PoliGAF Interim Thread of 2008 Early Voting (THE FINAL COUNTDOWN: T MINUS 2 DAYS)

Pro-tip: Fox News is not it.

e: oh I hope they try to push this as they only have two weeks and no one gives a shit about this. You also failed to provide the whole context.

Well, I early voted last week and just made a campaign contribution to Obama for the final push so I guess I've done my part, as meager as it may have been. Next time around, maybe I'll be more active. There are some scary people in Tennessee, though (and I'm an introvert). While walking back from voting one of the people who lives down the street from us yelled "you people make me sick" among other things. I guess my friend was talking a little too loudly about Bush. We couldn't see the guy and it took a second for it to register that he was yelling at us. I just kind of laughed and kept walking.

What's the reason that states in the general election are winner-take-all again? (Except the vain "it's tradition!" argument, of course)

It's no wonder people in many of the "safe" states feel disenfranchised, candidates are always focusing on the battleground states only. How frustrating must it be to be a Democrat in Texas, or a Republican in New York. :/

I thought the reason was to not "disenfranchise" the small states and give them a little more weight in the selection process. Which is stupid, because if the vote was 50,000,001 to 50,000,000 the winning vote very well could have been placed in Idaho.

I don't have that problem and I don't watch Fox, but I've begun dialing back my media intake because the anger/stress has been causing me to sleep like crap. I even had a couple dreams where I was getting stuck in a loop spending an hour debunking some stupid ass statement over and over. Not healthy. Consumption dialed way back.

Yeah wtf is up with Obama's surrogates...are they trying to throw the election? Now this week Murtha's out there calling Western Penn'ers rednecks after calling them racist last week.

Morning Joe you mean. Is there nothing you people won't worry about?

Did you read my post above? It started on Race for the Whitehouse. It will be all over Hardball and McCain will make this an issue for the next 5 days and the media is an echo chamber so they'll keep repeating it. What I'm saying is it was stupid comment that allows McCain to control the news cycle. Does it mean its over for Obama? Of course not :lol Biden should just stick to the talking points.

Ah...Look. This story will be driving the day, no two ways about it. It won't just be Morning Joe, as was "revealed" on Morning Joe itself. (You should watch it! It's great!)

It was a dumb thing to say. It can't be spun. Biden said directly and in context that because Barack Obama is young, he will be Foreign Policy Hazed by some overseas nutjob just to see if he flinches.

There is no way to spin it, no context anyone is missing. It was a dumb thing to say. It cost Obama one day out of the 14 left. But on the flip side, the numbers haven't cratered or anything, the electoral rays of hope for McCain are fading, and fading fast.

But don't try and cover for this statement. It was dumb.

Herpes flares can definitely occur from stress. I noticed this when I googled stress and frequent urination at night. If your stress level is high, your blood becomes more acidic and this can cause you to pee a lot. One of the first hits about stress/acidic blood, also mentioned it can cause herpes outbreaks to occur.

So I've basically instigated a news blackout from 9PM on.

Okay, they're not going to be talking about this for five fucking days. Read my post, I agree with you, but Jesus fucking Christ. Five days? No fucking way.

In the past week, I've had election returns dreams right before waking-up. The first one had us winning Wisconsin by about 10% (50-40) and in a tie in North Carolina (49-49). The second dream (on Sunday afternoon) had us losing Minnesota by about 10%.

Both times, I woke-up feeling incredibly stressed and with a horrible crick in my neck.

November 4th can't come soon enough. I will literally sleep more peacefully.

-----------

And Biden's comments won't be on the tube for five days. Obama is going to leave for Hawaii in two days.. it's going to change the storyline, rightly or wrongly.

I know it's hard to believe given recent history, but people actually used to aspire to be like the president.

Just happened to stumble upon Taxi to the Dark Side last night and man...we fucked up. I don't think the average american can truly truly understand how badly the Bush administration has fucked this country in the last 8 years.

Bams is going to have a SHIT ton of work ahead of him.

Oh any vague statement that can be spun is "dumb", I agree. The problem here is that this isn't a statement that can be condensed and used as a clip in order to draw out the implications. It's something pundits have to explain and as such it's not really worth the time invested. Super-low information voters are the ones currently undecided so it's unlikely to have any traction. Thus, even if it somehow drives the conversation today, it's a day lost for Mccain, not Obama.

And it won't.

e: I do often watch Morning Joe, but Scarborough is unbearable whenever he reverts to his talking point mode.

Well, he's done so this morning. He's clutching-onto those Biden comments as though they're a life preserver for his electoral hopes.

At least Todd was entertaining. He made some predictions and Obama ended-up with 313EVs. He wasn't willing to give Ohio to Obama, though.

No kidding. Joe, even if you think it's true, jesus man, parse what you're saying man.

It's the kind of thing a right wing nutjob would say to drum up the fear response. Except this came from the mouth of Obama's right hand man.

If Obama loses this election, it will be because of everyone else around him. Biden just needs to shut up. Keep his trap closed for 14 days and just stick to the talking points. Because he ran his mouth, he just knocked out some of the time the Powell endorsement brought.

I'm also not too big of a fan of this assumption that Obama has this in the bag. This is the year of the upset, so anything can happen. Let's celebrate when he actually wins this thing. I hope people aren't assuming that everyone else will vote and decide that their vote is meaningless. That kind of complacency will bring a loss to Obama.

Good thing that he still has that 30 minute speech or whatever you want to call it lined up.

I don't even know what Biden means by that comment.

P.S. VP quote won't affect anything. Stop being chicken littles.

Yes. I've had some of those. Dreams where you wake up, immediately see there was zero logic in what was happening, and are ticked you just spent the last 30 minutes cycling through it.

I'm unwilling to go black until the election, so I can't wait till the election for that reason alone. Wednesday night I'm gonna sleep like a baby (win or lose.)

Back to Biden, even if there's context that makes sense, it was an awful statement to make. Ask John Kerry how well context and explanations go.

It sounds like to me that he's saying some country is going to try some shit to see if Barack has any spine.

Not sure why some other country would be so daft as to challenge America, just to see if their new guy is cool or not. Doesn't sound like it makes too much sense to me.

Politico's Playbook doesn't even mention Biden, let alone the comment. Seriously there is no way this it get much play

It does say this though:

SIREN -- Team McCain tells us that their path to 270 runs through Pennsylvania, rated by Real Clear Politics as “Solid” blue, with an 11.7-point average polling advantage for Senator Obama. The smartest Democrat we know e-mails: “I get the appeal of trying to win one state (Pa.) rather than having to run the table on a lot of little ones (Nevada, Colorado, Iowa …), but this is the equivalent of Kerry deciding it would be easier to just stage a comeback in Texas.”

Okay I reached a little with my frustration. But 14 days left you just don't give away a day to your opponent. I swear the democrats can't walk from point a to point b sometimes without finding c, d, e, and f along the way. Democrats PLEASE stick to the talking points! America agrees with you!

The timing of the infomercial is golden. It dramatically cuts into McCain's time remaining.

Media coverage next week will go as follows...
Tuesday: what will Obama say in his infomercial? Let's speculate!
Wednesday: Infomercial tonight!... The Infomercial... Reaction to Infomercial.
Thursday: post-infomercial spinning...
Friday: coverage of final rallies and candidate campaign schedules
Saturday: coverage of final rallies and candidate campaign schedules
Sunday: pundits make their final predictions
Monday: final rallies and focus on ground game
Tuesday: time's up!

So McCain has through Tuesday to get something going. Not much time.

The Biden comment was dumb but its not a point that's going to sway anyone that wasn't subconsciously looking to vote McCain anyway.

This. Biden's comment isn't going to affect anyone's vote, and anything offensive he says is nothing compared to the inane nonsense that flies out of Palin's mouth every day. He just needs to keep doing his thing and shopping at Home Depot for the next two weeks and we will be fine.

If he loses FL, OH, and PA, he loses the election. If he loses PA, he's not winning VA either.
GA + NV = WIN

GA seems isolated enough from everything still in contention that it shouldn't be assumed one way or the other.

I don't know what resources Obama is putting in PA, but he really should do his best to shore up defenses there and make sure McCain doesn't win there, because McCain NEEDS to win there. Defend PA while maintaining what you have, and you're on a good path to victory. No point in tussling with tossup states in which you really don't know where they'll go if it will be nullified by losing one of your own fortresses. Put just as much, if not more focus as McCain is putting in PA to ensure he wastes what's left of his resources there.

Sure. It's not going to sway anything. I was just enjoying watching McCain's wags have absolutely nothing to say and no leg to stand on. Now they have something legitimate to talk about. Lame.

You can't get herpes from stress. However, if HSV-1 is dormant in your cells you can get cold sore outbreaks caused by stress. HSV-1 is contagious by contact. You can even give genital HSV-1 to someone with oral sex. HSV-2 is most common genital STD of Herpes.

However, people often confuse cold sores with canker sores(ulcers). Which isn't contagious and can be caused by stress.

So yeah decide if you have HSV-1 and if so don't get around a g/f or b/f...

Obama has more than enough money and resources to outmatch McCain in Pennsylvania, and then beat the hell out of him in every other purple state, and then a few red states.

More importantly, I'm looking forward to seeing where Obama spends the last few days of the campaign. My top states would be PA, VA, NC, CO, FL, MO, and MN.

Yeah even though Obama's campaign has been run better than Gore or Kerry it's still not good as the Bush machine was in the past. The ability of the Bush machine to deciminate word for word talking points through pundits ("truth" by repetition) and stay on message was unparalled. Obama is kind of lucky that McCain's campaign has been all over the place.

Uh, just exactly who *would* be able to adhere to your exacting standards of walking a single straight line every single day in a campaign that lasts more than a year?

Canker sores? Got a picture of what they look like? When I think of canker sores, I think of the ones inside of your mouth. The ones I get are on my lips.

EDIT-GROOOOOOOOOOOOOOSS. I'm getting conflicting reports from the googled pics I see. A lot are on the inside of the mouth. :lol

EDIT-This is what I get:

Mark Halperin says all the network morning shows led with the Biden comments so it has leaked into the mainstream media. Not just Morning Joe/Fox News.

The good thing about the Biden comment is that it may keep McCain from talking about issues that matter -- which is the economy and the war in Iraq. If McCain lays into this point too hard, he'll look like the desperate guy who doesn't care about solving America's problems, but would rather attack his opponent. It came off bad in the debates, and it'll come off bad if he pursues Barack with too many attacks. Barack should stick with the 'this is the future, this is how I will solve the economic crisis, this is how I will solve the war in Iraq,' talk. Let McCain focus on that negativity. Biden has said much worse about Obama in the past. Obama just has to let this one sail past him, keep Biden and some of his surrogates on a leash, and stay on message. That 30 minute speech couldn't come at a better time. If he could get the Clintons, Powell and some other big names there, it would be a huge closer.

Considering that in 2004 Cheney said America would be nuked if Kerry got elected, I just don't see this Biden comment making a big difference. The only people who will be 'offended' by this comment are people who aren't voting Obama anyways.

Looks like the grandmother story is of higher priority to MSNBC and CNN thus far. I'm seeing a lot more coverage of her than I am of Biden.

I suspect this will be the story of the second half of the week.

Yeah, you have herpes. Go to http://www.herpesonline.org/hsv1vs2.html and learn about HSV type 1 which prefers to live in the nerves of the head/face. It seems that 60% of Americans are afflicted with type 2 herpes. 100 million children per year get this, usually from little kids kissing their moms (who have it) and sharing sippy cups with you as a child in kindergarten.

It seems that they are saying that 50% of American adults have this type of herpes. Most likely you will have less than one outbreak per year, it that. Usually people have one such outbreak and won't have another if the immune system is not compromised.

Be careful not to sneeze on anyone, kiss anyone, or have oral sex with anyone until the lesion completely heals just to be safe.

This. I kinda like the fact that this is what they are harping on...It'll give the Obama campaign to remind the voters that "its about the economy, stupid." They'll remind the voters that McCain will talk about anything but what matters most.

I wish them (bad) luck but if they bite too strongly, this will bite them back like the contrived "lipstick on a pig" stupidity.
