What does Respawn think of this?

These are lining up..

I'm doubting this until Respawn confirms. They seemed legitimately upset that Titanfall 1 was an exclusive so I don't get why they would sell. I don't think any amount of money MS throws them would equal the potential profits from a multiplat franchise.

GUYS...

EA CANNOT SELL THE IP TO MICROSOFT. They are publishing Titanfall 1 so they can do whatever they want with that game, but the IP belongs to Respawn. If by some choice MS bought it without anyone knowing except the EIC of Polygon, then Respawn sold it, and it would make it even more bizarre that MS isn't publishing it.

Umm, EA is publishing Titanfall 1 so they can do whatever they want with the game.

I meant more in terms of seemingly having no input on important decisions that impact the future of his studio's IP.

You'd think after what happened at Acti, he and the studio as a whole would be a lot more cautious when it comes to dealing with mega publishers like EA...

I can see this thread blowing up. If Respawn really let themselves get bought out then a lot of people are going to crying for blood. I'd take this with a grain of salt.

I don't know if this is a good news for the X1. That would means MS rely heavily on FPS again, and I don't think this is the smartest strategy. Wait and see I guess.

Focus please, people. EA has nothing to do with this, they do not own the actual IP. If this does turn out to be true, Respawn sold the IP to Microsoft themselves.

It's one thing to be confused about Titanfall 1.

But why would you say Titanfall 2 is not coming to PS4 if you weren't 100% confident? He's definitely put his ass on the line.

Ain't nothin' wrong with a MONSTER PAYDAY people! It's all about the money!

isn't EA just publishing the first game? Any deal for the franchise after the first game would surely be in respawn's arena?

I wonder if Vince will just clear this up for us. I'm sure he didn't sell it to Microsoft. He sounded disgusted by EA making Titanfall exclusively Xbox1.

Until Microsoft properly confirms this, which they absolutely will if it is true...

...I'll assume that this is a fantasy of Gies, the world's biggest Microsoft fanboy.

seriously wtf. the IP still hasn't seen it's first game and it been bought out by MS.

obviously Respawn sold it. question is, are they going to become a MS first party or split off and start yet another new IP.

The way i see it working is that Respawn have entered in to a contractual agreement with EA where they will be exclusive publishers of Respawn software. If EA don't want to publish Respawn games on other consoles then they don't have to.

EA have then entered into an agreement with Microsoft where they will only publish Titanfall games on the xbox and PC hence Titanfall not being released anywhere else. IP has not changed hands, Respawn couldve been left out of the loop etc.

Smart move, but quite sad. They would need this in order combat the onslaught of amazing exclusives Sony is going to crush them with this year and the next.

Haha, no. Respawn may be ok with console exclusivity, but they'd never want another publisher to own their work again. That's the very reason they're on EA partners, that program allows them to retain their IP.

Hastily transcribed around 1:10 in the video:

"We know what Microsoft's got coming out. They've already shown some of it, they've talked about it and they've already put Titanfall with a giant pin on the map. In order to hammer that Titanfall "1" was always going to be an Xbox/PC exclusive. In order to really hammer that in, they've bought the rights to the whole series."

"Oh, ok"

"Oh, oh they did"

"It it it's not just the first..."

"Titanfall 2 will never... They bought Titanfall"

"Uh.... Probably a good business move for them"

"Probably a good buy. Dump truck of money."
