I need to watch this.

AHAHAHAHAHAHA

Where did you get that the agency
knows that John is the bomber? I don't think they do. As far as they know John retired in 1975 and his time machine was decommissioned. But the machine failed to decommission and he didn't report it, so he keeps using it illegally to "prevent future deaths" as the Fizzle Bomber.

That's not how I saw it. I thought that
John is the reason that the organization exists in its current capacity. Without the fizzle bomber, the organization doesn't get the funding it needs. Without the major threat, there's no need for such an extreme solution. The Ted Price looking guy at one point even hinted at the fizzle bomber being a necessary evil before John knew it was just himself from the future. I was under the impression that John was basically a rogue agent that only Ted Price really knew about.

this movie was the greatest mind fuck I've had in a recent while

Does robertson know that john will be the fizzle bomber and doesn't stop him? That is what it seemed like. So john turns into the bomber b/c of his breakdown/all those lives he saved? Ending as crazy yo

that's what I got. Various clues are given to suggest it.

Right,
he definitely hints at it, but I don't think it's clear cut. Even if Robertson knew it was probably his personal agenda and not an agency-wide conspiracy.

I've seen Looper and Twelve Monkeys (forgot to mention them, and I've been meaning to rewatch TM for a long time, I barely remember anything from it). I'll check the others out, thanks!

Also interested in any good movies that have a time travel element to them, without being the center focus of the plot, for example: Star Trek (2009), Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban, Midnight in Paris, Howl's Moving Castle.

You should watch The Returner.

What an amazing movie. Loved it. One of the better insane twist movies I've seen in a long time, and probably the best time travel movie ever.

Loved that film, Ethan was great but Sarah Snook was magnificent what a talent. Still hurts my head thinking about it though.

Really enjoyed this but yeah, definitely need a rewatch.

She was fantastic, although I never bought her
as a man, if that makes sense. I honestly thought she was a woman from the moment she walked into a bar, maybe just a little more masculine than most.

Still, she was great. Her scenes when she had to
deal with the reality of "becoming" a man were wrenching.

Love how
I'm my own Grandpa
is used.

That song was actually
too on-the-nose for me and kinda ruined the "twist".

One thing I didn't like was how it was implied that hawk kept going back after retirement, to save more lives. But we only saw him really care about the fizzle bomber.

Just watched this, and this was my thought exactly. It didn't help that the trailers for the movie seemed to be almost exclusively from the last 40 minutes or so. So, during the first hour I was wondering if I had rented the wrong movie or something. Definitely worth the setup, though.

yeah the first half seems like an entirely different movie and then it all makes sense.

Just redboxed this.

Really good movie, probably now my favorite from last year. Just wish I knew the answer.

Which came first? Chicken, Egg, or Rooster? Meaning, where did Jane/John come from if they are their own parent?

That's exactly it, they never actually came from anywhere. They're a closed loop. It's why the movie's called what it is, it's an example of a predestination paradox.

I watched this last night. Was really predictable but I'm not sure that detracts from it. It's rare to see sci-fi as clever as this. I was partly hoping it would not go the way it did, so it might surprise me, but I can't imagine a different possibility for these characters.

Anyone else figure out exactly what was going to happen as soon as the new face was unveiled, like five minutes in? I don't think I've ever before known exactly what would happen in a movie before the title even rolled.

it's a loop. Ethan hawke left baby, baby grew up to be girl, girl went to space program and got rejected, met the pre-ethan hawke male version of herself and they fell in love, got pregnant with her own baby and man left her, her baby is taken away and meanwhile she begins process to become male, the male version of her that left her is now doing adventures and gets face burned, turns into ethan hawke with face reconstruction, steals baby, brings her into the game, ethan hawke finds himself as psychotic bomber, kills himself, continues loop

I too just finished watching the movie and my mind is blown. REALLY did not see it coming which surprised me more. I was close in suspecting what was going on but when I found out
they were all the same person...wow

Definitely a sleeper hit.

I didn't realize this was just All You Zombies with Ethan Hawke in it. Could've done without the cheesy terrorism subplot, but cool movie nonetheless. I'm a sucker for time travel stuff.

I know something was gonna be weird when Snook called Ethan a "son of a bitch" at the bar and Ethan was like "ha, that's funny". I knew they were going to be related, but no where near what eventually played out. Haha.

Just watched this and I have two thoughts:

We have achieved peak time travel paradox movie and
sora is everyone
.

Also, great performances. I got my wife to watch with me and almost stopped when the first few minutes looked all Timecop. Figured I'd watch by myself later. But then the story started...

Just watched this and boy am I glad I didn't decide to take a peek at the Wikipedia article before doing so like I sometimes do, getting spoiled for this movie would suck pretty hard. It was pretty good, halfway through the movie I was pretty sure I was going to miss the twist but I guess the movie's pretty thorough about making sure the viewer knows what's going on by the end.

Did
John know who the Time Agent was when he said "you're ready to know who I am"? I don't feel like he had enough information by that point to figure it out.

Just saw this movie. To say my mind is blown is an understatement.

And here I thought Oldboy was full of mind-fucks. It's a goddamn walk in the park compared to this.

So just caught this. I thought it was pretty rad.

However, my interpretation of the ending is that
Hawke became the fizzle bomber and that was all predestined as the big bombing needed to happen (or at least presented as WOULD happen) such that the temporal beureau would exist in the firm that it did. Like the fizzle bomber existing as a long running target allowed them to actually exist to save lives with the agency as a whole.

Thing is, I read the wiki entry and it sort of refers to a series of events that takes place after Hawke kills the fizzle bomber. What was he exactly doing, to what end? Was he using the machine to save lives? Why the big New York bombing then if that were the case?

Well. It felt a little bit full as far as story. 3Some editing could have delivered the clever movie they tried to sell.

I feel bad that I spoiled it myself with " oh I bet x." But the movie seemed it could have been a solid one. Just needed a slower pace.

I'd be interested to see how the ---- community took this film..

Left me thinking about it. But not in the memento way.
