I listened to several other "medieval folk" bands but nothing hit me like Gryphon's instrumental compositions.

Well, give Gentle Giant a try then if you didn't already know them.

And After Crying. They are not like Gryphon at all, but their instrumental compositions are awesome, and they use flutes, piano, cellos, etc. Try Overground Music or De Profundis.

Indeed, everybody go listen to them,

Steven Wilson just had his first ever concert in Australia.

It was incredible.

I was there, and it was sensational!

It's so rare to see a full on prog concert here. Quadrophonic sound, 6 piece band, respectful crowd, crazy 20 minute long songs.... total bliss!

Kind of old news, but Inside Out Music released a music sampler that you can download for free: http://keepyourprogincheck.com/

The sampler includes songs from latest albums of: (among many others) Devin Townsend, Ayreon, James LaBrie, Haken, Riverside, Anneke Van Gierbergen. It's worth checking out.

Listening the new Transatlantic Album for the second time. Guess I have to listen it a few more times before I can give an opinion. But for now nothing really blows my mind.

So mastodon the thread, 'amirite..?

I've finally bought Ayreon's "The Theory Of Everything". Upon first listen I had mixed feelings about the album, especially since I tried to focus on story and lyrics which, let's be honest here, aren't great; especially since they are mostly literal - singed dialogs/monologues. The more I listen to the album, though, the more I like it. It really helps when you don't concentrate on each separate song and rather listen to it as a whole.

The music is fantastic (I really wish I bought the Limited Edition with instrumental-only tracks) and singers do a great job. I especially like John Wetton's performance as The Psychiatrist and Marco Hietala's as The Rival (even though he received the cheesiest parts).

Has anyone here heard Crippled Black Phoenix? British-GAF might know of what I speak. One of my best discoveries in the recent years. Hard to describe their music, but there's a lot of prog rock in there, as well as many other influences. Here, check some of their stuff out. You will love this shit. Those female vocals in the second link, damn. Chilling.

I agree with you. I was a little surprised at the lack of choruses and such but there is some really excellent music here. The lyrics can definitely be cringe inducing at times (he's a loser, don't you know I'm so much cooler......ugh) but looking past that I really enjoy it. Not up to the level of The Human Equation but still nice stuff. If I had to level a complaint with it, it's that it sounds like some other Ayreon tracks I've heard before.

As to the poster asking about Pineapple Thief: I had heard good things too and comparisons to Porcupine Tree which is probably my favorite band right now. While some tracks can be pretty good, I think they really pale in comparison. I would however recommend Wisdom of Crowds which came out last year. This was written by Bruce Soord from The Pineapple Thief and the lyrics are sung by Jonas Renkse of Katatonia. This is a really great collaboration and I'm looking forward to seeing more in the future from them hopefully.

On another note, Gazpacho's new album is coming out next week which I'm really excited for. Anyone else listen to it yet or anyone else excited for it like me?

Goblin is the fucking shit. They made the Dawn of the Dead soundtrack, right? If that's right they are awesome. Was thinking of trying some LSD with that soundtrack, but the sound might be too eerie.

They also did the soundtracks to some Dario Argento movies that are fucking rad. You ever hear the music for that game Clock Tower? Totally Goblin inspired.

Goblin is a huge part of what made movies like Phenomena and Susperia so enjoyable to watch for me.

I love Gazpacho! Didn't know they had a new album coming, great news, thanks!

I also love the drink, my dad makes the most delicious gazpacho, you can't have just one glass of it.

FYI Anubis Gate's new album "Horizons" is out tomorrow. If you like prog metal check these guys out. Just stay away from their first album, purification.

I had no idea there was a new live album from Anglagard. Any good?
I haven't listened to the whole thing yet, but what I've heard sounds very promising.

Here's the track listing (the first one is a new song!):
1. Introvertus Fugu (Den Asociala Blåsfisken) part 1
2. Höstsejd
3. Längtans Klocka
4. Jordrök
5. Sorgmantel
6. Kung Bore
7. Sista Somrar

Pain of Salvation just announced their 2014 North American Tour! And guess what? Our band is the direct support! Super excited for this. Some of you may remember I was POS' tour guitarist on their 2013 tour and then at ProgNation, so that kind of helped get us slotted into this. Since I know many of you are fans of theirs I'm hoping you come out and say hello. I thought it's a bit cool that a longtime gaf member (fourteen years now) is going on the road with one of my faves. Tickets are on sale (you can buy through ticketfly.com or by going to our band's website below).

Here's the news story on MU: http://www.metalunderground.com/news/details.cfm?newsid=104411

For those curious about the support band Vangough or if you want to get links to buy tickets go here: http://www.officialvangough.com/

Hope you can make it out!

I love the album. Rival has an awesome voice. "No they wooooon't beaaat me, not without a fiiiiiiiight noooo" is one of those cheesy lines, but dude makes it work. Lucassen has a new thing in the works which should come out this year still I believe, but it's not an Ayreon project.

I am going to be at the show in Toronto! Really looking forward to it! I've been a fan of PoS for over 10 years and this'll be my first time seeing them!!

Not sure why but I thought they were a few years older. At that age, their last album may be the ir last.

i saw a band called earthless opening for the sword last week and they were pretty great, very retro inspired and instrumental-only as far as i could tell. the show itself wasn't great since they jacked the volume up way too high (i still have a bit of ringing in my left ear) so it was more painful than fun but it got me interested in the group.

Last Friday I saw Dream Theater on their Along For The Ride tour. It was my sixth time seeing them live.

Holy shit. They were fucking on point.

Great, lenghty setlist, great playing, the best sound I've heard from them, amazing show all around, probably my favorite one so far.

Even if you have mixed feelings about their latest stuff, If you have the chance to see them this tour, don't miss it.

Yeah I saw em open for the sword here in Dallas.

I knew about them prior. Thought they were great.

Going to see King Crimson at the Orpheum Theater in LA on Weds night. Really excited, from Rolling Stone article it's a 7 man lineup.

Rolling Stone said:
The new Crimson lineup features Fripp reuniting with bass god Tony Levin and drummer-percussionist veterans Pat Mastelotto and Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree). The trio will be joined by eclectic drummer Bill Rieflin (R.E.M., Nine Inch Nails), guitarist-vocalist Jakko Jakszyk and woodwind legend Mel Collins.

I saw them back in february and I fully agree. Saw them during the Dramatic Turn of Events tour for the first time but was slightly dissapointed (a fine concert nontheless). But the show they have now is god tier. Perfect lenght, great and balanced setlist and they are in great shape now. Other (older) people that I know that attended more of their concerts during the last 15 or so years also thought it was one of the best shows they had.

Also the DT12 material works very well live, especially Illumination Theory.

I will definately check their new Blu Ray soon (which has just released).
