Regardless, Bush won. I was wondering more about having to get up on stage and eat crow, not be bitter.

It got bad for Kerry only shortly before the election. The Swiftboat Veterans for Peace shit did him in pretty quick.
The Swiftboat business actually began near the end of the primary season and really kicked into high gear during August. So you had basically had all of September and October of the swiftboat nonsense eating away at him. Simply put, the negative stuff started early, stayed consistent on one or two major things (swift boat vets, flip-flopping), and got constant attention for a loooooooong time.

McCain's campaign, by contrast, has been trying to jump from negative talking point to negative talking point, just long enough on each to find out that they aren't making massive changes to the status quo in the short term before they move on to the next. They've been inconsistent, all over the place, and grasping at straws. If they had found this Joe the Plumber stuff and particularly the "socialist" angle two months ago and then stuck with it all the way to the election, things might be very very different right now.

That's really the big difference between why negative attacks worked on Kerry and not on Obama. Well, that and the fact that Obama has way way way way waaaaay more natural charisma than Kerry did and can more easily weather such attacks.

Man,

As a test of my will and endurance, I just came from a 3-hour debate session in the Hannity.com forums. No plans to change minds, but there is something exhilarating about reducing conservatives to personal insults and idiotic arguments.

I'm spent. Hold me gaf

:lol :lol :lol

I'm surprised you had the patience for that. If anything there's a certain level of enjoyment from fuckin with people's perceptions to get that out of them.

Campbell Brown: No Bias, No Bull

Really CNN? I like her as a commentator as much as anyone, but that's one dumbass title.

At least she got her own show now.

The lower newspaper would have to read Obama defeats McCain for it to be like the original picture (Harry Truman is the guy holding it up).
Or it should be Obama's head on there instead of McCain's.

We can't let this happen.

Depends on how you're reading that. If you're taking it as a direct reference to that particular moment in history, then you would want it, because Dewey was prematurely listed as the winner when Truman won the election. So if that situation were to happen now, it'd be Obama holding up the Chicago Tribune erroneously listing McCain the winner. :D

Hey, could someone link me to a site with polling data for the past several elections? You know, a site with those neat little graphs that show the oscillations in polling support? It would be much appreciated!

ZOGBY poll: Drudge is in a coma!

Obama 50.2 (+1.2)
McCain 43.3(-1.1)

http://zogby.com/

Drudge has already dealt with this by clearly stating that ALL polls are in doubt!

Which is a pathetic argument for conservatives to make right now, because if anything, the only thing pollsters IMO are underestimating is AA turnout and sheer outrage at the Bush Administration. McCain supporters who thinks he will lose are the group they have to worry about not showing up, IMO.

I don't know where the pollsters get the support for McCain to be honest. Maybe my anecdotal sample is isolated. But I used to live with pretty conservative crowd from the south/bible belt. Still keep tabs on them. No one approves of Bush or republicans anymore. Infact I'm pretty sure every incumbent in my old and new states are getting the boot. People are just plain pissed.

CNN/TIME (Oct. 23-28)

Pennsylvania: Obama 55, McCain 43
North Carolina: Obama 52, McCain 46
Nevada: Obama 52, McCain 45
Ohio: Obama 51, McCain 47
Arizona: McCain 53, Obama 46

http://thepage.time.com/2008/10/30/more-battleground-numbers/

Well I guess nothing's gonna go on in AZ. A false alarm like WV. Very encouraging numbers out of those other states, even if CNN isn't particularly rated highly on 538.

Ohio: O+2, M+3 (net McCain +1) - So it tightened by a point since over a week ago. However, it's kinda hard to win if you don't have 50% of the vote.

Pennsylvania: O+4, M-Even (net Obama +4) - Last poll was about five weeks ago. In that time, Obama's solidified a pretty nice looking lead there.

North Carolina: O+1, M-1 (net Obama +2) - Last poll was from the 20th.

Nevada: O+3, M+2 (net Obama +1) - Last poll from the 20th too. I think it's safe to say the state's pulling away in a similar fashion to how Colorado and Virginia were earlier in the year.

Anyway, it's pretty great that 4/5 have a 51+ win percentage. Hopefully it translates into actual votes by the time the polls close.

Selzer & Co. has released its poll for Indiana:

10/29. Likely voters. MoE 4% (9/17 numbers)

Obama 46 (47)
McCain 45 (44)

Reading the Star this morning, if there's a huge turnout Obama's expected to win going away. :D

Most of the "somewhat likely to vote" group favors him strongly.

It's NBC/Mason-dixon and has it at 48-44. It's an outlier, but even that margin would be comfortable.

Especially given the slight Mason-Dixon Republican house effect.
God, so much knowledge accumulated over almost a year on everything related to the American election that will become useless overnight on Wednesday :(

Fun fact: The last Mason-Dixon poll of PA was from September 17th. It gave Obama a 2 point lead (46-44).

This was when the other polls were giving Obama a 5-6 point lead.

oh my god, the hopium

"It's a lot easier to get Obama to 375 than it is to get McCain to 270" - Chuck Todd

they just spent the last 10 minutes trying to find a way

Joe the Plumber is the perfect representation of the McCain campaign. I'll just leave it at that.

You mean how McCain is mainly supported by people who would be much better off during an Obama administration yet their visions of grandeur won't allow them to make cold rational decisions based on their well being?

Yeah. He's the hero they deserve, but not they need right now... so they'll hunt him, because he can take it. Because he's not their hero.

When on Tuesday will the first polls close? That is, when will media outlets start feeling free to call them?
i think the earliest was 6-8p est in 04 but we'll have to see if there are any adjustments this time... the turnout will be monumental.

I know this is old, but I had to cut this down: They're not praying TO it, they're praying FOR it. It is a widely held belief that mass prayer can positively affect the world at large. criticize it all you want, but get it right at least.

Your first chance for playing political pundit comes early in the night, perhaps soon after the first round of polls close at 7 p.m. ET. (To simplify things, in this story all times are Eastern Time.)

Six states' polls close at this time, but you should pay particular attention to Indiana and Virginia.
Excellent. With my current schedule I usually get up in later evening, but I don't want to miss this.

I thought you were never supposed to ask God for wealth to begin with? (king solomon?)

Anyways .. On last nights infomercial, it was greatly production work, at one point my wife looks over at me and says " there are no commercials during this?" I replied" this IS the commercial" as she realized it herself at the same time. It just looked that much like some sort of documentary and for a moment she forgot.

The Bible has a lot to say about the folly of obsession over material wealth.
