while republicans would be willing to give it all up -- at the cost of middle class america -- unless they got everything their way?

Well, considering half the country don't pay taxes, I'd say the median household is probably lower class.

And I live in Orange County, where house prices are 500K minimum still. It's the mortgage that gets 'ya. And property tax.

I think Obama laying out his strong need to not raise taxes on the middle class forces him to compromise.

There's barely any bipartisanship even when no party has control. And, yet, you really had thought there was going to be when one party controls everything?

DADT won't be going anywhere until after Obama is elected again. That much should have been obvious to me and everyone else on PoliGAF from the start.
