Polygon Caught Lying About PS4 on Their Xbox One Stream

Lock if old:

This morning, gaming site Polygon is doing a twelve-hour live stream showing off the Xbox One. Right before the comical demo of Dead Rising 3, where most of the voice commands didn’t seem to work and they couldn’t even snap Internet Explorer correctly, a panel of editors discussed the system that the site seems to be carrying so much water for.

During this panel, site Editor-in-Chief Chris Grant stated a couple times that one advantage the Xbox One has over the PS4 is that the Xbox One supports remote controls and the PS4 does not. He even used the example that grandma would want to use the Xbox One over the PS4 because she wouldn’t want to use the Dual Shock 4 to watch a movie. Later, he used the example of Netflix on how the Xbox One is a superior choice over the PS4 for Netflix because of remote support.

The problem with these statements is that they are lies.

The PlayStation 4, like the Slim PS3 before it, fully supports HDMI-CEC controls. While every TV manufacturer calls it something different, virtually every major television that is relatively recent supports it. Samsung, Sony, Sharp, Panasonic, LG, Hitachi, Toshiba, Philips, and component manufacturers like Onkyo all support this Consumer Electronics Control feature of HDMI. Due to HDMI-CEC, you can use your normal television remote control to operate the PS4.

While the Xbox One does support an IR-Blaster, most devices have moved away from that because HDMI-CEC is simply more convenient due to being able to use your normal TV remote for control.

I even made a video to demonstrate this:

Why do people always accuse Polygon of lying. If they are such a bunch of liars why continue to visit the site? Why not arrange a boycott?

Is it possible he made the statement in error or out of ignorance instead of it being deliberate lie? There is a difference.

Never assume malice what can be explained by ignorance.

And in that case, must we be informed of Polygon's every slip up and mistake? Lord knows they've had enough of them by now.

They sound like the epiotme of level headed given their opening paragraph.

Also, anyone listening knew what he was talking about. HDMI-CEC is great, not everyone's TV is going to support it though.

A lot of these types of streams make incorrect off-the-cuff remarks (even gaf's much loved GB crew). Lying" is a bit dramatic, but they are clearly incorrect.

This was likely a result of stupidity rather than malice, but for the sake of grandmas everywhere, I'm glad we have furiousfanboys.com to right this wrong.

Well, I'm not one to defend them, but is this feature really that well known to a lot of people? I only knew about it because some GAF posts mentioned it off-hand, couple months back.

I wouldn't go so far as say they were lying...sounds more like tech ignorance which isn't shocking at this point.

These are people apart of the same group of guys who keep saying that there is no visible difference between 720p and 1080p.

More inclined to believe this.

People in the gaming industry can be shockingly misinformed. Where is that gif of the dude in a Bonus Round saying you don't need Gold to play multiplayer on XBox LIVE?

that was a special case. he was on gold forever he just forgot.

Why did Chris Grant call him a "creep" or "weird dude"? What did he say that was creepy or weird?

probably for commenting on his twitter account out of nowhere but then again. twitters gonna twitter.

saying this is "lying" is a bit of a stretch. misinformed? sure I don't think there's malice here

Chris Grant from Polygon blocked the dude after stuff was pointed out. I do think this is a case of misinformation, yet again though someone from Polygon acts inflammatory.

I own a PS4 and didn't know about the HDMI-CEC controls until this thread.

So... ya.

The general thought was that the PS4 doesn't have an actual remote though. Hell, I've seen gaffers complain about it. Seems like a simple mistake. I just learned about it now from the OP.

of course, maybe these journalists should know that but that's ignorance, not malice.

Maybe when some people here stop pretending there's no bias at all from them just because of review scores then maybe people will stop posting about it.

Ignorance, shilling, shoveling out insults and provoking GAF has proved to be a healthy revenue stream for Polygon. If anything, this kind of exposure only encourages them.
