PS1 games that have aged well

Really...? Really?

I'd love to hear an explanation.
WAT? Are you insane? It looked better than any Final Fantasy on PS1 and those are being mentioned all the time.

Visually - yes, PE has aged well.

I just can't really see myself playing through the whole game again.

Ha, I'm playing that right now. Hopefully I can beat it this time and not on the PS4.

Personally, I think the Resident Evil games are still awesome even though a lot of people hate on them. I think the pre-rendered backgrounds helped Resident Evil because some of the prerendered artwork looks better then some 360/PS3 games real-time graphics. Though obviously the character models are rough.

Agreed. Parts of Biohazard 2 & 3 (on JPN PSN) are still great on my HDTV because of the pre-rendered backgrounds. They hold up better than Code: Veronica for example.

Persona 2 (both IS and EP) hold up quite well, thanks quite a bit to their great translations.

I still have fun playing Persona 1, but I'm not about to claim it aged well.

Sure, I guess... but this thread is about graphics :)

Megaman 8

Megaman X4 (and to a lesser extend X5 and X6, since hand drawn graphics >>>> prerendered graphics)

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

and Valkyrie Profile

:lol that looks 5x better than VP2.
Expect that VP2 is the best looking PS2 game :)

I recently completed my Bizarre Creations racing game collection.

The original Formula 1 on Playstation is superb. It's no wonder it sold a bazillion copies back in '96.

YES.
It's a pity hardly anyone knows this game even exists. It was localized, but for reasons unknown it was never released in the West.

2D games obviously.
SoulBlade, Tekken 3 & RR Type 4 still look pretty good to me.
Some games with pre-rendered backdrops stand up OK, like RE2 & Parasite Eve 1 & 2.
Games that used hi-res mode like Kurushi and Tobal 2 tend to look OK too.

Haven't checked, but I think Fear Effect 1 & 2 would still look good.
found a vid too

this game looked intresting from the first time I saw it in EGM

Still holds up. Apparently for 3D PS1 game, pretty much anything that didn't try to be detailed and/or realistic holds up quite well.

I'd say most games that were good in the day have aged pretty well. If they're still playable on a purely non-cosmetic level, then they have indeed aged well imo.

Judging by graphics alone, both 3D as well as 2D ones look good, although the 2D ones tend to get more attention, probably because they were a few generations ahead of the 3D ones if you compare them on their respective timelines. Games like Valkyrie Profile and Cv:SotN look especially great imo.

However, I for one, happen to like the "boxy/blocky" and pixely 3D-models of the PS1 era and I actually think they kind of have a retro feel to them. Makes me all warm inside.

There are, however, those that stand out more than others. Square games, especially FF8/FF9, Chrono Cross and Vagrant Story tend to get my attention graphically because some of the special effects still are top notch, lighting effects in particular. All those summons may be tedious in the long run, but most of them look absolutely stunning. The same can be said about magic and special attacks.

Hopefully this will be one of the games Capcom puts on PSN. I'd definitely pick it up.

Maybe not the best graphical aged games, but both Grandia (the first one) and Alundra (also the first one) are still loads of fun, with great overall presentation, music and gameplay.
Probably among my favorite games ever.

It's not even that different from GT5P and the gameplay isn't as overloaded as with more recent efforts. No 60fps, but the driving is quite fun actually.

Indeed, that was the game that sold me on a PSX, picked it up on release day with Tekken, some great memories there. :D

FFVII
I just prefer the smoothness over the higher poly, but extremely jaggy FFVIII and IX.

Smoothness? The extremely low framerate during the battles really hurts my eyes. The sound effects are also terrible (but the music is still great).

I agree. Have both '96 and '97 games and they're both pieces of the history. Same goes to first Gotham.

But this baby still rocks everything, no matter the time:

I'm glad they don't use these kind of ratings anymore, Kids to Adults was stupid Everyone is an obvious word for it.

on topic I think most of square-soft games aged well, Spyro, crash also aged well.

visually, 3D-wise, almost nothing... FF7... parasite eve, soul blade, MGS... GT... the same titles all over... gameplay-wise there are plenty of games that truly deserve respect, they're countless, from wipeout, to tekken, almost all rpgs, the capcom stuff... too many.

2D-wise = saturn.

spyro not so much. Played it the other day and i just didnt feel good anymore but Crash for sure. Played throw the game last month :)

I really feel bad for the gamers out there that can't play PS1 games anymore due to the graphics. It's a classic library that in many aspects has yet to be matched.
