same here - but if I remember correctly the FOV of hl2 was lower than that of portal2 - raising it helped me immensely

Hat's off to you OP for finishing h2 and portal! I tried the same for h1 and got about 3/4 of the way through and am about 1/2 through h2 (currently on hiatus), guess it's testament to how great these games are that people are willing to suffer for it!

Oddly enough the Left4Dead games are fine and so is TF2; I'm fine with Halo/CoD/BF/MEdge too. I remember full screen Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Turok and some of the old skool fps like Doom series making me ill, sucks because these games are so good.

I can get this with some games, Batman AA was the last bad one, SO FRUSTRATING!

but have just played a couple hours P2 this morning for the first time and I am fine. Hope it works out for you OP it is a cracking game ;)

Same here, Batman was really hard for me to play for some reason. I couldn't get farther than a couple of hours in before it wasn't worth it anymore. Most third person games I can play with no issues, but I don't know if it was the cape, just UE3 in general or what.

I still haven't played either Portal, and to be honest I'm a little hesitant with the problems others have had. I'll get to them eventually I guess.

I have played hundreds of FPS and none have ever given me motion sickness except HL2 and Portal. I finished both of them by playing in 15-20 minute sessions :)
Portal 2 is out and I got 15 minutes into it and wanted to barf.
Does anyone know of any FOV or Bobbing cfg settings that may help? I'd like to play COOP for more than 15 minutes

Thanks, Do any games make you motion sick?

chew a gum, this can help you extend the playtime. This is what i do when back in time i spend the afternoons playing Descent, the only game make me sick.

One of the reasons why I prefer having a third person option. I find myself so disoriented by first person perspective that I can't enjoy games that use it. At least with third person perspective I have something constant to focus on.

It's just UE3 games in general, for me. Have to wait till Monday before I can play Portal 2

Crazy talk there. Portal 2's default FOV is pretty high and I even noticed some fish-eye effect at times (at least on PC). Do you get sick because of the Portals or just walking around? I got motion sick at one puzzle, but thats just because I had no idea what direction I am facing and where the floor is.
Coming from playing HL2 recently it was immediately noticeable that FOV was higher in Portal 2. I think the trick to avoiding motion sickness is to keep your eyes focused around the centre of the screen and moving the mouse to look around. When you're looking at the edge and move the mouse things get really bad.

Still, it's annoying that they've removed the option to adjust it. Also gone is the number for mouse sensitivity, so I have to guess where on the bar my preference is.

So to summarize:

- Raise FOV
- Disable viewbob
- Open your window to get fresh air
- Put a small circular sticker in the middle of the screen
- Eat some ginger candy
- Dramamine
- Don't play in a completely dark room
- Turn off triple buffering
- Condition yourself by playing slightly longer periods of time every day (15 min, 30 min, etc)
- Chew gum

I started feeling nauseated playing P2 the other day, too. I didn't pay it much attention, because it didn't occur to me that playing the game was doing it. Just downed a gulp of Pepto Bismol and kept on going.

I don't have problems with most games (haven't played Crysis 2, but Crysis 1 was fine for me) but Valve games are rightly notorious in this respect. Had totally forgotten since I haven't played one in a while, but I was dizzy and nauseous (not horribly so) within a few minutes of playing Portal 2. Going to tweak the settings; it's all good. Even if I can't fix it I'll bear with it; it's worth it. :p

Really? cs has 90 degree fov by default, most other valve games have like 75.

Crysis 1 had 65... very noticable and had to change it, crysis 2 is just like being a horse with blinders, 55 degree fov what I don't even.

I know how weird it sounds, but I want to experience getting motion sickness from gaming just once. I have no way of understanding this problem for some people without it actually happening to me.

I always worry that I'll break my hand or something because then my #1 hobby goes out the window. I can't imagine being unable to play games from the first person perspective without getting motion sickness.

Redneck Rampage and Timesplitters always did it to me. The Infamous 2 beta is doing it to me as well because you constantly sweeping a camera around a city building stuff.

I am exactly the same, this game gives me terrible motion sickness, no other fps has ever done this but it gets so bad that it becomes unbearable after about 5 minutes.

I'm glad I only rented it and as much as I love it, its gonna have to go straight back. Which brings me on to somethings else.
My rented copy come with a PS3 code to play it on your PC if anyone wants it, I cant promise it ain't already been redeemed but i seriously doubt it as I rented on release day and I think the minimum rental is 5 days so I must've been the first renter. Anyway if you want it PM me and it's yours, first come first served.

I only get horrific motion sickness with Valve games. I made the mistake of playing 40 minutes of portal 2 instead of the normal 20-30 minutes. Instead of feeling a little sick I think I might throw up...

I was totally fine with Crysis 1/2. I did disable mouse accel/smoothing and made the FOV 90 up from the default 79 for 16x10 monitors in Crysis 2 though (set to 65 vertical 90 horizontal).

I'm gonna have to pick up some Dramamine to play this. Valve really should consider fixing this so I can play some other games they make. The HL series is too long to consider drugging myself to play.

Portal 2 defaults to a FOV of 90. I get motion sickness like hell in most FPSes. Not so here. There's very little head bobbing and a perfect FOV. I think it's strange you feel otherwise.

Half Life 2's default FOV was only 75, and gave me motion sickness terribly before I upped it to 90. Like, debilitating, bent over my god I want to die sickness. But once you bring it up it should be fine, and Portal 2 should be fine from the get-go.

Portal 2 doesn't have FOV settings at the moment. The default is something like 70-75, though. It's not that low. You'd probably immediately throw up if you played Crysis 2.

It isn't 90? I wonder why Valve don't default to 90 given so many people have problems with the smaller FOV.

[edit]lol, guess it is 90.
Funny, I got motion sickness in HL2 still at 90 FOV, but Portal 2 has been fine.

I think Portals2 FOV is a bit wide. In the starting room, you can tell that everything is sort of a little too warped. And it does make me feel queasy. Right now, my head is hurting a wee bit from my earlier session. Makes me want to go have a lie down.

I wish I had enough confidence and feelings of self worth to start a thread to tell everyone I got nauseous. I'm glad someone else did because then I wouldn't have found out the FOV trick. Thank you.

Didn't Valve say they removed "walking on walls" gameplay because almost every game tester experienced some sort of motion sickness?
Oh my God. I hate you motion sick assholes.

there's def some fish eye effect going on in the ps3 version at least ..haven't had a chance to try the pc version thanks to psn being down. grr

I get insanely sick in HL2 set to 90. This is something to do with the movement in valve games. I do not get sick in any other FPS. And Portal 2 is already killing me. Shame. It might even be too smooth. In all valve games I feel like I'm on ice skates or something.

the really fast part where you shoot through a tube was too intense, I had to look away because it was making me dizzy

I think their crosshairs being somewhat difficult to see contributes to this.

I can't play Forsaken without becoming quickly and severely motion sick for this exact reason, but it was worse than walking on walls. There was simply no up or down.

I can handle crazy bobbing like Killzone 2, and I pumped hours upon hours into Mirror's Edge without the centre reticle, but something about Valve's games just gives me the business. Not seriously - I never get to hurling territory - but I always feel a little sick after playing and I can rarely get out without a headache. It happened first with Portal but I figured it was due to coming out of Portals upside-down and re-orienting, but then I played Half-Life and felt awful from just zooming around 2D planes at crazy late-90s FPS walking speeds. I think I'm getting used to it, though.

I recall getting a little woozy while playing Prey, and I never get motion sickness.

Its funny.

I actually felt a lot of motion sickness with Orange Box's PS3 port (I blame the then-shitty source motion blur implementation), but I found Portal 2 to be a huge improvement in this regard, and the framerate being solid was a huge bonus.

I get a little woozy with most FPSs. The first portal was pretty bad, has to play in very small chunks. Haven't had any problems with Portal 2 though...couple of moments when it caused a touch of dizzyness, but I just looked away and it was fine.

I never got motion sickness, but my head did hurt during certain puzzles where you have to portal in strange directions and you become disoriented when going through the portals. Recently the only game that gave me motion sickness was Minecraft. I turned off view bobbing and it fixed the problem.

The only time I felt funny is when you do those huge drops. I have a fear of heights and drops and it ws weird feeling that while playing. First game that ever did it to me

FOV really doesn't bug me that much, but I think the tiny FOV looks terrible. On games where it lets you set it I always crank it up to 90. Portal 2's FOV didn't really bug me. What is it on by default, 90? It looks fine to me, not as bad as HL2 did on it's starting 75 FOV.
