Project Morpheus E3 2015

This was a massively depressing conference for Morpheus fans. I didn't think we would get a date. Or even a price. I even get not wanting to spend too much time on it. But at least explain yourselves. The way they fumbled smacked of incompetence.

The thing that bothered me was how they kept saying that it was "totally optional" instead of saying something like "we don't have much to show you now but this is amazing and when we do show you you're going to want it". They really want our of their way to downplay it.

Ya I was disappointed, but honestly people who aren't already sold would of been bored. People aren't going to be won over by a trailer, but by trying it (which is what they were pushing).

Seems to be a lot of games for it though.

Mhh soft porn incoming?

When is she taking her clothes off?

In the future there will definately be vr manga porn etc.

This is too obvious.....

This E3 is less VR sided then I expected.

Well supposedly the VR nose works pretty well and that's in fixed position (as if attached to your face).

I'm curious if it would have the same effect on the periphery of your vision as well. Maybe not. Then again, maybe you could contextualize the "nose" as the inside of a facemask.

That research is not that useful - it allowed you to stay on a rollercoaster for 2.2 seconds more before feeling sick again. This talk goes into trying to avoid that kind of idea in favour of having no sickness at all - https://youtu.be/P8ae9a-9g2c?t=13m15s

I was really surprised Sony didn't spend much time on Morpheus and wisely so. Also I expected some release date and price and was disappointed they skipped that.

Need impressions from the floor.

Are there any videos available that could be used with Google cardboard so we can at least get a feel for the games in a vr space?

I wanted to do the same and bought the GCB. Well to say it politely, I was thoroughly disappointed at how bad it looked and there was no immersion/presence. The good news is that folks on GAF told me that there is no comparison between GCB and dedicated VR hardware. So don't expect even a decent VR experience with the GCB.

In the future? They already have this stuff right now

Ya the tracking and everything for cardboard is horrible. It works in the loosest sense of the term.

Not as much buzz around VR - Morpheus in particular than I was hoping for this E3.

Although what we did get was just amazing (FFVII, Shenmue 3, TLG etc) so I shouldn't complain :)

I want Rigs to be successful, but it seemed to try too hard to be an esport, while most other e-sports games start off by simply being a competitively designed game. The sports scene follows after the game.

I'm curious how it plays. I think 3v3 is pretty cool for something competitive.

I think the most e-sports game Sony has is Rocket League, and I wish they'd pay it more attention. That game deserves some major attention by Sony imo

By the way, is there any game that acts as a tourist/rollercoaster simulator?

I feel those experiences can be big, without necessarily being a game

Rigs seems like the best example of a big game, but it doesn't seem like it's funded well enough to be considered really big. Are most these VR games going to be about the novelty of experiencing VR more than being solid games?

I am curious to hear more about Rigs as it seems like the showcase title. Any previews?

This is the biggest Morpheus booth we've seen. They're showing off some 20 games.

This is one of the titles actually running 120hz native right?

Yep, 120 fps native plus reprojection on top to get that extra precision and the lowest latency possible.
Adding reprojection get you a better experience also if you're already running 120 native.

I wouldn't worry too much. When it was reported they might be spending a lot of time in the actual conference talking about Morpheus we all saw the backlash from many of the naysayers on places like Gaf saying in no uncertain terms they don't want this crap pushed on them. I think they were just being diplomatic and ensuring these folk know that VR isn't going to take away from their traditional gaming experiences, but will be additional VR only content. A lot of people seem to be hyper-ventillating under the impression that all the studios will be forced to make nothing but VR games forevermore, lol.

And of course VR does speak for itself. Hands on impressions which will be incoming soon from all the different gaming and tech blogs will (hopefully) sell the vision way better than showing a demo on stage and Sony telling us "believe us it's really really cool!"

Nice one, I've been enjoying the current PS+ version - how do you cope with the 180 degree turns at the end of the ship whilst in VR?

Thanks!

In the VR version we flip the ship in a single frame, it's an instant switch.
Works really well, no motion sickness at all.

It had more effect at walking speed (22 some odd seconds) which was why I originally brought it up. I'm not saying it's the cure or anything. Just curious if there are any other demos that have experimented with it.

For Morpheus, can I play all PS4 game with VR or only specific games? I would love to be able to free up my computer and let my fiancee use it for whatever she wants while I play Horizon or something.

It's going to be VR only games I think. What you are looking for is a Vita + remote play.

Predicts the worst decade for Sony starting 2022
I'm excited about morpheous but the lack of information on it is troubling. I understand they can't demo the game son stage but what about a release date and price?

It's too early for release date and price. We have a release window of first half of 2016 - so a year out.

For the price - I'm sure they're going to watch what the competitors launch at the end of the year and next. Plus they will have to figure Move packing AND the camera. I'm figuring at PSX or CES or GDC.

It's a bit premature to expect pricing on a completely new product concept like vr. I mean how much was Samsung gear vr? And you need a galaxy for that. Getting the price right where the market would bite is crucial. You can't scare the potential consumer away.
