I've been on a big PoS kick again lately. To me, almost all of their output is so stellar. It's nice going back to it after a break, because it's mindblowing again. Only one I could never get into is One Hour By the Concrete Lake. Despite having one of the coolest album names ever, it just does nothing for me.

One Hour By the Concrete Lake is decent enough.

Entropia (gee, wonder where I got my name from), Remedy Lane and The Perfect Element are all stellar albums.
BE I have mixed feelings on, some of the songs are amazing, some are bland.
Scarsick, Road Salt 1 & 2 just don't feel like the same PoS, but the band had gone through some lineup changes.

First real single from Karnivools new album: "We Are"

I love this band so much!

Never managed to get into Rush, but I listen to a ridiculous amount of prog.

I don't listen to much prog rock, though, it's mostly prog metal. Actually got Circus Maximus stuck in my head at the moment (The One has a hugely catchy riff. Damn), but really gotten into Nightingale recently, and have recently listened to a lot of Scar Symmetry, Pagan's Mind, Dream Theater (surprise!).

Really looking forward to new albums from Protest the Hero, Dream Theater and Ayreon this year.

Going to give Pain of Salvation a try, and various other bands that I see mentioned on recent pages. Very glad that Spotify does recommendations now.

I know it's no Progressive Rock but the new Blackfield Album is out this friday in europe.

"
Aviv Geffen wrote and produced Blackfield IV. Steven Wilson mixed the album into stereo and 5.1 surround sound and appears as a guest, adding guitar and vocal parts. Steven sings lead vocals on ‘Jupiter’.

The new album also includes guest vocal performances from Brett Anderson (Suede), Jonathan Donahue (Mercury Rev) and Vincent Cavanagh (Anathema). Details and links to buy the record can be found here - http://blackfieldmusic.com/blackfields-new-album-iv-is-out-now"

Blackfield IV is pretty decent. I guess I was surprised at how good it was. That said it still doesn't hit I or II's heights or consistency. The tracks Steven sings on are good, and the tracks that are mainly Aviv are decent, too. I don't particularly like 2 of the guest singers. Cavanagh is a great singer, but I'm not sure his song uses his voice that well.

Sense of Insanity's really catchy, though.

doublepost *sigh*

But I'v been hearing the new Haken album The Mountain lately and I think it's great.

Pieces like "Falling back to earth" or "Pareidolia" are 10/10 songs for me. Anyone else enjoying this album?

Haken, to me, is an immensely talented one-trick pony. It seems like every song runs the same pattern, with a 30-second, 'quirky' instrumental break in the middle of a solid song. And trust me, I LOVES me some quirky, but when it's expected, it loses its novelty. I dunno, they're a band I want to love and just can't.

Pretty good album. You can tell they have a lot of influences from throughout prog. Definitely some King Crimson, Gentle Giant, etc. type influences in there. Good album. I like it better than the last ones I've heard from them, which didn't really stick with me.

They released two singles for the new album so far. The enemy inside and along for the ride. Check Youtube(can't remember the links).

The drums in Along for the Ride are too "metalish" for a ballad. Decent song overall, but weaker than other DT ballads.

I liked The Enemy Inside. It's better than A Rite of Passage but not as good as On the Back of Angels.

Hopefully these two are the weakest songs in the album as with most DT singles...

Along for the Ride is pretty good, but that solo is sooooooo similar to one on the last album. From Beneath the Surface I believe.

The new Dream Theater Album has been leaked and DT will have a official album Stream today.

Listening now. It's pretty damned solid. Can't really make a bigger assessment than that now, but I'm digging it. There's some great leads throughout, and I'm really loving that.

I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. I know I'll take several listens to sink in.

Right now it just feels different. Not better or worse, just different.

I have listened to most of the album now, and feels kinda uninspired... definitely weaker than A Dramatic Turn of Events... I guess losing Portnoy really hurt the band musically.

But he wasn't there for the writing of ADToE either, was he?

I haven't heard the new album yet, except for the two singles. Waiting until I have it in my hands.

Not sure, but probably they had a few ideas for a new album before he left.

The instrumental is probably the weakest they've made. Just seems like a bunch of DT riffs put together with a few solos thrown in there. I didn't really find any memorable parts in the "epic" 24-minute song...

It's not a bad album... it just seems that they made this album for the heck of it... feels forced and uninspired to me.

Also, Mangini's drums sound very "robotic"... not liking it.

If anyone's interested, I made a thread for the new DT album
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=679137

I'm honestly preferring it even more than ADTOE, and I actually really loved that album. It's nowhere close to Awake or Images & Words, but it's a damn good album. I didn't actually intend for the OT title as that, accidentally submitted without finalizing it. still can't think of a good one, so if someone can, I'll contact a mod to change it.

From what I've heard it feels like a mostly successful attempt to return to their style from their first few albums. Very impressed.

On the other hand, none of DT's best songs or albums are immediately awesome the first time you hear them. The ones that have real staying power and keep being interesting the longest are usually the ones that take a good few listens before you "get" them.

This.

There are some insane parts. As for me I'm unable to understand the more complex sections on my first listenings.

Done my third run and it's growing.

My favorite news of the year!

The 8th incarnation of King Crimson will be Gavin Harrison, Bill Rieflin, Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto, Mel Collins, Jakko Jakszyk and Robert Fripp.

Writing on his (not yet published) dairy for September 24th Fripp notes "The Point Of Crim-Seeing was of a conventional Back Line – Gavin Harrison, Bill Rieflin, Tony Levin and Pat Matstelotto - reconfigured as the Front Line, with Mel Collins, Jakko Jakszyk and myself as Back Line."

Robert goes on "All the Crims have expressed great excitement at the return to Go! mode. Given the considerable commitments of all members, it will take a year before Crimson is able to perform."

Bill Rieflin mentioned to me that he told Jacknife Lee (REM and Robbie Williams’ producer) of the triple drumming, and Jacknife’s reply: Of course. We know what two drummers sound like! I’m hoping we’ll find out, and have a pile of fun doing so."

In his (not yet published) diary for September 7th Fripp begins "dear brother crims, we have one year to prepare for action of the savage variety, and be in Go! mode for september 2014… but essentially, King Crimson is in motion."

Robert expects that they’ll be rehearsing, in full and small group formations over that period.

The only disappointing thing about this is no Adrien Belew.

Awesome. I feared I would never get to see them live... I was out of town when they did the short US tour in '08. I'm especially interested to see how Gavin fits into KC. I really hope they make an album in addition to shows. You're right though... Tough for Ade. First it didn't work out with Nine Inch Nails and now this.

What are some similar bands to Gryphon? I absolutely love Red Queen to Gryphon Three and their unique and archaic renaissance sound.
