While I don't think he sucks, I have yet to see a movie by Martin Scorsese that I really like.

I can acknowledge that he is a good filmmaker. But somehow I just can't enjoy his movies.

"SUCK" might be too strong for a few of these, but it takes a lot for me to care about anything these guys do.

Hate:
Clint Eastwood
Martin Scorsese
Kevin Smith

Incredibly overrated:
Peter Jackson
Robert Rodriguez
Ridley Scott
Wes Anderson
Quentin Tarantino
Tim Burton
Ron Howard

Brazil + 12 Monkeys + Fisher King means Gilliam has a free pass for the rest of his life.

As a film, JJ's Star Trek was as good or better than any of the other Star Trek films
? Just playing devils advocate or do you really think this? Surprised to see more members of the not with jj camp than expected, all the love he gets and all. As much as I love Lost, which he really isn't responsible for much of its success, I don't like anything else he has done, especially Lens Flare:the move.

Terrence Malick doesn't suck, but he's over-rated and pretentious.

I'll say that I don't understand Terrence Malick. Badlands was all right but COTDAMN The Thin Red Like bored me to tears. The New World is his one movie I really liked. Maybe he's more a theater experience? I've only seen his moves on TV.

Tim Burton fucking blows.
Nightmare Before Christmas was good, innovative, well written. Now for the love of God make something different.

Also, Chris Nolan. Seriously, after making Batman Begins (one of my favorite superhero movies of all time) he then went and directed the travesty that was The Dark Knight, or as I like to call it Generic Action Movie in Chicago About a Terrorist in Clown Makeup (Might Feature Batman Occasionally as Well)

It's a 150 minute F-zero GX cutscene.

Like he said, it's a good movie.

Seriously, it's a lot more than that which makes it a great movie easily one of my favorites that year.

This whole thread is ridiculous. Almost every "popular" director had a movie that was worth watching, so saying they suck would be nearly impossible.

Some Comments on People Named:

Tim Burton: More misses than hits for me, but I love Edward Scissorhands and Pee Wee's Big Adventure is probably my favorite comedy of all time.

John Woo: Much of his Hong Kong Stuff is great, but once he came to America, total drop off. Though Face/Off was kinda fun.

JJ Abrams: I really liked MI3 and enjoyed Star Trek (though I could understand it is vastly different than a normal Star Trek movie) so I don't quite understand the complaints on him.

I don't even know where to begin on Tarantino, Nolan, Scorsese, etc. Just mind boggling.

In the end, there really aren't any directors that I know of where people absolutely adore his work but I can't stand. Overrated? Meh, sure. But SUCK? Nah.

(And good god, I will never understand GAF's love of Speed Racer. Never.)

I've said this before, but he should have shifted his gears a bit when he made Big Fish and stuck with that style of storytelling. As it is now, Ed Wood & Big Fish were flukes.

I still like him but he is way predictable.

I don't understand how people like MI3, somehow it turned out even worse than the second film IMO...And am I mistaken or didn't Abrams also direct Cloverfield, which was one of the worst movies I saw that year. Oh and I disliked Star Trek, but okay I guess I can understand why some people like it.

Tim Burton -- I used to love this guy's stuff, but he's really just a relic of the 90's now. With the exception of Big Fish, he hasn't done anything really worth watching since Sleepy Hollow. Time to throw in the towel, Tim. Release a half-dozen shitty art books and melancholy tales of oyster boys and call it a day.

Wes Anderson -- I don't think this guy SUCKS -- I enjoy his movies, but I think he's overrated. Royal Tenenbaums was his only movie that really stood out to me, the rest were decent, but nothing exceptional. Including Fantastic Mr. Fox.

I don't care much for Kathyrn Bigelow. The Hurt Locker seems more like she got lucky rather than any indicator of natural artistry.

Point Break!

Oh shit...I just totally thought of mine, for real.

Cameron Crowe. His movies irk me. They just seem so fucking smug or something, can't put my finger on it.

Say Anything I guess is okay as an 80s comedy, but all his other shit, oh man. Almost Famous irritated me to no end. "I want to go Home." "You are home."

Fuck off with that shit.

I thought MI3 was much more exciting than MI2. Better action, more intense, never precisely knew how it was going to end. And Abrams did not direct Cloverfield, you are right on that. Which is why I didn't bring it up. Lots of people make that mistake.

It's interesting that you say that about The Thin Red Line if you enjoyed The New World. I think it's the other way around for me, though I did still come to enjoy it in the end (despite Colin Farrell). And you've seen Days of Heaven, right? Worth it for the soundtrack alone (Morricone).

Oh and to actually contribute to the thread (though it's probably not that controversial), I'll say that Bryan Singer is a talentless hack. His movies range from bad to mediocre, The Usual Suspects being his best one (I have not seen Public Access)... I think I've said this before.

One of my top 50 most favorite movies, :lol...I think it has so much heart and it captures the life of a young music-loving journalist so well in which I greatly relate.

yeah, I know a lot of people love it. One of the biggest things about it was how everyone in the movie was so completely flawed except the main character, who was innocent and not into all the drugs and shit.

I realize that the whole movie was a coming of age 'Boy sees the real world' thing, but it really seemed like revisionist history to me. I felt that Cameron Crowe was kind of letting himself off the hook, if that makes any sense. To be fair, I haven't seen that movie in years, I just remember being turned off by it, even though I really do love music a lot.

Are you a fan of Crowe's other films, like Singles and Jerry Macguire?

Absolutely love Jerry Macguire, but I don't like Singles too much.

Arguably, "suck" is overly harsh for a lot of these directors, because if you suck as a director, you're probably obscure and never got to direct more than a few films at best. So, inevitably, we're going to be talking about big name directors that people have at least some familiarity with.

That said, the two directors that I've seen a good chunk of their entire film line up that qualify in my book are Martin Scorsese and Wes Anderson.

My dislike of the first's films are pretty well known; I just find them consistently bland, long, fairly predictable, and uninteresting, almost universally across the board.

Anderson's films I always want to like more than I do. His work tends to fall under quirky for quirky's sake in my book, but there are elements of his films that I at least find somewhat interesting. Jim Jarmusch also falls into this category, but I've seen less of his films.

It's tempting to lump Oliver Stone in here, but Wall Street was golden in my book, and I really haven't seen enough of his other works to justify a strong enough position otherwise (in my latest act of heresy, I'll simply say Platoon left me wanting).

The guy who posted Francis ford coppola, the Coen Brothers, Hitchcock, and Kubrick must be trolling...:lol

Yo, listen. That guy you are talking about must be me so okay, maybe i was overreacting a bit when i said Kubrick, Coppola and Coen Brothers SUCK, but they are hooorrrrribly OVERRATED and kinda sucky too. Kubrick still has Full Metal Jacket so i give him some credit for that and Coen brothers made NCFOM which was decent, but that doesn't save them from damnation.

Woody Allen, Tim Burton and Alfred Hitchcock still SUCK though.

Since you think both hitchcock and kubrick suck a big one.

I think suck is really strong, but I have never understood the massive Tarantino love. Jackie Brown is his best movie I think, and that's not spectacular.

I just saw it for the first time about a month ago. I thought it sucked hard too.
Jerry Macguire was good though.

Who is a good director? Heh, my friends often ask me this and it's quite difficult for me to answer this cause almost all of my favorite movies are from different directors so there's no one that really stands out... i'm really bad at making top movies/directors lists, but i gave it a try..

Some (not all!) of my favorite movies (Not in any particular order of course):

I hope you can deduce something from this.

Lost in Translation
Memories of Murder
28 Days Later
Sunshine
Chan-Wook Park's Vengeance trilogy (Lady Vengeance, Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance)
Collateral
Leon
The Thing
Fallen Angels
Chungking Express
Blade Runner
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Gladiator
Jaws
The Bourne Identity
Magnolia
Boogie Nights
A Bittersweet life
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Donnie Darko
Ghost in the shell

Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Mad Max 2
Failan
American Psycho

+ PEACE GUYS!

Shutter Island's twist was blatantly obvious after the first 20 minutes. Scorsese is a shadow of his former self btw..

You know... I almost let that one slide, then I remembered Desperado. Also I remember The Faculty being pretty decent, but it's been many years since I've seen it. Either way Planet Terror and From Dusk Til' Dawn make up for all the shitty Spy Kids movies.
Er...Sin City (by far his best)? Don't recall Tarantino having anything to do with that film.

Tarantino directed the car scene where Owen talks to Del Toro (the corpse).

Personally there seems to be a rash lately of "great" directors given free range to carry out their "vision". Instead of getting the greatness we expected we get bloated, self indulgent crap.
