Power Pros Podcast - Chris Hoffman and Chris Slate (ex-NP) talk Nintendo

oLRTasF.jpg

Anyone give this a listen yet? The third episode just went up, figured it was worth a thread. Hoffman and Slate were responsible for the best years of Nintendo Power so I'm excited they're going to regularly talk about the company again.

I'll post impressions once I've gone through the episodes; here's hoping this is up there with NVC and RFN!

You're welcome. Has anyone actually gone through any of the episodes yet? Would love to hear thoughts! I'm hoping to check some out during my commute tonight.

So I'm halfway through the second episode at the moment and am certainly enjoying it. It's a touch dry and I really want to hear more unique segments and more personality from the hosts, but it's pretty balanced (maybe not harsh enough in spots) and moves well. Definitely worth a listen, especially if you ever cared about NP when it was at its best. Chris Slate, in particular, goes all the way back to Game Players!

So unless some other people start posting here this is the last time I'm going to converse with myself regarding this podcast... Maybe I did a bad job with the thread title? Regardless, finished the third episode and thought it was the best one yet. It was funny and wasn't filled with doom-and-gloom like most Nintendo E3 stuff has been (not that they didn't deserve some of that). It wasn't too far in the other direction either, I found it pleasant and insightful. Really think this podcast is worth listening to, hope some others feel the same whether they post about it or not.

Thanks for sharing. I'm really enjoying it so far. It's nice to have another well produced Nintendo podcast.
Agreed, and it has only gotten better each week. Episode 4 was great! I hope they bring on other NP writers and guests in the future, develop some more regular bits, and continue to grow.
Wow! Was wondering what happened to Chris Slate...loved his handiwork since the days of Game Players...
Me too! He's great. Both of them write for MacLife now.

GAF!! Have you all been listening to this podcast?!? It's fantastic!

I listen to a ton of gaming podcasts, many Nintendo-related....and I think this may be my favorite. It's such a great, entertaining, and informative show every single week. I can honestly say I look forward to each Wednesday now because of Power Pros. If either Chris browses GAF, great work on this podcast! And keep it up. I love it.

New episode released today is focused on Nintendo and their third party issues. Can't wait to listen later!

I've kept up, listened to the new episode this morning. I thought the news segment was solid but the third party discussion was a little weaker than I expected. Not a lot of insight there, though there really isn't much to say on the subject that hasn't already been said.

Really enjoyed that one, solid news segment and I always love to hear people wax poetic about the GB. Wish the segment was longer and more in-depth, though that might just be because I lived through all of that. Probably a good primer for younger listeners.

I think the only problem I have with this podcast is that it's too short every week! I wouldn't mind it being 30 minutes longer.

This podcast continues to be a highlight of my week. This week's episode talked about games to play while dealing with the Great Nintendo Drought of 2015. It's been a pretty lean year for Nintendo fans, all things considered. Another good episode.

Loved this week's episode and thought their SM mainline rankings were unorthodox... so I went and made my own! Which is equally crazy!

1. Super Mario 3D Land
2. Super Mario Galaxy
3. Super Mario 64
4. Super Mario Sunshine
5. Super Mario World
6. Super Mario Bros 3
7. New Super Mario Bros 2
8. Super Mario Bros
9. Super Mario Bros 2
10. Super Mario Land
11. Super Mario Land 2: The 6 Golden Coins
12. Super Mario Bros The Lost Levels
13. New Super Mario Bros
(NR) New Super Mario Bros Wii
(NR) Super Mario Galaxy 2
(NR) New Super Mario Bros U
(NR) Super Mario 3D World

NR = No ranking because I (sadly) haven't played enough of them.

This remains my favorite Nintendo podcast. I went ahead and gave them a positive review on iTunes. More Gaffers need to check this show out!

In fact, I'm gonna' go listen to today's episode right now!

Just downloaded the NX features episode because of this thread; pretty good podcast! Definitely gonna listen to new episodes as they come out! I wrote my own responses to the topic, because I'm a chump!

  • Touch Screen controls - Nice to have, but AFAIK, touch screens are pretty expensive. Also, minus Mario Maker, nothing recently has really meaningfully used the touch screen.
  • Stereoscopic 3D - Nope. Not many people use it, and even fewer games use it in any meaningful way. It's expensive, and the 3D craze has died down.
  • Motion Controls - Wii Remote? Please, let that thing die. However, the gyroscope is great. Keep that in the controllers.
  • Dual Screens - It's a nice luxury, but it's not normally used in a meaningful enough way to justify its cost. The gamepad is great, but it doesn't need to happen again.
  • Cameras - nope nope nope. Has anyone ever actually used those cameras? They're poor quality and don't lend to gameplay in any way I can think of. Just unnecessary money wasting.
  • Web Browser/Media Apps - Put that in! The Wii U web browser is really good, and Netflix, Amazon and Hulu are really quality services.
  • Backwards Compatibility - I love this feature. However, judging by Iwata's statements about the NX, it seems that they are trying to create a new ecosystem for all of their future projects. If that means I can't play Wii/Wii U games anymore, than I am willing to take the bullet.
  • Streetpass/Spotpass - I have had fun with Streetpass, but if you're not at school or a con, it's hard to actually find people who are Streetpassing. Maybe make it a mobile thing? Not essential, but nice.
  • NFC - yeah. I mean, amiibo prints money. Why wouldn't they?
  • Miiverse - It may be a cesspool of small children with poor senses of humor, but that's why I love it. Keep it! And maybe actually give us those custom communities, eh?
  • Physical Media - I think so, yeah. I like boxes. Even if it's cartridge based, that's fine. The world isn't ready for digital only yet.

So basically you want either something very similar to what Sony/MS are doing, or something completely new shedding most of the trappings of the past. I think I certainly agree with the latter. And you're not a chump, we're going to get this podcast going on GAF no matter what. One day we'll even rival the Vita Council of Twelve!

Who is the host with the old man voice? He's so awful...always so grumpy and contrarian. He also comes off as disrespectful to the other host, and he's constantly interrupting him and putting him down.

The Hoff? It's all in good fun, I really like their rapport to be honest. Thought the most recent episode was awesome, great recap and fun [if obvious] "GOTY" lists. Would've been cool if they talked about some non-Nintendo platforms, but there are a million podcasts to get that type of content.

Well, it's 2016 so I thought I'd give this thread a bump. Nintendo fans, you should really check out this podcast. I really love it.

They just posted their first show of the year, which goes into an overview of Nintendo in 2016. I haven't gotten around to it yet, but I'm sure it's a great listen, as always.

Thanks for the bump. I'll add it to my podcast rotation as soon as I manage to finish up the Giantbomb GOTY podcasts (which is going a tad slow due to my cute newborn...).

Congrats Raitaro! Possibly the best excuse ever to get a little slack with the podcasts. Always warms my heart to see this thread bumped, especially when new people discover the show. It really is a great listen just about every week. Excited to dig in to the new episode on my commute home tonight!

Newest episode just went up, it's Chris Slate's last show. Sad, but the show will continue in reconfigured form. Wonder where he's going... hope it's somewhere good!
