Four of the seven seasons start with only three rangers and fill out the five over time. This show and Jungle Fury are particularly big on it as they need the special rangers to reach the full five.

They do it for character development purposes, it works great especially when the initial actors are better then your traditional Power Ranger.

I know JDF is the most popular ranger from that era, but come on. SOme of the stuff to justify him being gone (and the filler in season to make up for the run time) was just insane because of it.

Producers wanted to bring in someone to generate fan interest, Tommy was their best bet (they almost never got him), hell it got me to watch...but he's also not the sole focus of the series, the new team was.

Even if those excuses were lame, it doesn't impact the series as much as it people think. He was a treat to long time fans.

The evil white ranger story suffered more than this.

Spent the last 5 hours watching Ninja Storm. That was honestly one of the most fun things I've done in a long time. It was my favorite season before and it still is now. That said, I'm going to probably give this marathon a rest for awhile. I'm going to be sleeping through most of Dino Thunder and I wasn't a huge fan of it anyways. I'll pop back in off and on but not for long stretches like I did tonight.

I'd argue RPM is also a 5 man team since Dillon immediately joins afterwards and the opening is more of a multiparter that leads to them being 5. Though the zord is always 3.

Abarekiller isn't even am ally until the last 5 episodes. He has an arc, a compelling arc. Instead to get around the lack of footage of him actually helping, they simply just... Never have the white ranger show up after his arc is finished. He personifies the trope of the 6th ranger never doing anything IMO. He just looks cool.
