They are awesomness. No but seriously, as practice stated they allow you the ability to walk as if you're barefoot (no cushioning and raising of the heel). There's a durable rubbery material on the bottoms that can take running on harder rough surfaces.

Its not even in style really, its more function over style. But even then, I'm not brave enough to walk around with them in the mall or some shit, they're mainly meant for working out and trekking.
