PS Paddle Keys: Triangle, Square, Circle, and Perp-Lines

Cross-Men are my favourite superheroes, they were formed by Professor Crossavier.

It was easier getting adjusted to colour coded shapes than just the lettering of the SNES before it. Parappa being one of the first games I had on the console certainly helped ingrain positioning.

On topic, I think I got used to the PS buttons pretty fast but it's hard to remember at this point. I do think that from a cognitive psychology perspective, learning the spatial arrangement of 4 shapes should be easier than semi-arbitrarily located AB-XY pairs.

It wasn't something I had to consciously learn, but yeah in the PS1/N64 days it was a tad confusing.

Felt like an old man having to look at the controller to confirm where square was.

I remember some games calling it the "X button" and not cross.

Cross?

X fo lyfe!
And we're done here.

But seriously, I never had a problem adapting to what buttons were what for the Dualshock.

One of the first Playstation games I played at a home and not a couple minutes in a store was Parappa the Rapper. I beat the game in two or three hours and in that time I learned all the buttons quite well.

It may be called the cross button but no one in their right mind says press the cross button or cross to jump or press cross to interact.

Yeah, I've never heard anyone refer to it this way. It's always been X.

I would be curious to know where folks who say "cross" are from and if you've always called it that. Not because I'm saying "X" is right. I just think it's interesting.

the only time i ever used to get confused was when I started using my DS3 on pc and it had XBOX button prompts and I kept forgetting that x was not the bottom button on the 360 controller, it was the left hand button.

The symbols looked goofy when they first came out but Sega ruined everything when they took Nintendos ABXY and reversed the positions of everything but added colors (Dreamcast). Then Microsoft did the same (Xbox) but reversed the colors from Sega. You end up with a clusterfuck of ABXY and colors depending on what brand controller you're holding, except for Sony sitting pretty with the symbols.

So in short Sony made a great call and everyone else's shit is confusing. Get some new letters MS and N

SCE_PAD_BUTTON_TRIANGLE = 0x00001000,
SCE_PAD_BUTTON_CIRCLE = 0x00002000,
SCE_PAD_BUTTON_CROSS = 0x00004000,
SCE_PAD_BUTTON_SQUARE = 0x00008000,

It took me many fucking years because I didn't own a Sony console till the PS3, so when I went to friend's houses to play some PS2 titles I was always confused between square and circle.
