Project CARS (crowdsourcing) racing sim by Slightly Mad Studios (fully funded 3.75M)

Connecticut Hill is probably the best looking in terms of assets. It's still WIP, but it's the most updated circuit, if I'm not wrong. Imola as well, but Imola is a bit more bland in general (not a game fault, but a reality fault).

Bathurst doesn't look very good at the moment due to trees being nuclear bright.

I think so... I remember having Spa at 120x ages ago so I assume it is.

Its not there, we have 10x than 60x, nothing in between.

What about SPA?

Guys which track, weather, settings combo is this? I want to see the game at its best on my screen but am finding it hit and miss currently going through all the track/setting combos to find something that looks amazing.

Cheers.

Thats unreleased stuff. It will become available soon-ish [maybe tomorrow, maybe in 2 months].

edit - WHEN ARE WE GONNA ORGANIZE GAF-RACE? I think we could collect ~10 Full Members.

Team Member here, still waiting on MP!
Upgrade (and hopefully thank me later next year).

Seriously though, probably not coming as soon as you might think:
To recap the plans for access: there are currently no plans to enable access for juniors during development, beyond the occasional specific load test. Team members will get access as soon as stability is satisfactory, which it certainly isn't currently. To be really honest I wouldn't expect that to be very soon. It's actually a lot harder to keep control of testing and feedback data with a lot of users than it is with a few.
Most people here probably don't share my opinion, but I'm perfectly happy with juniors not getting proper mp during the development. I ran into the first troll (only one so far though, so that's good) with the FM unlock after tens of hours of great racing and judging by the forum majority of the trolls seem to be junior members.

I do hope that they'll fix biggest issues with the MP soon so that the Team Members can get to play and bigger races actually work properly. Right now it's best to try to get just a few people and even then not every always makes it to the track.

How's the STM for wheel owners? It really sucks that I can't use mine (going to have to check if it's fixable or if I can get a 25% DZ at the end of the travel).

Can juniors still upgrade? Sorry I'm sure it's been asked before
Off course, you just pay the difference.

Some good news regarding the console versions:
We will try to get the STM functioning on current gen consoles.
That probably won't include the new carcass model that AJ's still working on, but even this current tread model already makes a huge diffrence and doesn't apparently have any notable performance difference.

As for good-looking races, bear in mind that there may also be some DX injector stuff that some people use to get even better graphical quality. I haven't tried it myself yet.

There are also different HDR settings (including turning it off), and using one of the cloudy weather settings -- not rainy, cloudy -- may produce some really nice coloring.

Does anyone else have opinions on the -seta tire model compared to the old Formula A? Impressions generally seem quite positive, which I agree with.

Bah. They're doing what I knew they would but hoped they didn't.

Next time just make it clear when you are asking for peoples money for this that further down the line you're gonna decide to do different builds for different people... You don't play with peoples money.

Has WMD Cars discussed console release dates. I can't wait to play this game, but there is no way I'm going to be able to play it on my macbook. From the web site, it appears that it is coming in the fall 2013. Is this true for consoles too?

What? This was said since the very start, it's even on the tools/membership level page that higher tiers get access to exclusive tracks and cars.

Yeah, they're aiming to release it on all the platforms simultaneously.

They were clear about this from the start. Also, I do not think they would be able to handle the load. Games would crash and their testing would be useless.

Andy Tudor mentioned that possibly around thanksgiving 2013, but it's more about when it's ready than a set date. It could be earlier or later.

I'm a little confused by your post and I don't agree. All members (including junior/team?) just got maybe 3-4 builds this week, practically daily. There were questions about whether full members would get multiplayer access, and they did quite quickly after senior members did, since the development team wanted broader testing and more log reports/feedback. In normal operation, they have been doing different builds for different people forever -- that's one of the perks of being a manager, you normally get builds more often. Am I complaining now that other people have been getting new builds with the same regularity I normally do? Nope. :P

There aren't yet implemented methods to kick players out of a lobby or have safety ratings, and from the limited trolls already that have started showing up with full members, I really think they should probably wait to add junior/team members until they have some system in place to allow people to avoid the trolls who drive backwards, park in the driving line, try to wreck everyone, etc. People who paid more money for their account are typically, in my opinion, not as likely to try to screw over everyone else as people who only played a little. Bear in mind there are probably LOTS of decent drivers and nice people with junior/team accounts! I just speak of the general case.

The other big factor, as mentioned, is that they have been gradually ramping up the number of players to test lag and how their servers handle the load. Lag seemed hardly to exist with manager/seniors, and it is possibly showing up a bit more with full members. I think jumping to throw everyone in could not only flood the forums with problems that will be hard to filter for, but could also cause server problems before everything is ready for the load.

Regarding physics, Andy Garton was working on the weekend today:
Minor correction really, but the (tyre) grip is the same front to rear currently, because all four tyres are the same size. I've fixed this today locally, which along with a reduction in grip for the FA tyre compound to match, makes for a very nice improvement.

So it sounds like early next week there may be a new build (team member+?) for everyone to test with incremental tire improvements. I've hard anecdotal reports that the x4 works well with even the current tire setup since all tires being the same is acceptable for that car. I'm about to try it myself.

I still can't see this hitting current gen if it's that far away for console folks. Has to be bumped to PS4/Xbox 3. This game needs power behind it, not these pathetic consoles.

Hit early next gen before Forza and GT.

That's what I'm afraid of. I never buy consoles at launch but really want to play this.

I'd love to get into this but my PC would die running it, plus I don't have a wheel :(
One thing I've been wondering about (since I'll probably get it on Wii U), are there any shots of the game on weaker hardware/at lower settings?

Yeah timing wise I thought it seemed weird that they'd release for PS3/360. Not that it means that they're not releasing for next gen though, for all we know they could be in the works and just not announced (like the Wii U one was for a while), presumably cause they don't officially exist yet/NDAs/etc.

How do i get into Photo Mode again?
There's a free camera mode where you can adjust depth of field and move the camera around, but I don't think there's any post-processing that's not live. Is the free camera what you want? I forget the key to do it (maybe F-something).

Have they mentioned anything recently about lower end spec racing series'? I vaguely remember seeing something before but it seems like the closest I can see lately in public stuff is go karts before jumping to the 500+hp cars.

Yeah that's what i'm after. F1 offers up a debug menu butt all the others seem to do nothing :/

What? This was said since the very start, it's even on the tools/membership level page that higher tiers get access to exclusive tracks and cars.

This isn't exclusive tracks/cars. It's exclusive access to certain aspects of the game development. This is basically different builds. Also iirc the exclusive cars/tracks was added afterwards.

It's gradual access to new features as they add them, for load-balancing and playtesting purposes. First senior managers, then managers, then seniors, now full members. As I mentioned, it's been like this on a smaller scale every week. Monday-Wednesday senior managers and managers could try the early builds, since they paid a lot more money to be able to do so, and Friday the general audience could try a more polished build. I don't really see it as being unfair, personally.

For anyone with low framerate in multiplayer, make sure you try this, which can help some by turning off the logging: http://forum.wmdportal.com/showthread.php?9993-IMPORTANT-Low-FPS-in-Build-322-MP

CTRL + F, doesn't always activate straight away so push it a few times. Basically, look at shadow changes or light changes, then you know it's active. After that you can look around.

For more keys; http://forum.wmdportal.com/showthread.php?7565-Project-CARS-Keyboard-Shortcuts
Why would it change lighting or shadows? Does it turn on post-processing filters when it comes on (and if so can you apply the same effects for a live drive)?

And that's totally accepted, however what he said I read it as that's not what they're doing at all.

There's a subtle car shadow that disappears, look like an AO shadow and scenery also disappears. Sometimes it also changes lighting a bit. Not a filter, just a limitation of sorts or a bug.

Note the trees in the background and the shadow underneath the car, this is just me hitting CTRL + F - So it keeps switching back and forth.

It's nothing major but it's a way to see when you are in free cam or not :P

There are pictures posted on one of the console threads of pCARS running on an Xbox 360. 3 Pictures of an Audi driving around what looks like an early build of Connecticut Hill, running at 720p & 30fps and grahically looking much like NFS: Shift.

The goal was to release pCARS on the current console with as many graphical bells and whistles the consoles can muster at a steady 30fps. I own Shift and Unleashed on PC and 360 - Shift looks better on PC however Unleashed looks miles better on PC and I'd expect the same from pCARS on PC vs console versions. Andy posted "the console versions will/do look very similar to the PC version. The major difference is resolution (consoles will be limited to 720P). Some textures will also be lower resolution due to the lack of video memory on consoles, but the good news there is that at 720P you don't really need those ultra high res PC textures anyway. "

Edit: Loving the new tyre model so much I upped my membership to Senior level 8)

I didn't actually doublecheck who that quote is from, but I'm assuming it's accurate, and that team members will get access as soon as stability is satisfactory, which it's not at the moment. I'm having races and lobbies crashing fairly regularly. They don't say that anyone besides junior members would be limited from the test. If that is your objection then I can see what you mean, and perhaps it would be nice if it were otherwise, but I suppose my personal feeling is that the junior member level is the "try it and see if you like it" level, with a slight discount off the final product.

There's the Caterham Classic and the Formula Rookie which is a Formula Student class (I'll get to drive one next, actually).

Yeah, the shots were with the old tech, but it looked pretty close to what S2U had to offer. Since I remember people asking about it, I took some shots with the low-end settings at 720p:

The bare minimum, everything turned as far down as possible, but HDR still on:

http://www.abload.de/img/min2a6cdx.jpg
http://www.abload.de/img/min3bedps.jpg
http://www.abload.de/img/min4mverq.jpg
Those settings gave easy 60fps with an old '09 MBP running Windows 7 via BootCamp. Basically anything with a decent multicore and a newer mobile or integrated GPU should be completely playable even without any optimisations. The console versions, however, will not look this bare. It looks very gruesome, but it should run very well with any modern computer exluding netbooks. Just bumping up the texture resolution would make a huge difference though and at 720p you'd have to have like 2GB of shared memory not to pull it.

Lower medium settings, probably something I'd expect the game to run on the consoles as it stands now, but will most likely look (a lot) better when optimised for the consoles:

http://www.abload.de/img/med6cjd5v.jpg
http://www.abload.de/img/med7vocx3.jpg
http://www.abload.de/img/med8adc1o.jpg
Since consoles run on very low VRAM, I tried to keep it as low as possible, reflections and shadows were low and textures only bumped to medium and only LQ FXAA. I'm pretty sure that with the engine optimisations the game will look better on consoles.

And to end the comparison, I snatched some of my older shots of how it looks with what I'd say is the medium settings which give me 60fps with a 5850 and a i920 at 1080p:

http://www.abload.de/img/mediumish175kz3.jpg
http://www.abload.de/img/mediumish249j00.jpg
Those are rather old shots though, taken the with the first implementation of the clouds and do not look quite as good as it does nowadays and are lower than the settings I use currently.

No, I'm not a junior, but I wasn't exactly speaking for myself. It's the principle of the thing.

Juniors were never promised MP and neither is no-one forcing them to upgrade, it's a perk and an incentive of the higher tiers and I think it's more than fair. Juniors already get most of the content at a very reasonable price. I really don't see the issue here.

This game still looks like shift 2

are the physics the same? because shift 2 was not realistic...in any sense of the word.
Eh...I'll post a comparison in a sec, but let me just say you couldn't be much more wrong ;)

As for the physics, even with the old tire model it was miles better than the twitch-fest of S2U and the early preview of the Seta Tire Model seems to be lightyears better than either Shift's, modded or not.

They were promised monthly builds, not restricted monthly builds. And they are forcing them to upgrade, if they want MP.
