PREY 2017 is damn good!

Finally picked this up for $30 and I'm only a few hours in but it's damn good folks. The demo didn't do anything for me but I'm so glad I decided to give it another shot. It really does feel like a true successor to Bioshock, with a little Dead Space and Deus Ex thrown in for good measure. The level design is amazing and the game just drips with atmosphere. The electronic score also gives the game a great momentum and cool sci-fi feeling.

I'm just really enjoying my time with this, but I shouldn't have doubted Arkane, they're probably the most underrated games studio out there right now imo. Just to note, I'm playing on Pro and it definitely makes a difference. The graphics are much closer to PC and the controls definitely feel more fluid than when I played it on my XBO. I felt Dishonored 2 on Pro looked and played way better as well so it's not a surprise.

Kind of despised it myself to be honest. Really loved the morphing enemies idea, but then the bigger guys show up who are just massive sponges, then they dump so many of them on you at once at points that I just stopped playing since I never had the ammo let alone survivability. Felt like the game was punishing me for not searching every single crack of every room, despite being pretty thorough.

Sitting in my backlog :(

For those who dont know, the PS4 version was patched a few weeks back so its good on all platforms now.

I love me some Arkane goodness. If you liked it and want more, look into Dishonored 2.

This is how I know I love the game, because I usually hate that shit too, but I'm loving looking in every nook and cranny and checking every single room from top to bottom. I'm addicted to finding and looting everything I can and then recycling it and turning it into ammo and other shit I need, haha. Have not had issues with the enemies yet but we'll see I guess. I've been able to sneak by a lot of the bigger ones so far.

I dunno I just couldn't get into it might try again someday but damn I am drowning in games as it is and then I go and play a 10 year old game I have completed 5 times already.

i don't want to hijack your thread OP but if you're into FP games and have some spare money get dishonored 2, much better level design and much much better game IMO, back on topic the game is good, i am still salty we never got the Prey 2 game that was announced at first all these years ago :(

It's fantastic. It would've been my leading GOTY contender if the story wasn't so weak but I still enjoyed the world and atmosphere despite that.

Best game I've played this year easily.

It's about to be dethroned by D:OS2, but hey second place ain't so bad.

Amazing game. Loved every minute of it and it was definitely refreshing to play something that rewarded exploration and had so much optional content / multiple ways to play. It's probably my GOTY so far. This game deserves to be played by anyone interested in sci-fi, exploration and games like Half-Life and Deus Ex.

...I've played Dishonored 2, I say so in my op. I love it. I love this too.

I am glad this game has legs, late adopters and people that are loving it to the extreme. I was bored to tears and though it was cliche ( that ending) and got none of the magic I had playing Bioshock on its release, everyone has different tastes and experiences, but it was at least clear that it was well made. Arcane does fine work mechanically and I dig their art direction, I hope more people get exposed to this game ,despite the middling reviews, as the price goes down/word of mouth increases and fall in love with it too. I am excited to see what Arkane does next ,regardless of it ends up being my cup of tea. Prey is not a game for the masses, but those it does strike a chord with love it, I totally rec checking it out if you are on the fence as it could be a pleasant surprise.

To be honest the main moment that actually stopped me from playing was a bit odd. I came back to an area I'd been to before and it was littered with super powerful enemies and the quest said something about
kill or evade some special enemy
but the area itself was just flooded with spawns despite that on top of it. I had to try run my way through since I was going to be detected at the entrance but whatever was going on continued into the next area.

I actually really enjoyed a number of things about the game, but hitting walls like that have the ability to turn me off a game real fast. Kinda wish there was a lower difficulty for just breezing through since I was liking the story.

Finished it last week. Fantastic game--even with the all backtracking. Makes me want to go and play bioshock 2 (the only one I havent played) and system shock 2

Wolfenstein: TNO
Prey
Doom
Titanfall 2
Dishonored 2

The 5 modern single player FPS behemoths. Prey is absolutely outstanding and way, way better than every Bioshock game which is probably the most closely related product in recent years.

I will definitely give you that the story is weak and doesn't have that hook that pulls you in immediately that most gamez like this do. But I've come to appreciate the low-key beginning to the game and how things gradually reveal themselves.

Does this also have quicksave/quickload set up like Dishonored 2? Dedicating separate buttons to both was a damn revelation, every game should copy that feature moving forward.

The good news is their next game will be out in a few weeks at a budget price (Dishonored: Death of the Outsider)

This may be the truest statement, from top to bottom, that I've ever read. You have good taste sir.

Completely wasn't interested, but then I started to watch Joseph Anderson's review of it and he said the game was a "mix between Deus Ex and System Shock 2" and "better than System Shock 2/Bioshock games" and I had to check it out.

I mostly loved it. I really liked the loot loop, and the beginning of the story. I LOVED the world that they built, the space station feels incredibly authentic and it's lovely to explore every nook and cranny. The story though really runs out of steam at the end, and the loot loop kinda evaporates. I found myself just rushing through areas at the end because I could sense the game was almost over and I didn't need to engage in the loop anymore.

It left a better first impression than positive feelings for the end, but I really hope there's a sequel. Even though apparently the sales were bad, so that's probably not happening.

I wanted to love Prey but ended up hating it and bailed early with the "quitting" ending. Even the weakest enemies do a shitload of damage, appear out of nowhere, and are nearly impossible to shoot. But I can deal with that. What I couldn't abide was painstakingly clearing out a room, doing a 5-minute mission in the next room, and then coming back to the room I just cleared and having it suddenly repopulated with even tougher enemies. The whole game turned into high-damage bullet-sponges about 3/4 of the way through, at which point I pulled the ripcord.

I like the idea and general story, but I wouldn't have dropped $30 on it knowing what I know now.

Yep.
Overlooked and often unfairly criticized for "replacing the canceled Prey 2", but it was the most surprising game I ended up loving this year.

I gave it a chance barely out of appreciation for Arkane Studios even if I was mostly disinterested in it.
Turns out it's arguably the best immersive sim in years.

Not flawless, sure, but pretty damn good. Better than any Bioshock game ever was, for sure.
The level design is mostly outstanding and there are a lot of other less evident qualities.

You've echoed a lot of my thoughts exactly so far. Hopefully I'll at least finish Prey, even if it does end up running out of steam, which is more than I can say for Bioshock. I really enjoyed that game but never cared to finish the last couple hours of it, and I finished Bioshock 2 and Infinite.

I really liked Prey when I was playing it, but something else got my attentiom when I was in the arboretum area. Never got back to it due to the repetitive encounter designs and scavenging gameplay loops. Nothing felt like a threat after a bit, so it lost the tension that made it so enticing early on. The level design was pretty tight though.

Also, it's a game people will like more with age. Why? Because the loading screens will get less and less with time. I actually like backtracking in games like Metroid Prime. But there aren't any loading screens, that game is made to keep you in the world the whole time. But the loading in Prey, at least on a vanilla PS4, is atrocious. And it's especially bad when you know you're going to have to hit 2 or 3 loadtimes to get to your next quest item/area. I _hope_ some of that is just some technical issues that can get fixed with a patch, but with the lackluster sales I kinda doubt that.

It's everyone's GOTY after the first 10 hours... After that not so much.

idk, I did just about every sidequest and loved it till the very end. Something about that game just hit all the right buttons for me. Maybe I just got lucky and selected the right powers and stuff too to make it more enjoyable. Felt awesome in the end being able to just combo enemies and chain different abilities together. Went from feeling cautious / scared to feeling like a god.

I ignored it when it came out but picked it up on sale for the PC.

I am seriously blown away. As a Bioshock fan, it hits all the right notes that makes me love these games.

I think I am nearing the end and I get some of the criticism.

It has a Bioshock 2 vibe where they have to weigh the fact that you have become so overpowered with throwing so many enemies at you.

To me, I am enjoying this huge world with a fantastic story and great combat.

I went ahead and bought it for my PS4 Pro so I can play it in my living room.

To those starting out, do yourself a favor and use the Major Slack non blind walkthrough.
No wasting time deciding where to go and what to upgrade.

Excellent game, but pacing towards the end becomes a car crash with the big enemies wandering around. I rushed myself through areas to finish the game because it got too hard.
