[Portal 2] Aperture Investment Opportunity #3: "Turrets"

CrunchyFrog said:
Valve is just awesome. And man I didn't know there was another ARG goin on. The Portal 2 BBS thing was ridiculously addictive.
Yeah, I only heard some people wondering why all the indi games updated on April 1st. I didn't know they found all this in there! Wow.

I really wish turrets had a way to chase you through the levels. Or perhaps some other force that caused duress for the player.

Haha, that'd be terrifying.

*softly spoken* "Please come back!"
Me: "NO! I WANT TO LIVE!"

I noticed this also contains images from the original Portal 2 ARG, particularly the loaded turret and the bedroom.

EDIT: yup, found em, wonder if there are any more clues hidden on the old bbs?

I don't get how this is rated E10+. There was blood splatter in the original game. BLOOD SPLATTER.

The two theories floating around are either the ESRB have been more lenient this time around or Valve have toned down the blood splatter effect.

Which would be fine with me. I don't care about blood splatter in a single player action puzzle game and the co-op has robots that don't bleed.

The page from the manual is great. Here.
Included in the packaging of you Home Safety Turret, you should find a freezer pack containing one (1) Aperture Science Test Engagement Crisis Simulation Meat. Unwrap Meat from packaging and microwave for twelve (12) minutes. DO NOT LET COOL.

Standing at a safe distance from your Home Safety Turret, throw heated Crisis Simulation Meat in the path of its Optical Sensor Range. If Crisis Simulation Meat does not undergo real-time crisis resolution, your turret may be defective. Carefully approach it from behind and place it back in its packaging. DO NOT STEP WITHIN ITS SENSOR RANGE.

and

TROUBLESHOOTING
Due to jostling during shipping, your Home Safety Turret may arrive already in Crisis Resolution Mode. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REASON WITH YOUR HOME SAFETY TURRET.
"real-time crisis resolution" :lol

I dont know, apparently Im not the only one http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=turrent

Weird. I feel stupid now.

Linguistically they are nearly identical in terms of sound as well as what your mouth does when you say it, so it's understandable that you could hear it wrong, then say it wrong, and no one would ever notice and correct you.

That said, I haven't seen that mistake in text before, ever.

Valve took a shot at a forum users mom in a television ad. They are now officially the greatest company on Earth.

...explain?

A code hidden in the ad translates to this:

Edit: Apparently, it decodes to Also... superdinoman's mom.

superdinoman is a member of the forum Facepunch, which has been on top of this ARG stuff. Dougtato and MiKaXsUs are also members there and their names were hidden in the ad.

I'm pumped for Portal 2, but to be honest these videos don't do that much for me...much prefer hot gameplay videos =)

But you don't really want any of it spoiled for you, do you? If you've already decided to buy, why not just enjoy the funny ads that don't subtract anything from your eventual experience with the game?

Wow, GAF disappoints with the complete omission of the relevant VG Cats strip on the first page.

When has anyone ever been disappointed by the omission of VG Cats? Other than right now, apparently.

Nabs said:

Because it's relevant? The guy does the joke back when the Orange Box came out and Valve does the joke 4 years later. Coincidence? Probably. But still relevant.

Spire said:
They aren't the same joke, they just happen to both involve turrets and babies.

And the parents leaving for some place and let the turret watch over the baby.

The only difference between the two jokes is the baby dying in the VG Cats' version. (Which is less funny than Valve's version, indeed.)

One is a peek-a-boo joke, the other is a joke about wildly over-the-top security. Completely different punchlines.

It sucks I can't get this game, I've been waiting for years :(

I no longer have a 360 and my PC is too bad too run it. I'll be playing it ASAP though, maybe I'll upgrade my computer sometime.

Love these videos, very well made.

these videos are safe to watch. they contrain nothing siginificant

If you're really, really reading into these trailers (although not as much as the ARG guys are, obviously) the whole
this is the same technology we've been using on robots for decades
and/or the whole
copyright 1998
thing could be used to implicitly date Johnson's tenure and/or imply that
what's happening to the robots is happening now-ish
. Or they could be funny throwaway gags.

But yes, either way, the trailers are spoiler free as far as the actual game is concerned.

Considering that just about everyone in this thread has Portal on PC, I figure I might as well post this here. Benjamuffin on the Steam forums actually went ahead and made the case skins that we all saw in the last Portal 2 teaser available for download for the original Portal.

Haha, that's great. I'll use one when I replay Portal while the sequel is pre-loading.
