Project M completely expunged from Apex 2015 Smash tournament at Nintendo's request

Good. People need to let go and move on already.

People need to stop coming in and specifying games that should be "moved on" from because of arbitrary end of life dating they see that people actually playing the game and enjoying themselves don't. I mean for God's sake I'm hype for Smash 4 and I'll be hype for Smash 5 to infinity. If none of those games play like Melee or Brawl or 4 and people have affection for those play styles down the road, who are you to suggest they move on if that niche isn't ever going to be filled again?

Do you tell people who enjoy Super Turbo/Third Strike that they should only be playing Ultra SFIV?

They don't want a fan mod to represent one of their own franchises at a public event when there's a brand-new game coming out a couple months before. Makes sense, since they have a vested right in how their games are perceived.

It's like Street Fighter at EVO. The newest one (Ultra SF 4) is the main event, while the older titles that rocked (II, Third Strike, etc) are side events. I hope Smash is the same, with Smash 4 being the main event, and Melee/PM as side events.

Disappointing, but expected. I was hoping both Project and Smash 4 could have coexisted at the event (I really like both games), but guess not. Don't think Nintendo will do anything beyond not allowing P:M though.

But if Melee will still be there, people who want to play Melee will be able to. Nintendo's not asking them to remove the other Smash games.

On a related note: Can you get Project M in PAL regions?

Not yet, though apparently 3.5 will be released for PAL regions at some point. Ideally, multiple region releases will be standard from now on, but that probably won't be the case.

Good. People need to let go and move on already.

Let's just hope they don't delay the C&D any longer - the criminals and thieves perpetrating this disgusting violation of intellectual property need to be stopped as soon as possible.

I guess I understand why (they want to promote Smash 4) but I do not approve. There's room for both games :<

There isn't. Its a conflict of interest for Nintendo to allow a mod room as that would mean that they acknowledge and, defacto, approve of its existence which can bite them in the ass down the road.

Tell a Melee player that PM is Melee and they might put you on orbit or something.

PM won't die from this alone anyway unless you believe Twitch chat nonsense. Other tournaments will feature it and 3.5 will get play as usual.

.

Yeah poeple should always play the newest everything regardless of enjoyment.

Actually no, fuck that shit. There is never a need to move on.
In a perfect world, people would be playing 3rd Strike instead of UltraIV at EVO.

Melee fans need to realise the game will die at some point.

Hey it turns out that Super Turbo/Third Strike are not unofficial modifications of a game at an event which the publisher is helping to host.

All official Smash games are still there including 64.

According to the Apex website, they're hosting every Smash from 64 to Wii U there. It's just that Project M isn't being played.
Oh, well... I mean, yeah, this makes complete sense. I love Project M but it's not going to coexist with a current Smash title in a tournament sponsored by Nintendo. My condolences to players actually affected by this decision.

As far as the general thread topic, great point! Unfortunately that has absolutely nothing to do with what you quoted and whether people can or should "let go and move on"

Tell a Melee player that PM is Melee and they might put you on orbit or something.

I was responding to his analogy about Super Turbo/Third Strike players being forced to play Ultra SF4, which isn't the case in this scenario as the earlier Smash games are still available at this event.

The game won't die as long as they keep playing and holding tournaments for it.

Unless you absolutely want to define a game's death by something like "not being featured at EVO or other major event". Then again that idea that a game is either omg e-sports or dead with nothing in between is another problem in itself and isn't limited to Smash.

But he was talking about others telling Smash players to move on from Melee, not Nintendo blocking older games from the event.

Hopefully the smashers that would attend apex aren't just all talk and simply don't go there.
If apex dies there will be plenty of nintendo free replacements.

And hosting Project M is like having a Rainbow Edition tournament at an official Street Fighter event. You can do that for a laugh at unofficial events, of course, but if Capcom is involved, it's going to be stock Street Fighter games.

I wonder, do any fighting game use a modded game at an official event? If not, why expect Smash to?

Well, there's not much you can do with them being a main sponsor. What if a huge tournament audience somehow grew around one of those modded SF2 cabinets back in the day? I wouldn't expect Capcom to let that fly as a main tournament title either if they were the main sponsors of an event.

Nintendo gon' Nintendo. Another example of why Nintendo doesn't get it.

Eh...I don't know how much there is to get here.

Yes, Brawl is not tournament worthy, but altering the game at the core level in order to force it to be tournament worthy isn't necessarily something the creators of the original game are going to want to support, especially 2 months after their new game which IS tournament worthy has hit the scene.

I can't think of a single other game that's been altered by fans that's been supported by the original developer/publisher. Even Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 6, which was completely saved by fans, got little more than a smile and a pat on the head from CC2.

Yup. Even if we somehow fixed Marvel 3 tomorrow, there's no way Capcom would endorse it or the people associated with it.

It's a mod of an old game, so it's to be expected. Hell the only way they can stream it is to remove all the Nintendo music anyway. Sucks, but I'm backing Nintendo on this one.

If they did this to Melee, it would be a totally different story though.

Well, those crazy modded Street Fighter 2 cabinets were enough to have Capcom release their own version with Hyper Fighting. That's as close as you'll probably get to an official sanction.

The big question is - are they doing it just because of the proximity to Smash 4's release, or are they going to make a bigger move toward shutting down Project M at some point down the road...?
If they wanted Project M stopped that way they'd have already sent a cease & desist probably, or at least this is irrelevant to stopping Project M. This is probably more like grudging tolerance, but drawing the line at public events where they'd want more control over what the public sees, and they don't really want home brew and whatnot officially promoted if they can help it.

Okay. I get that...but that still isn't really a response to the idea that Smash players should "move on"because their preferred game reached some arbitrary expiration date. Which is an idea that comes up all the time in Smash threads.

Fucking disgusting, especially from a developer who already doesn't want to cater to the competitive scene.

Installing the mod alone requires you to hack the console.

It's not exactly rocket science to see why Nintendo wouldn't want to promote that kind of stuff.

No console manufacturer is going to allow modded consoles at an official event they sponsor

Doesn't want to cater the competitive scene by sponsoring a major tournament, putting on a college tour of tournaments, and running their own tournaments themselves?
