Happy Birthday, Prince!

I'd forgotten all about you, mate. Sorry.

Darling Nikki, is one Prince track that has stuck in my head since Purple Rain launched so i guess to me it's a classic. Haven't heard anything by him for at least a decade though.

There's minute and a half long song previews on iTunes. Looks like he's on Spotify too. But he also isn't on YouTube and kicked UncleSporky's dog so I don't know how to feel about him.

Dude is amazing live. Long live Prince, GOAT.

I just checked and he's on Spotify so stop wasting your time and go listen to everything he's ever made.

I lot of his best stuff is on there, but you're still missing plenty, including his best albums of the 90s and 00s, The Gold Experience and 3121 respectively.

There was a story about this recently... a local news team (twin cities) went and listened to his new song or album or whatever a couple months ago. And the reporter who was a 20 something woman was asked by Prince "how do kids get music these days" and she responded.. Spotify and described it to him. He turned to his guys and said... how long would it take to get our music on there?

So I think it is a new thing for his music to be on there... glad he actually followed through.

A genius on par with Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, John Coltrane...

Kanye feels like the new prince in a way. Both abrasive, both iconoclastic, both incredibly stubborn.

I <3 Prince.

I'm gonna go with Tambourine from around the world in day because I'm hip and cool and more people need to hear it.

Went to see him during his residency at the 02 arena in London. Still one of the best concerts I've ever been to. The way he and the band could be so on point and the way he could work the crowd was incredible. The fact that he was able to write his songs, play each instrument and produce them by himself for most of his career, releasing over 700 songs, 32 studio albums making material for himself and others under different pen names is still impressive to this day. There'll never be another mainstream artist like him.

If you really want to know if he's had an impact on the industry, look at any CD cover or warning label next to a digital download. See a label that says 'Parental Advisory Explicit Content'? You can thank Prince.

There are a few Miles + Prince recordings floating around - very rare to find but they exchanged tapes at one point.

Wow, crazy to think he is 3 years from 60. Too many good songs to really pick a favorite, but "When Doves Cry" will always stick with me. I was 7 when it released and catching the video on MTV was such an event every fucking time it came on. Great song, great video and a great time in my life!

Happy Birthday Prince!

You should more properly thank Tipper Gore. Not that it's a good thing either way.

I support artists who don't have sticks up their asses about this sort of thing. I've bought tons of albums which were released completely free to listen to online. When I find myself listening to it a few times, I have to say, "you know what, this is great, I'm going to go ahead and pick this up." Good on them.

And often I'll hear random music on youtube that makes me interested enough in the artist to look up more of their stuff and I end up buying it.

Those people have earned my money, not the ones who throw up barriers. There's enough music out there that any barriers to listening to anything specific these days are enough to make people look elsewhere.

Heck, look at this thread. How can we even talk about how great he is without any examples? People resorting to digging on random sites like jukebo.com? Come on.

This is just shameful. Having to reminisce about a great artist by posting Muppet clips.

AND it's blocked in my country (the US).

90% of his discography is on Spotify.
Your complaints are irrelevant.

I respect the guy as a top form musician, but there isn't one song he had that I like. I also respect him staying in the twin cities and being active here in MN.

Going through Prince's spotify list.

It's a very good selection, but it's missing a handful of great albums:

Diamonds and Pearls
Emancipation
The Gold Experience
3121

Happy Bday to Prince Nelson Rogers. I will be bumping his best album out of his godtier discography....
The Gold Experience

.....where in the hell is the promised Purple Rain 30th Anniversary Remastered Deluxe Edition we were promised over 2 years ago!

Now having gotten that off my chest, I will say I have EVERY extended version/remixed single Prince has done. I have a ton of his unreleased music. My alltime favorite Prince recording was from his 1984 Birthday Rehearsal Concert at 5th Avenue. The song is called "Neon Rendezvous". 19 minutes of sheer musical bliss!

"....sitting in this cafe, waiting on my baby.."

Prince was a great musician, but I agree with a lot of you- he screwed himself over by not embracing the Internet, and being overprotective of his music. Basically any other artist of any era I can go to Youtube and listen to their music. Not so with Prince.

As a consequence, I haven't listened to any of Prince's music in perhaps a decade.

It's a shame we will never get to see the Prince version of Radiohead's "Creep" because it's in the vault next to his buttocks pants.

I have that version on CD! ^_^ (the guitar solo at the end was so Godly) Not to mention the time I snuck into the VIP section of his after party, and took this pic:

It's here.
Not associate with Prince but "Prince and the NPG". Use the search.

For the others, who cares, they suck.
Yes, TGE too.
