and this is why it's absolutely more than okay. if the majority of these people in these cities want them gone, but are hamstrung by confederate sympathizing republicans (although I repeat myself) then this is the only way to do it.

after all, it is their city.

Durham County 2016 results:

Republican Democratic Third Parties
2016 18.2% 28,350 77.7% 121,250 4.2% 6,534
2012 23.0% 33,769 75.8% 111,224
2008 23.6% 32,353 75.6% 103,456 0.8% 1,088

They don't want this shit.

Patriots tearing down traitorous symbols.

The Confederates were traitors from America that wanted to preserve the subjugation of human life. Their fight for "state's rights" was a fight to preserve the state's ability to keep slavery legal. They were ethical monsters and deserve nothing more than scorn for being the trash that they were.

Fuck their symbols.

Good. Stop celebrating these scumbags.

Fuck their sensibilities. No one in this thread would defend keeping statues of ISIS up in America. These fuckers are no different to me. They fought to continue terrorizing my people. I hope each and every one of them is roasting in hell.

I don't understand America sometimes. Why there is still such passion for a 150 year old war - particularly from the losing side? Is it because confederacy is just a banner for racists to stand behind?

Yes, and if you do a quick Google search, you'll find that places like Australia and Germany have folks flying them Confederate flags in solidarity..shit is bonkers.

100% aren't for historical value.

The only thing 'historical' about this shit is learning from the mistakes of the past, anyone that reveres it as 'part of their heritage' hasn't learned jack shit.

Many of the monuments on battlefields are located where the troops being recognized were deployed, so there is some value in that respect. The addition of plaques or companion pieces to give better context or perspective would be better. Outside of battlefields and similar museums, I don't think we really need any. Especially for people not connected in any way to the location (i.e. why are there Lee statues anywhere outside of Virginia?).

We know that answer, but you get the idea.

I really do want them to come down, but I do think they belong in history museums to allow people not to ever forget about that heinous time period.

I wonder if they can bring down that Robert E. Lee statue, but its pretty huge.

You don't need fucking statues of traitors on state grounds to remember the war. That's what real museums and education is for.

These were put up by racists well after the actual war to intimidate during the fight for civil rights.

This kind of thing happens when the government is out of touch with the people that voted it in. I'm disillusioned with the approach of "lets wait for government to solve our problems". Citizens need to take things into their own hands. If the anyone is hoping to run for office, they'd be smart to pay attention to this and tailor their talking points accordingly.

Definitely. Also most of these things went up in the 50-60's or basically "when the negros are getting uppity and need a reminder." They don't mark anything of historical significance that can't be done with a plaque.

That's the argument I made during New Orleans' own Confederate statue debate.

I asked out-of-towners complaining about how we choose to decorate our city:
how would you like it if we city folk came out to your suburbs and townships and made demands on how you decorate? How about demands that you put up statues, of, say, Obama? Or how about a nice statue of Obama hugging Hillary?

They balked. What we do with our public spaces should be none of their damn business.

Arizona's Governor has announced he will not order Confederate Memorials taken down because "history" 2 of the most recent were installed in 1999 and 2010. "History"

More so near the end of the 19th/beginning of the 20th centuries.

Not every statue is art. All these statues of Confederate generals looking stoically into the face of defeat aren't worth preserving just because "well, statues go in museums, right?" You can preserve history without saving every useless artifact that exists. And these statues are utterly useless. They don't tell us anything that words wouldn't do better.

People should assemble a list of Confederate statues and their locations in case people want to visit them to learn more about their heritage.

This is the carving that was funded by Lost Causers, the KKK, and the fucking Federal government. Georgia refuses to entertain the idea of destroying it because it was carved by the creator of Mount Rushmore. I say we bring it down ourselves.

That is Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and mother fucking Jefferson Davis.

Yeah, in places where the Nazi swastika is illegal they found the Confederate flag a useful substitute. It means the same thing. A heritage of hatred.

I think that's kind of intentional, I recall reading about it "Coupland’s memorial challenges us to make sure we’re not reducing the war to a battle between toy soldiers." It's not just about the war of 1812 it about revisionist history.

Even more perfect for the South.

instead of taking it down, they should just cover it up with fire and a statue of Sherman.

Disgusting. Why don't we just erect statues of Hitler? He's part of history, even though he lost the war with us. I don't see any fucking difference.

Nigga is surrounded by white faces down here. I see them getting angrier and more armed on an almost weekly basis. This shit getting even hotter means me and mines are in greater danger. And I get the strong impression that it'll be people like me that get the brunt of it in comparison to a lot of people making this argument (hell as a Southern nigga, I already get the worst). Now, I a'int saying stand down, if only because I for damn sure a'int, but this general non-concern over escalation, is fucking bullshit. Like come the fuck on

You're right, if you're in a hot zone, I hope you stay safe. I just feel like this escalation is going to come one way or another regardless.
