#5 makes me feel sad..my parents live on the other side of the planet and i don't have a family here......

but overall, his words are great.

I think what you're not understanding is that people don't get a choice if they work or not. They don't just wake up and go, "I think I'll go to work today." Those decisions are usually made for them. Unless you specifically designate it as a day off, most people will be forced to work, not have the choice of whether or not they get to stay home or come to work.

As long as you still get the appropriate amount of downtime each week, this is kind of how the world works anyway. I don't get to choose that I work Monday to Friday.

If you start saying "Sunday is the day of rest, for everyone", no-one will get any shit done, ever, because no-one else will be working. Some people have to be able to work on Sunday so that people can actually live their lives.

And you want Sunday to work the same way? You want people to also HAVE to go to work Sunday, just like Monday through Friday (and Saturday)? Why? Because you're bored?

EDIT: Get shit done? Dude, get a grip on your life. Your problem wasn't with getting things done. You said you were bored. That's all. And most people won't be able to get stuff done, BECAUSE THEY'RE TOO BUSY WORKING!!! Hell, I use Sundays to get stuff done around the house and handle issues with family.

How can you possibly have interpreted my post to mean that they should do these things while working?

I'm saying that I disagree with him that Sunday should be a special day where you "have" to spend time with your family, or have some downtime, or whatever. Certain religions don't let you work on a Sunday - I couldn't live with not having that option.

All I'm saying is that Sunday should just be like a Saturday. If you want to work, you should be able to work. If you want to spend it with your family, cool. Sundays are always so quiet and boring, they fucking suck.
Again. What is this supposed to mean? What country are you from? Most people do not have that choice on any given day. His point is that it shouldn't be like another Saturday- a day that for many people is like any other week day that they have to work on (myself included on some weeks). He's saying that we as a society should set aside a day when people don't have to worry about work, or their loved ones working, and can spend time with one another for a more emotionally and spiritually healthy life. And the work ethic we have in the US is absolutely not conducive to that. If you get bored and frustrated when the mall or Best Buy or local movie theater is closed for one day then I don't know what to tell ya.

10. Work for peace. "We are living in a time of many wars," he said, and "the call for peace must be shouted. Peace sometimes gives the impression of being quiet, but it is never quiet, peace is always proactive" and dynamic.

As Jesus said, "Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God." Sometimes, in order to reach peace, people must be proactive in doing everything they can to stop those who are committing evil. Which reminds me of the following quote:

No, and thanks for rewording my post as you see fit! You didn't even make reference to the bit where I said, "As long as you still get the appropriate amount of downtime each week".

All I am saying is that Sundays should not be closed off for people going to work. You have to have some people working - shop workers, emergency services, tourist attractions, etc, otherwise the whole bloody country shuts down and everyone is just sitting at home with their parents.

Right, and I'm saying fuck that. All of it.

This notion that the whole country should shut down for one day a week is so archaic. Sundays are not special.

Some people do work on Sundays. In fact, a lot of people work on Sundays. Many stores are open, just not all day like Monday-Sunday.

And people can only get "downtime" by getting time off, unless you're saying that people should work less hours on the other days of the week, in which you would have limited hours just like Sunday.

Dude, where are you from? Emergency services are open 24/7/365. Always. And many shops (grocery stores, barnes and noble, best buy, etc.) are open on Sunday. Hell, the best buy around me only closes one hour earlier on Sunday, lol.

The point of this day, you could do it on any day of the week, is to give rest to your mind and body. There are benefits to this that have scientific evidence to back them up:

Why Your Brain Needs More Downtime

Research on naps, meditation, nature walks and the habits of exceptional artists and athletes reveals how mental breaks increase productivity, replenish attention, solidify memories and encourage creativity.

"We also know that the mind is very powerful and can help with healing, so a rested, relaxed mind is able to help the body heal better," said Withers.

Psychologists echo the value of vacations for the mind.

"The impact that taking a vacation has on one's mental health is profound," said Francine Lederer, a clinical psychologist in Los Angeles who specializes in stress and relationship management. "Most people have better life perspective and are more motivated to achieve their goals after a vacation, even if it is a 24-hour time-out."

Yeah. You know what else is archaic? Weekends and 40 hour weeks. I want everything open motherfucking 24/7.

By the way no one said shut the whole country down and close all services on sundays.

Someone's mad they couldn't get Chic-Fil-A on Sunday...
It can suck for a lot of people. These services provide a constant distraction for many. Without it, they may have to actually sit down and reflect and realize that they're lonely assholes who no one wants to be around, unless something's going on.

Lol, now I'm just being an ass. I'm not following #8.

Most jobs simply don't work that way. And by "most" I mean just about every job you can think of.

Edit: Actually, reading the rest of your responses tells me that you need some number 8 (the first part). This is a sttrrraannnggeee thing to be negative about. One day where you won't be able to go to a store and buy "thing". It's really not that big of a deal.

I just cannot find a reason to hate on this list, and I'm perplexed on why a few people in this thread would do so.

Like, you know he's not being LITERAL on any of those points, he's just talking in a general sense. You don't have to shut everything down on Sunday. Besides, a lot of the people working on Sundays are there for only weekend shifts.

I mean, just... chill out, guys. No need to look for any small cracks in his argument.

If you start saying "Sunday is the day of rest, for everyone", no-one will get any shit done, ever, because no-one else will be working.

Sounds good to me. Everyone should have a collective day off. If you can't wait or adjust your schedule for things being closed on a day then I have no sympathy for you.

All of that is either common sense or something you learn pretty damn early on in life. Chances are you are a sociopath or generally deranged otherwise.

Unfortunately, this isn't true for some people. It's getting harder and harder to take such values for granted in others.

You would think that but people are constantly told that they need certain things to be happy. Many of which aren't as simple as those listed. I agree that much of this is common sense but you know as well as I that common sense isn't always the driving force in peoples actions.

The entire advertising industry exists to make you believe that you need this *thing* to be happy in life. I'd say most people don't learn that you don't need consumerism until some tragedy happens, at least in US culture.

Common sense isn't a thing that exists. Humans aren't inborn with their individual culture's set of common beliefs and values. Which is what we really mean when we say common sense in any context that isn't talking about basic survival instincts. Valuing free time is cultural, and not somehow more common sense than "we value free time too much and should dedicate ourselves to work."

I have not read the list, but CMD-F "god" resulted in nothing, which is amazing.

6. Find innovative ways to create dignified jobs for young people. "We need to be creative with young people. If they have no opportunities they will get into drugs" and be more vulnerable to suicide, he said.

lol

I notice he doesn't have a single "Believe what I believe about religion" point. This list could be used for anyone. Good man.

I think this is a good list of general advice, but you clearly can't take #5 literally saying that everyone should specifically have Sunday off.

Yeah, fuck people that want electricity to be running on Sundays.
