Or is it a locking panel to protect his bat-chastity?

I don't like the helmet, I don't really mind the suit, but they're going to fight like a floaty CGI mess, aren't they?

Not sure why the kept the mouths a completely faceless helm would have went better with the design they have either way though can't say I'm a fan. Something like the Gokaiger helmets would have been cool.

This just has the cynical smear of Transformers all over it so far.

While i'm not a gigantic Marvel fan, there's something to be said about the good compromise they were able to make between staying true to source material and updating certain elements to appeal to a mass audience. I get that spandex tights and capes don't fly on the big screen and they have to make changes, but there's a huge difference between "updating a design" and "over designing". It's difference between a studio that says "These original concepts are already cool, but let's give them broad appeal" and one that says "These original concepts are entirely lame, we absolutely have rework everything". One's excited about the project, the other just seems like it wants to be making a different movie.

I think they could lose the mouths if they're going with a more "iron man" kind of design. It doesn't look too bad right now. Definitely could be more polished up though.

You know, with how detailed the suits are, it's going to be interesting to see how bad the $10 toys look with lower details and missing paint applications.

That's the main reason why Power Rangers always had pretty simple designs :P

These designs totally miss the point of the originals. It's like they don't even get the concept of the show. And what makes it a real shit show is the boob plates and heels. What the fuck.

I bet they won't even do any martial arts. Just punching walls and throwing stuff at each other. Maybe some chest lasers. They will probably have guns. Not Sentai-like weapons, but bullet using AKs.

lol overreacting

So is this supposed to be camp or is spandex not okay? I'm so confused.
It's not that complicated. Spandex is camp but people would moan if they turned up in the quality of outfit used in the 90's. This is Power Rangers not a Weta Workshop-catered Hollywood production. If this doesn't match up to people's 90's Kids™ nostalgia then that's too bad, it's for kids.

If you want a better Power Rangers experience, watch Kamen Rider.

Do not like the new suits at all. They could have just went with something like this, which is both updated for 2016 and still retains the original's feel:

That looks cool as fuck. I want that on the big screen not this discount Iron Man crap. Why is the world so cruel??

I watch both Sentai and Rider weekly. I wouldn't give up one for another in ten thousand years. But I understand that realistically you can't make a big theatrical movie (theatrical specials notwithstanding) with either of them, unless you're going for some DTV tier low investment low returns thing, and that's just not how cinemas work these days. But I also don't think that, for example, MCU costumes aren't also campy as all get out. I think if you're making a movie about Power Rangers, you just have to embrace the camp at the end of the day, and not try to grow out of it. The designs in the opening post are just bad. Disfigured helmets, weird shape decisions, lack of proper division and attraction areas, it's a mess is what it is. Why is it like that? Probably because they can't let go of Zyuranger designs. And they should. They totally should. That's my point. Leave MMPR look alone. MCU movies certainly wouldn't work any worse if the pattern on Iron Man's chest is somehow different.

My main gripe with the new costumes are they are too vein-ey. Like weird monster penis suits.

It's probably on purpose (the veiny aspect, not the fact that it looks like shit):

According to director Dean Israelite, the costumes are actually “translucent extraterrestrial armor that crystallizes around their bodies.” He continues: "Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made. You can’t win everyone over, but we are trying to appeal to a more mature audience and gain new fans.”

There's your explanation for the boob armor and heels.

the "mature audience" are the ones that grew up watching the power rangers you imbecile.

Yeah, this is just a series where the creators on the American side have no idea what they are aiming for. The only 'mature audience' that would give this property the time of day are original fans who would be fine with some camp at least.

On the other hand Toei know their audiences and exactly what they want to create, and their style of suits still work for what they are.

My personal favorites will always be the Shinkenger suits.
