Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney review thread

This game really should've come out before AA5, now the graphics look dated in Level 5's engine and people are far more used to a different VA for Nick. I haven't played it thankfully, but they should've known most interested in this would have.

I'm a sucker for Ace Attorney series, so purchase was never in doubt, but to be honest, I'll probably cheat my ass off on Layton section just to get to Attorney part.

Don't. You'll be doing yourself a disservice by skipping over a large portion of the gameplay. The Layton games always give you enough hints to solve any puzzles in them.

Also, as Layton once said, "puzzles can be quite fun."

How much of Layton do we need to have played before this game? I've played the original trilogy but I haven't gotten to the second trilogy yet.

This Luke is from the original trilogy, right? So I guess you're fine.

Either way, since it's a crossover I doubt you'll need to know much about either series.

I like Layton games but I admit I never finished them. I did finish ALL Ace Attorneys' and still working on Ace 5.

Can't wait for this. Sucks we have to wait though. Hope they announce a release date soon.

Weird Level 5 is publishing in NA while Nintendo is publishing in EU and AU.

The Eurogamer review was fun to read. Won't look at any other reviews in case of spoilers, but it seems clear that I'll really like this game. I'm a massive Ace Attorney fan, and a massive Layton fan so I'm going to be satisfied in both respects.

It was the original reveal trailer from October 2010 that really got me excited about getting a 3DS, so this game has been a long time coming for me.

Never played a Phoenix Wright game, maybe it is time to right that wrong.

Duuuuuuudde!!!!! I wish I was you if only for reason to experience the Ace Attorney games for the first time. The story and suspense those games build up are that compelling. You really need to play those games.

it's already coming out next week? my 3ds backlog keeps growing and growing. when am I supposed to play all this stuff?
8/10 sounds alright

anyway... any good (as in "cheap") places to pre order?

Phoenix bits easier than usual? Ugh. Oh well, should be a good time anyway. This will be my first taste of Layton gameplay too.

Forget vs Layton. Go play the Phoenix Wright trilogy.

Man, I'm so jealous of you! Some of the greatest experiences I have ever had on the medium are on these three games.

The big question: Will I forgive the fact that I don't like Layton games much because I love Phoenix Wright, or will the presence of Layton ruin the Phoenix Wright bits?

Still on the fence on this one. Super reviews for a game like this, though.

I keep forgetting that this is releasing soon, as a fan of both series I feel that I should be more hyped than I actually am.
I guess that's the effect of coming after both the recent 3DS entries for either series instead of before, still the reviews are looking good so I'm pretty optimistic. More Wright and Layton is fine by me.

Does this game fit into either series' chronology or is it a standalone? For story purposes is there anything I need to play first?

It's a standalone spin-off/ crossover, so no previous games are required.
Although it would help to have played the first Ace Attorney and first Layton game to know the main cast (Phoenix, Maya, Layton & Luke)

The game does supposedly fit into the main series' canon; this game takes place after the first AA game but before the second (IIRC). I have no idea if that changes anything, it really shouldn't make a difference.

If it helps you decide, Shu Takimi, the guy responsible for the story in Phoenix 1-3, is doing the story in this game, so it (hopefully) will be interesting regardless of whether Phoenix is a bit overshadowed.

So bought day one.
Hopefully Wright's French dub will be the same as AA 1-4.

EDIT : BTW, JeuxVideo.fr review : 16/20

Pro :
Translated into French (I laughed)
Musics
12 additional episode to download for free
25 hours to complete

Con :
Too easy

I'm little surprised to see how well this was received really. I remember that Japan's reception was a tad lukewarm? Well in any case I'm happy. Now just if they would get to that goddamn NA release date.

This talk about the game being easy really turns me off; AA5 was already pretty bad when it came to taking the joy out of solving a case by bombarding you with hints.
I Just hope they don't ruin the final showdown by making everyone regress to the mental state of a 4 year old child like they did in Dual Destinies.

Fuck me sideways.. I will have to start saving up for a 3DS. Going to have to import a NA one because of SMT IV(Im european).. Damn you Nintendo!
Then you have to wait for the Layton game to hit America...
I'm sure it'll be out before we have any more news on SMT IV

Okay. Watching these videos has gotten me hyped now. I wasn't actually expecting them to
show a girl get burned alive during a witch trial.
Good to see the reviews are looking positive too.

Dual Destinies was my first AA game and I'm currently finishing the first one. I haven't played any Professor Layton games before either, so I just bought the first game used. I'm pretty hyped for this game and it's great that the reviews are good.

Yeah, fuckin nintendo and their stupid region locking.. I hear there are already solutions to remove it but you need a specific firmware version.

Uh, shouldn't this instead take place between the second and third games because
Maya went away for training between the first and second games
?

Does the game straight up allow you to skip the Layton part of the game or are you forced to do them?

I am not a Layton fan, their games makes me feel stupid.

If any reviewers don't mind answering, I've got a few questions about localized names. Namely:

-What's the name of the chief inquisitor (the purple-haired woman)?
-In the sound test (assuming they didn't cut it for whatever reason) what are the translated names of the standard Ace Attorney tracks?

You need to do them. I mean otherwise you would skip the story as well.
Also the puzzles are quite easy and you can get up to four hints per puzzle.
