Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 Review Thread

Wow!

Aw man. I've been burned by overly gushing PES reviews three years on the spin now, so I was planning on holding fire on this one til the price inevitably drops around Xmas but I'm sorely tempted to go grab this now. Really enjoyed the demo.

This is an expensive month!

Is the PC version actually shit or just inferior to the PS4/X1 versions?

Wondering the same thing. How exactly is it shit compared to XBO/PS4?

Very disappointed if this keeps happening, it's like the third time now right?

PC Version the same as consoles?

PC version is still last gen. I guess it'll keep happening until they stop developing last gen console version. And by then, it'll be the next gen and the cycle continues..

This is stopping me from every buying a PES game. And you know it's for 'piracy' reasons and nothing else. Ridiculous.

GAF, I know I'm asking in a PES review thread and it's possible it'll bias responses to PES, but...

I'm less than a filthy casual. I don't follow a single sport. Every few years or so, I get the craving for a sports game, and I commit to it for a month or so. It's been an honestly fulfilling experiment every few years.

I did Madden NFL in 2007. I did NHL in 2011. I'm feeling football (soccer for us here in the US) in 2016.

Since I don't watch any sports closely, I just need to know -- as far as football is concerned, does PES or FIFA hand in the more casual-scaling experience? I obviously have no strong ties to any teams or clubs or anything like that, I just need to know which game is going to scale down so that a completely ignorant player has a chance.

In the past, I've treated my foray into sports games like any video game I have zero experience in... I try to learn as I go. As an outsider, I kind of feel like sports games have really, really tried to hammer home authenticity and realism into their systems, and the "video game" aspect feels increasingly rewarding to those who have ties to the actual sport. I try to look at it like Dark Souls: I'mma get my ass kicked hard starting out but as soon as I adjust to the rules of the game, I hope to eventually ascend and git gud.

I plan to download the FIFA and PES demos to my PS4 and go hands on myself, but I wanted to still appeal to long-running football game fans to see if they could offer some guidance to what to expect from the fuller experience.

Thanks in advance if anyone tries to tackle my question!
Without a doubt fifa imo.

It is much less realistic, but the arcadey gameplay probably makes it better for people like you (and I) who don't follow the sport.

Absulotly love the game but it feels wrong to give Konami money. Might have to wait for a cheap used version, wont be hard for something I'd play less than once a month during friends gatherings.

What improved in the gameplay compared to last year?

Metro said:
Passing is noticeably smoother and more accurate, for example, as too is shooting, which now allows much more control over the amount of power you put into a kick. Although the most significant improvement is the dribbling, which allows such precision control you’d swear the ball was stuck to the players’ feet, as if in footy games of old.

Is this true? Because that sounds very arcade-like.

I think you've taken the best advice we could give already, and that's to try both demos and see what you think. Both games feel quite different this year, and it'll be down to personal taste which approach to the game you prefer.

Both games have good training modes which walk through the controls and advanced moves in the form of training drills and minigames, and you can of course lower the difficulty of the AI initially and then increase through the levels as you improve. FIFA also has sliders which can control aspects like how accurate the AI's shots and passes are, which PES doesn't have - but lower difficulty on PES shouldn't be too challenging, there are 6 levels in total - Beginner, Amateur, Regular (default), Professional, Top Player, Superstar. So you have plenty of scope to move both down and up in skill levels if needed.

There's also the more obvious ways to provide extra challenge in both games (choose a lower ranked team, etc), and PES takes this one step further in Master League (its main single player career) giving you the option to start off with the "ML default" players (a collection of fictional, poor to average players), which makes things more difficult until you can earn enough to start bringing in some better players via transfers, or get promising players in your youth academy.

I much preferred the PES2017 demo but after buying PES16 and having a go at Master League - career is my favourite FIFA mode - I just can't bring myself to buy PES. I know a lot of people legitimately prefer Master League but it's more time consuming, is missing a lot of leagues and has a really poor UI design. I don't have all the time in the world to play it and the creature comforts in FIFA just push it a bit higher for me, just annoyed because the FIFA17 demo feels so sluggish.

The UI isn't brilliant by any stretch, I guess I'm just used to it after years of ISS and PES Master Leagues - believe it or not, last year it was actually improved from previous entries!

It's slightly different again this year from looking at videos, but it doesn't look like a major departure if you weren't a fan of 2016's UI. I find it's something that you get used to with time, though. 2016's UI actually feels quite fast to me now once I learn where each option is sitting within the menus.

I tried FIFA career but I can never stick with it - I think it's a combination of PES offering the "default players" mode (so I can still play as Liverpool, but have to work for victories and don't automatically have a good first XI), and considering both modes are game after game against the AI, I just find PES more fun to play.

I haven't put enough time into the FIFA 17 demo to really compare them this year, though.

PC gets the last gen version.
No PC demo at all.
PC has denuvo this time, which limits the type of patches the community will be able to create.

The game will sell terrible on PC, and they'll blame the fans again.

Last year was my first PES after years of FIFA and I had a blast with it. MyTeam was a lot of fun.

I found the matchmaking to be pretty bad though. It was realy difficult to get matches.

Any changes to MyTeam?

For a second I thought about trying it out. After reading this post...lol nope. Konami gonna Konami apparently.

Really torn again this year.

I was leaning toward FIFA, but now I'm leaning toward PES. Played both demos last night and PES is just more fun to play.

FIFA is good too, though.

I will never ever trust reviews for PES

Doesn't matter anyway this year since the PC Version is shit. AGAIN.

I doubt there's much difference when youre starting out. The basic controls are very similar.

IMO, FIFA's defending controls are super awkward/awful, but the overall presentation is much better (commentary and general style). PES lets you import the real team names/logos/kits and stuff, since they don't have licenses for most of the clubs, but you'll never have stuff like the commentators discussing the real-life issues of the team you're playing against.

I'm new to PES after playing FIFA semi-regularly for the last 5 years , and while I've not got close to mastering the PES controls, I found them pretty easy to pick up while playing the demo.

It probably depends on what mode you want to play. FIFA has the "Alex Hunter" story mode, which might be fun. FIFA really wants you to play (and spend real money on) the Ultimate Team mode. FIFA's career mode is quite easy to play, but has lots of bugs/problems/exploits that reveal themselves after you've played for a while.

PES had problems with online modes last year, and we don't know yet if this year is better. The PES 'master league' seems more in-depth than FIFA's career mode, with lots more tactical options. FIFA seems to focus more on developing the online modes, rather than their offline AI.

My basic impression is that PES feels like being a football manager, while FIFA feels like watching a game on the TV.

I really really want to buy this, but I don't want to support again Konami shitting on us X1 owners. I'd get it on PC but it's still not updated and I bet it has even less players than on X1... :/

I loved 2016 but it was nothing compared to 2015 on X360 where I could just download a few files on a usb pendrive and update everything.

The game calls offside from passes that start from behind the middle of the camp. Passes from behind the middle of the camp CANNOT be counted as offside.

At the risk of coming across like an idiot here...I have no idea what you're talking about?

I don't understand what you're saying here. If the receiving player is in the opponent's half of the pitch and the ball was passed by an outfield teammate during the regular run of play (not a throw in, GK etc.) then offside is possible isn't it? Or do you mean that it's called when the receiving player is in his own half?

When all of the opposing team is on your half of the pitch, and you pass it to one of your own players who is behind the other team it should not be an offside. But the game stops the play and calls an offside, when it should have let the play continue.
