I need more in my life. Someone link me to some 5k word long blog post about why megaforce was bad. I want detailssss
Super Megaforce suffers from three issues:
- It's not as good as Gokaiger, the most important of its two source shows
- It tries to combine two shows that have nothing to do with each other
- The writing and acting is dire
First up, MegaForce and Super MegaForce are adaptations of Tensou Sentai Goseiger and Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger, with the same cast shared across both adaptations. Goseiger's theme is about angels descending from their version of heaven to protect the Earth, using trading card-based henshin items. Gokaiger is an anniversary Sentai series, about alien pirates collecting the powers of previous Sentai teams, in the form of action figure-style keys.
No connection there.
And Gokaiger is amazing. Not only is the primary cast charismatic as hell, but it firmly understood what is means to be an anniversary show. Every episode had the Gokaigers learning from one of the previous Sentai, in an episode themed to mirror that Sentai roughly. As an added bonus, the Gokaiger's were led through this point by a guest star from that respective season. Seeing the costumes and actors return was just magical. Some episodes were better than others, but at least they tried.
The problem is Japan is an island nation and Sentai is relatively important to Toei/Bandai, so it was far easier to bring back at least one actor per Sentai. Saban is cheap as hell and the actors for previous Power Ranger shows either are spread out, not willing to return, or unwilling to return for the chump change offered. So, we're already stumbling. Then you have to account for the fact that Gokaiger had 51 episodes to get through everything. Super MegaForce was less than half that.
So we had an anniversary series that literally gave you a great template to work with. We got... one episode with something classic Rangers in costume with helmets off. Jungle Fury and Samurai cameos during the show. And... dodgy CG otherwise. Dire.
Second, Goseiger and Gokaiger were adapted with the same cast. The problem is the characters don't really match up from season to season. Alata was the fresh-faced, kind-hearted Red of Goseiger, but Captain Marvelous is every bit the headstrong leader the name suggests. Agri (GoseiBlack) is the cool older brother of the Goseiger, but his closest color counterpart is Doc (GokaiGreen), who is literally the joke character of his show.
So you have situations where they have to bridge the gap, like making Jake an outgoing jokester, to cover both the cool MegaForce Black and the goofy Super MegaForce Green. Or when team nerd Noah suddenly decides that sword-fighting is really important in Super MegaForce, because that was a huge defining trait of GokaiBlue.
Third, to deal with the writing and acting, let's look at the Red.
Troy is a goddamn black hole. He was okay for MegaForce, but Captain Marvelous has swag, and Troy just couldn't add up. I don't think this is down to actor Andrew Gray, I honestly just think they gave him nothing to work with. The character is the anchor for your anniversary show and
there was nothing there. Everyone one else had something, even if it was inconsistent from season to season. Troy? Nothing. Cardboard with a face.
GokaiSilver is a goddamn Super Sentai fanboy who is excited whenever they meet a classic team member! Orion is In Space's Zhane without charm. Shameful.
It was just the highests highs to the lowest lows. Even taken as a Power Ranger anniversary alone, it doesn't match up to the In Space finale or Forever Red. It's bereft of life and joy.
