Possible Leaked Video of the "PSPhone" [Update: Clear Video Post 34]

If it had a keypad for easier text input instead of those weird slide pads I would at least consider this. And no I don't know how they would do to make that good.

There's just no way that thing is gonna be able to run PSP games. I don't understand why people are getting all hyped up about or saying "if it plays PSP games, then....". It's not gonna play PSP games, guys.

Hm. You really like to pimp PowerVR.
Erm, I don't know what internet you've been so far on, but on this one Lazy8s is the epitome of PowerVR pride ;p

This will be as popular as the PSPGo.

wrong for so, so many reasons.

#1
The PSPgo was a more expensive version of an existing PSP that broke compatibility with existing games. The REASON it was artificially more expensive than a PSP3000 is that sony had to build in a price increase to placate retailers. No one was all that eager to pay more for a device that did less.

The PSPhone on the other hand can be carrier subsidized, meaning it will be artificially CHEAPER than a stand alone device that's not a phone. you could give these away for $100 or even buy one get one free (as they do with the droid) and still be profitable.

#2 potential owners of the PSPgo routinely found themselves waiting for games to be ported to PSN after the UMDs hit retail, sometimes for games that never came. Current owners with lots of UMDs couldn't play any of them on the new device, potential owners were left to wonder if and when certain games would show up for the platform. Either way you look at it, PSPgo owners had less games to play than any other PSP owner.

The PSPhone should be capable of playing any game on the android market, in addition to whatever games S/E makes available for the Playstation app. So, more games to play than the average cellphone owner, with the option of superior controls.

There's no comparison between this and the Go whatsoever.

If minis are allowed the full run of the PSP hardware (and I think they are?) then as others have said, it's unlikely they could be emulated on this. Heck, because they have to be emulated even on PS3, apparently some of the games even have hitches there!

You probably have a better chance of seeing compliance with a new minis spec, funnily enough.

"Minis for sure" was a bit of a stretch on my part, but the Minis games do have requirements that they fit into a low spec of PSP use. The only documented requirement I've seen is 222Hz throttling, maybe's there's more? And then no special hardware access (anything but standard Save writing.) I guess it's possible that Sony would go without Minis or PS1 support, but if that's the case then I'm completely baffled by the point of this thing because making new games for it (even if it were a slew of PSP and PS1 ports that somehow were easy to do and fit the hardware better than emulation) would just not be economically viable for one handset, would it?

As a side note, there are Minis that choke on PS3? I've seen games with glitches, but I just assumed that was from some of the scaling and handling.

And yes, I agree that Sony should work out their hardware path. When they started launching these initiatives like Minis and NeoGeo Station and PC-Engine & PS1 before that, I thought maybe they had a plan for a multiplatform software strategy, but I'm not convinced yet that they do. (Case in point now: NeoGeo games come with two emulation wrappers, one for PSP with ad-hoc and one for PS3 with online, and you have to buy them separate.)

Possibly not directly related, but connected in some way. It'd make sense to use that driver.

I'm wondering if PlayStation Phone is Google's way of getting into gaming as much as it is an attempt by Ericsson to leverage the Sony brands? Google likes to partner with certain big companies to gain a foothold in markets (similar to how they partnered with T-Mobile and HTC for the first Android G1, or how currently Motorola is their premier Tablet partner and Verizon is part of the pilot program for ChromeOS.) Microsoft is already focused on 7 Phone, and Nintendo is out of the picture, but Sony is very interested in the mobile computing market from several vantage points. Sony also has a tiny spec of understanding of open architecture and formats and committees (though their dream is to control whatever they can) and so Google would know how to best use their executive experience between PlayStation and Blu-Ray and all that without losing control to a monolith. So Sony becomes the "pilot partner" for their entry into the gaming market with PS Phone, working with them to get a good marketplace and identify the level of performance expectation from game purchasers (helping Google identify ideal specs.) Others like EA and Gameloft would be involved too, same as how premier partners are not the only ones making Android or Chome devices, but Sony would have first crack and would set the direction.

It seems too big a project for Sony to not have leaked more than just hardware (and would Google enjoy working with a Japanese company with Japanese business practices for such a software-driven endeavor?) so probably I'm just dreaming. But if Google could get the "PlayStation" brand name identified with its devices, it could be good for them.

I'm positive there are more decent games for the Go than available on the android market. If the average cellphone owner includes iphone, then the 'more' is actually much(x100) less. I think both this and the PSP2 are clear indications Sony completely fails to understand the handheld market, and survives purely on the grace of Capcom.

There. is something wrong with that benchmark, the ANZU scored 65 on that same bench and im pretty sure the z1 would have at least equal processing power to the x12 which has an 800mhz CPU.

Source, plz.
