Pricing and Bundles for Wii U Gamecube Adapter Revealed

I bit confused with all the controller options for Wii U.

Is the GC controller mandatory or just preferred way of playing SSM?

If preferred, the bundle with game, adapter and controller seems like good deal.

Mostly for the competitive players it's a requirement. Nintendo seems to be really pushing it as a competitive fighter.

For most people it's a preference.

just preferred. and yes, it's a good deal, and one I'll capitalize on.

Any confirmation if it will work with the Wavebird?

I mean, I don't see why it won't, but Nintendo has done stranger (Read: dumber) things before.

the Wavebird uses a receiver that plugs into the controller ports. there's no way for the games or adapters to know the difference between the receiver and a regular GC pad's wire. it will work just like it worked on BC-enabled Wiis.

will probably get the bundle. I don't "need" another GCN controller.. but it's a smash logo controller so why not..

long story short... GCN dpad is godlike, and most hardcore players have been using the GCN controller since the Smash competitive scene started (with Melee).

releasing Smash without GCN controls available is like releasing a Street Fighter console title that doesn't work with arcade sticks.

Ah gotcha. Doesn't sound like something I need then with no experience with the game. Day 1 it is.

Well said. I actually came across some kids on campus playing Project M with Pro Controllers on their Wii U and I tried using it and got stomped to which guy and his buddy start making snide comments about using a Nunchuck for a beginner. I asked for a GC controller and they let me use it. 4 stocked both the guy and his friend. GC controller is legit lol.

So is Smash definitely coming out this year on Wii U? With the 3DS version coming out so late, I kind of assumed the console version would slip into 2015.

I hope they have one in white. It can be so hard to find white and light coloured electronics.

I have a white Wii U and several Japanese white Gamecube controllers.

If the controller they're using on the stream are the new ones, they only have the six-foot cable. Majorly disappointing if true

edit: Doesn't look like the ones they're using are the new ones, actually. On the stream they're silver, and all the pics of the Smash edition ones are black.

Will withhold disappointment for now

I don't even have a Wii U yet but I'll definitely pick up a controller or two for my GC. I just hope the build quality is as good as the original.

If the GC controller supports other Virtual Console/Wii U games, sure I'll drop 100 bucks on smash. If it's only for one game, though... I'll stick to the Classic Controller.

if the game releases this year it'll likely drop a week or two before Christmas. if you want the bundle cheap just way until boxing day and buy it at target for like $15.

I'm so gonna buy these up. I broke so many GameCube controller analog sticks playing Melee and Brawl. Earlier this year I got a new White one and its my only GCN controller without a busted stick. Gonna get the bundle, so I'll need two more for four players, and maybe another two as spares. lol

I have two wired GC controllers and three Wavebirds, so I'm all set. I've no interest in Smash Bros though, so hoping the controller is compatible with the console overall and can play VC games. I know the system has is soft mods able via the original Wii mode, would love to get my GC games on there and play with a GC controller. It's the only thing keeping me from packing away my Wii U.

do you think the GCN controllers will now work in Wii mode? for the games that support it, of course.

I'm getting the bundle anyway but that would just be awesome.

Hopefully I'll have enough money to spend on the controller and adapter by the end of the year. I need to feel the perfection the Gamecube controller is one more time. And smash is the perfect game for it.

Wait, do I need bother the controller and the adapter? If so, why wouldn't they them together to begin with?

No. They'd have to make Wii mode aware that GC controllers are on the USB bus.

It's probably technically possible to make some sort of software shim.. it wouldn't be easy, though.

One adapter works with 4 controllers,c'mon trollers people already own and have tuned for tourneys. Also keeps new GCN controller cost down.

You need the adapter if you want to use original wired GC controllers. The new Smash Bros. doesn't require them.

The PDP ones are actually just Wii Classic Controllers with a GC style shell and button layout.

The adapter doesn't come with any GC controllers because plenty of the people they're selling it to will already have ones they intend to use.

The bundle is a bit expensive but i'll probably get one, out of my two GC controllers only one is pristine while the other had the analog rubber "eaten" by my sister back in the days.
And i wanted a smash-branded one anyway.

Pricing seems pretty fair. 30 is on par with what Cube controllers have been costing, and 20 for the adapter isn't bad. I'll definitely be going for that bundle!

Wouldn't most competitive players already have a GC controller? They'd just get the adapter.

Hell, I still have 4 wired and 4 wavebirds sitting in a shelf somewhere.
Most do, but the things wear out fast when you play Smash often, and I know people are always looking for new ones.

I actually have a surplus built up at this point too, but I still can't resist the Smash branded controller. :3

Though I was pretty surprised at Best Buy by how good the pro controller felt.

This is an essential question. I'll be so mad if they don't
You can buy extenders on eBay for like $1

And regarding the GC adaptor, it's so cool they're doing it. But as much as I love the GC controller, i'm going to adapt to (slowly I'm sure) the Pro Controller, so I have muscle memory unity with the 3DS. And, also, I do really like the Pro controller. Not as good as the GC, but enough for me to pack away the cords and keep things simple.

Still tempting though

I wonder if Wii mode is going to support this peripheral. I mean must be easy to do it.

For the record, though I am getting the 100 USD bundle, I am definitely playing this game with the Wii classic Controller Pro; best octagonal gate out of any of them, plus digital shoulders. Gonna try to get at least one other GCN pad other than the bundled one though; I want to have enough saved to make sure my kids' kids can play Sunshine and Starfox Assault.
