Which one and why?

Edit: I tried to make this a poll but mis-clicked somewhere and now i can't edit it 🤷‍♂️

Edit 2: Poll fixed, thanks mods!

I would pick Metal Slug 3 because of the zombie level.

Metal Slug X (remake of 2) and Metal Slug 5 tie for my favorites. Each of the games have their charm, though. I love the alternate pathways and bizarre power ups (like zombie mode and fattie mode).

Stage 2 in Metal Slug 5 has an awesome shmup section at the end of the level, with an awesome soundtrack to boot:

I love the first one, it's the only one I managed to beat with one credit. The other's where just too much to take. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Loved X and 3 tho, all great games with incredible pixel art.

The entire series is as good as run n guns will ever get.

Metal Slug 1 is still the best.
1 is the best paced and doesnt take too long to finish.
1 is the more serious and most militant of the series before all the alien craziness.

Alot of people love 3 but that last level is just not fun to me - too long and slogs the entire game down. The spaceship section goes on forever and is mediocre and boring. I ususally turn the game off when I make it to the last level of 3.

1

Above is right. MS1 felt perfectly paced and balanced to me. I could usually get to the final stage on one continue. The final stage is some Grade A bs though, but on the whole the game felt most fair out of all of them.

I'll need someone to refresh my memories on which is which, it's been a while.
I'm pretty sure the one with mummies was Metal Slug 2?
Which one had zombies?
Which one had you riding a mammoth?
Which one had aliens?
Which one had those masked savage cultists in the jungle?
I think X was the remake of one of the older games?

Well it's not really important. My favourite one is the first one, because it's the only one I could complete on a single credit. The next ones all had some complete bullshit bosses with unavoidable (unless you have godly reflex) attacks, save maybe the second one.

I had MS1 on Saturn and played it all the time, and even after going through the games on MSC on PSP, I still like the first the best.

2nd one because I have the most and most fun memories from it when spending countless hours in arcade saloons back in the day, it was the go-to co-op game.

I own 1,2,3,X, but haven't finished any since buying on PC. Previously owned 3 on PS3, so I finished that years ago. If 3 is the best, I'm not sure how much I'll enjoy the rest. I'm often too impatient for these games and get myself killed.

Why has nobody managed to successfully make a newer spiritual successor to Metal Slug (not to cheap retro knocks-off that don't bring any interesting to the table)?

I mean besides Cuphead?

Metal Slug comes from an era when AAA run n gun was a thing. Contra, Shinobi, Earthworm Jim, Sunset Riders, Gunstar Heroes, etc were all considered banner titles for their respective platforms/brands. Genres tend to peak (in quality/craftmanship) when competition is highest.

It's true that there are trends in VG genres, which then evolve, but there's also no shortage of excellent retro or new FPS, RPGs, Zelda-Like, Schmups etc...I wonder why modern takes on run&gun hasn't been a thing especially given the success of Cuphead.

Oh actually I know, most who've tried have yield mediocre results or Cuphead copycats, that's a shame.

have you tried Blazing Chrome? It's pretty much like Hard Corps 2.

Xenocrisis is cool too although it's more of a Smash TV game.

Both are not my thing, besides Cuphead I don't see anything having done the run&gun/boss-rush thing that well in terms of design unless I'm missing a title.

Hard Corps 2 however looks interesting, will give it a go, although I'm not big into Contra

X and 2. Followed by 3.

2/X has a way better difficulty pacing and looks more rewarding. 3 is awesome as well, but once you jump to boss 2 phase 1 you notice a spike in the boss difficuty.

The only game remotely like Cuphead I can think of is Alien Soldier, and that is over 25 years of vidya, so....

BTW Hard Corps 2 doesn't exist, I was saying that Blazing Chrome is the sort of game I think a sequel to that Genesis game would be like.

I love them up to and including 3 but i'd probably have to pick the first one. Just coz i think it has the perfect difficulty level and it's the right length. I can throw it on once a year, run through it in one credit, and it never outstays its welcome. It's perfectly consistent from start to finish.
It's also the innovator of the series, the sequels are fine too but they just re-used the same assets and gameplay so they're a case of 'more of the same'.

It may just all be nostalgia though, coz it was one of the games i got with my MVS cabinet so i played the utter shit out of it.

3,X, and 1 are great games, but I chose 3 because of all the branching paths and surprises found in this game. Can't wait to see if SNK gets back on track with their upcoming installment in the series.

By Hard Corps 2 I meant Uprising which looks like it tried to be something close to Metal Slug. Also you're thinking purely in genre or gameplay, I'm talking overall Art and Game design.

I fully acknowledge Metroid's (NES) shortcomings but it is still one of my favorite games of all time - please see my avatar. I always think of Metroid as the book and Super Metroid as the movie. My mind/imagination fills in so many details in the original and the memory of playing it alone in a dark room as a kid will always stick with me. Plus that floaty jump in Super always bothered me.

Yeah for me Metal Slug X was as good as it gets, its the one I seem to automatically steer towards when given the choice.

2

Better in every way if compared to the first one. Sound, music, stages, weapons...

I could choose 3, but sometimes is bullshit level of hard
