Polygon: all ps4 games are cancelled

MS plans to outright buy exclusivity to make up for their lacking hardware and dumbass DRM situations.

They gonna try and brute force success.

Well at least it gives another developer plenty of time to come up with a game for the intent of directly competing with Titanfall

I guess that's possible but it doesn't seem to fit Respawn's intentions for the IP to be the multiplatform shooter that will eclipse CoD.

Respawn's deal is through EA Partners, no? It wouldn't be within EA's power to make such a deal, so it would have to be Respawn making such a deal as they own the IP, no?

Chris Grant needs to cite a source on this.

Holy shit, MS really doesn't want Titanfall to be on ps4.

They most definitely want this to be their new Gears of War in terms of impact.

I wonder how Respawn feels about this, screwed all over again?

If this is EA's doing, without input from respawn, I think titanfall 1 could be the last titanfall.

Sad for PS4-only owners but a smart move by Microsoft if they want to broaden their exclusive game portfolio.

They would have had to deal with Respawn on this one, they still control and own the IP.

They are only published under EA Partners, EA has control of the physical publishing of the game, which would explain the exclusivity agreement, but Respawn has full ownership of the IP.

No. EA does not own the IP in any way, shape, or form.

I was gonna say...why would Respawn dudes make the same mistake twice. Why even leave IW if they were going to give up control of their IP.

When in doubt, throw money to smooth things out.

Pretty shitty if true but I imagine they had to do something like this. Just keep them coming on PC at least...

Seems questionable til confirmed.

And nothing from Polygon counts as 'confirmation'.

But if so, probably made the right choice, franchise seems like it will give them some leverage in the Warz.

And it would be Polygon's editor of all people that knows.

(I like him though, listened to him for years on the Joystiq Podcast).

This is factually incorrect. Respawn holds the rights to the IP, and the deal was made with EA who has the publishing rights to the first game.

If this were on a podcast, it would mean the news were out some time ago so they could record. Which means we'd have heard about this. Unless he is breaking news.

This sounds like it would be major news to just drop on a podcast a ton of people don't listen to.

The Vergecast is always a live show.

Good move by MS. Most of their big franchises are getting a bit stale at this point, so it's strategic to be able to promote a new IP at the beginning of the new generation. They probably want this to be their Gear of War for this gen. It's already thought of as an Xbox game, so why not just buy it out and make it an Xbox franchise? MS has the money, and I'm sure they're worried about the One not doing as well as they thought. This is what "throwing money at it until it works" looks like.

Didn't Respawn own the IP? So if MS bought it they must have done so willingly?

Im not convinced this is true. If it is surely MS would just go straight to Respawn and publish it rather than go through EA...

So they BOUGHT an IP that they aren't even going to publish...

....

...okay.

If they bought the IP, then they would have had to buy it from Respawn, not EA. Seems unlikely.

If it's Respawns IP then they will have been the ones to sell it.

Doesn't have to be sold. Publisher agreements can be entered into as we see the case with Titanfall 1. I doubt MS bought out full rights to the IP or full out publisher rights from EA.
