Does anyone know when Polygon turned its policies around 180 degrees?

When the site launched, they had long form pieces and great interviews. Now, they do the clickbaitiest of clickbait stories and have lost many of the original staff.

From all the contact I've had with Chris Grant and the McElroys, they're super nice dudes, so this development makes me a bit sad.

Jumping the gun and writing a story on a joke tweet just seems like something that an editor should nip in the bud.

hey it might be the Shenmue 3 announcement reaction don't forget that

It's weird if that's the reason for the salt because while Jeff doesn't like Shenmue, he was one of the leading figures in clearing the confusion surrounding Shenmue 3's Kickstarter by giving Adam Boyes a platform to clarify Sony's role in the project during the Giant Bomb E3 live shows.

In fact I've seen that interview used by backers of the Kickstarter several times in GAF Shenmue 3 threads to counter arguments that Sony and/or Suzuki have not been transparent with the project.

So yeah, kind of dickish and petty and the standard of "disconnected from reality/gaming" is "doesn't like what I like".

His response is great.

I doubt he wanted this to be a thing. Just wanted to say it was uncool. But god damn it if gaming journalism is got something resembling a thing they're gonna make it one damn it. WE'VE GOT SCANDALS.

Destiny would never hurt you like this jeff

Feels like people's reaction to the article is out of whack. The article isn't saying much more than "this is a thing that happened". It told me about something that happened that I find interesting. The article was even kinda tongue-in-cheek in parts. Article seems like no big deal to me.

I believe the source is from the language used. See:

Which is wrong on several levels.

He didn't get excited enough during the E3 announcement.

Mediocre franchise or not, Gerstmann should feel honored to be immortalized in a game/trailer, but he hates games so you know...

Relax, it's a joke.

The signal was when Russ Pitts left. I believe he was in charge of that particular section.

As shitty as they can be, from what I understood, they dropped this stuff because it simply wasn't paying the bills.

How is the headline wrong? "Not happy about it", "kind of not OK with it". Seems about the same to me.

He tweeted it himself, so don't complain when your public tweets about a videogame are used by a videogame website.

I think it's the fact that the OP used "mini-scandal" that is throwing people off. The article itself is fine. It's a news story. Nothing big, but it's news.

I just look forward to the snark filled article on Giant Bomb tomorrow about the Polygon article about a tweet from Jeff about a video from 2K. Its going to be great!

It's not his likeness though. It's the likeness of an imaginary create a character. Looks nothing like the actual portly video game journalist.

Dr. Tracksuit with the "MD" and everything used to be a recurring character for sketches on Giantbomb.

It's definetly him.

I mean, as a journalist, having your likeliness in a game kinda...hurts in a professional setting.

OK, but is he a journalist or a sketch actor? Those aren't the same thing and if he's worried about his professionalism, he wouldn't be dressing up in costume on the regular.

Also am I missing something about this whole "Polyong" thing?

For a site that occasionally publishes some top notch work they have a terrible knack for publishing some of the dumbest shit each and every year since they were founded.

When fake wrestling revolving around fake wrestling put into fake wrestling is more interesting that the real fake wrestling

I didn't know tracksuits and glasses consituted someone's likeness.

Can we PLEASE stop with this? The second I saw that character I thought "Doctor Tracksuit." Clearly it's identifiable enough to constitute an infringement.

I guess the dude from Smash Mouth and Guy Fieri should be upset as well. How dare 2K use the likeness of an overweight bearded man with shades on. How deplorable...

I don't think I understand your argument or what you're defending here?

Reality: See OP
Gaming: See E3, his opinions and reviews.

Are we talking about the most recent e3 where he got really Fucking excited about Mario maker and just cause 3, even becoming giddy about them?

I heard that Gerstman didn't start crying when they announced a Shenmue 3 kickstarter and he didn't jump on a table and did a little dance when they showed a CGI trailer for that remake. And the Last Guardian thing didn't make him fall on his knees and pray to God. What a jaded prick..

pardon my ignorance on the subject, but is Doctor Tracksuit even viable to be infringed upon in the first place? Do you not have to go through some trademark process?

Man, Polygon is crazy. I hope they dont read one of my tweets and write a bout a "mini-schedule" because I didn't enjoy my Sushi last weekend.

I just cannot wrap my head around this article really. Jeff just kinda threw that out on Twitter, Polygon saw it and thought it was a good idea to make a story about someones tweet? Someone working in the same industry as the writer and the editor of this article?

Polygon is doing the EXACT SAME THING that 2K did with Jeff. Polygon is using Jeff for clicks just like 2K used his likeness for media attention.

from what little i heard... longform doesn't get the clicks and doesn't pay the bills
