maybe its because people used to have to worry about survival, work hard to eat food. now people can just get government money or some shit and spend the rest of their time losing their minds because they have no hopes or aspirations left.

You know I have tattoos and piercings. These people take it to a completely different level but the thinking is the same, I assume. They just don't know how to stop or don't really have the discernment to see what's too much or not.

What the hell? Tribal cultures all around the world have used scarification, extreme piercings, and other body modifications for millennia. And this is a hobby for them.

obviously these were inspired by tribal practices, but I meant civilized society.

tattoos are just appearance customisation, some people like customising, hence lots of hairstyles, shoes, t-shirts, and tattoos.

these people are taking that to the extreme I guess. but why would they feel the need to? what are they aspiring to? to impress other people in this community they've stumbled upon? to distance themselves from "normal" folk? make a statement?

FACT - I have never seen anyone with gauges in any sort of professional capacity. The only time I have seen people with gauges working they happen to be handing me my suddenly-less-appetizing-than before (how is that possible) fast food.
