Honestly, I think any man can set up a system and gain followers or members simply by creating a method of making it "exclusive", then setting up an "intake process" by which many are called but few eventually chosen for membership...and for which only those chosen know all the "secrets". Add a few elite's or people highly regarded in the community and you'll have people knocking on your door asking how to join.

Now, organizations like the Church of Scientology learned those lessons and have effectively set up an evil enterprise that has effectively milked people of billions of dollars over the last 50 or so years. I suspect we'll see more of it before we see less. and the established organizations will probably last a long, long time more. The natural influence and power that flows from them cannot be denied. Many of these organizations are good, worthwhile and upstanding. Some are not. You won't know until you're in...but you won't be in until...well yea.
