PS2 Discs & Classics Not Compatible With Emulator On PS4

There's literally no reason for me to care about this now.

Basically a complete waste of goodwill by Sony.

This was a botched announcement from the beginning.

How is having to buy VHS then DVD then Blu-Ray of the same movie any different? I don't like it either but how is it different?

Blu-ray players can, generally, play DVDs. They don't play (S)VCDs but these were honestly shit and that's understandable.

The closer equivalent would be something like this: Apple releases iOS X, it's incompatible with old apps, then suddenly it's compatible but you have to rebuy them.

This uprez is gonna be so definitely worth paying for other games again. /s Atleast Dark Cloud is something new, but still, it's gonna be such bullshit if I have to pay for all the SMT and Persona games again.

More likely: You won't ever get to play the PS2 SMT or Persona games on a PS4.

It would be like Apple willingly withholding Rosetta, their PPC compatibility layer, so that they can wrap up a few programs a week and sell them back to you.

What a useless emulator. Looks like I'll keep using my PC to play PS2 games since my PS2 and BC PS3 don't work anymore.

I do not see a PlayStation YouTube channel last active around the video was supposedly uploaded/deleted. Is anyone able to find it?

All I see is a screenshot of something of unknown origin and a deleted video page without it being clear who uploaded the video.

Disappointed but it makes sense since we're not talking about BC, but an emulation service where the curated list of games are upscaled to 1080p and have trophy support, which is different than having the vanilla PS2 classics on your PS3.

Would've been a nice gesture to have the trophy-less PS2 Classics in a different folder or category than these PS2 games that have had work done on them, but I understand why they wouldn't want to confuse consumers as well as limit the marketability of these touched-up PS2 games.

Like wow just wow. Especially with their bullshit way of putting games on the list.

Just give me some atlus games for like $8

This concept should be simple to turn into something consumer positive...but instead feels like it's going to go over about as well as a turd in a punch bowl.

Considering these games haven't even been officially announced yet, I don't know how anyone outside Sony could claim to know that. Plus, I don't know how that would even work. In order for a trophy to be tied to in-game actions, there have to be triggers that let the PS4 know "OK, the player beat this boss, give them this trophy", and I don't think an emulator would be able to recognize that without specific programming tied to the game itself.

The patent they filed back in 2013 had the trophies being tied to the emulator. I'd imagine it would work similarly to however Retro Achievements works, which are a series of emulators that tie achievements to older games without altering the ROMs.

So the backwards compatibility isn't actually backwards compatibility, it's just selling remasters under a different title. JFC.

I don't think Sony ever claimed they were going to make PS4 backward compatible with PS2? Correct me if I'm wrong.

But really, if people want to play their PS2 discs in an emulator they should grab PCSX2 and use that. Due to the customization options it has, it'll give a superior experience to any PS4 emulation provided by Sony anyway.

I was pissed off when I had to pay 1$ for each Wii VC game in order to make them playable in Wii U mode, this was the end of my buying VC games. Felt like I'm being punished for being a loyal fan.

But you could play them just the exact same as you always did within Wii Mode. If you wanted the bells and whistles of Miiverse and Off-TV play, you could opt to upgrade. I don't find that unreasonable, even if it's not exactly a dream scenario from a consumer's POV.

But if this doesn't give you at least that chance, to pay a fee and upgrade, it's...It's a very odd move from a company that's shown to take a lot of right decisions this gen. Disappointing if true. I say we should wait for more details.

I felt a great arrogance in Sony, as if millions of GameStop contractors suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced. I fear all those PS2 discs have been aquired in vain.

No classics is really disappointing. I know Nintendo pulled this crap with their Wii U updates but Sony didn't think you'd stoop this low. Probably won't rebuy many if any now.

You didn't have to re-buy the games on Wii U. You could pay for an upgrade with more features. This sounds like full on re-purchase

Unfortunately not surprised. Really sucks with the classics, but they can still do it like Nintendo, offer the games for symbolic prices if you already own them on the ps3.

And who is going to take the ISO out of the emulator? It's basically a PS3 game, because it is tied to the emulator which is PS3 software.

They don't need to take out anything from the emulator lol. The solution is really simple, anyone who owns a PS2 classic in his account should be offered a PS2 iso of said game for free.

So, back to the PC.
Not interested in rebuying old games every gen.. Trophy support and online play are not features compelling enough to rebuy.

Good job Sony. No more buying day one digital downloads until it gets a discount.

The reason is probably legal in nature.

I'm guessing it's probably this or technically not feasible.

So much grief over playing 15+ year old games on a new-gen console!

Whatever. I'll wait until the 5th then move on to my PS4 games.
It's because the people who care about this are the "internet/hardcore" gamers that already knew about this before it was unveiled. And now they pulled it back from what everyone was hoping for. They poorly controlled this message

I'm not rebuying the PS2 games I own on PS3. Either we can upgrade to the newer ISOs for free or I won't bother.

Oh? I wasn't aware of this. I wonder how that works technically.

my blu-ray player scales up my dvds and makes them look pretty great so this argument doesn't work

Agreed DVD to Blu-Ray doesn't work but quality is beyond question. DVD is nowhere near as good as Blu-Ray.

Anyway, people freak out too quickly. It just some old games the extremely vocal minority want to play again. The vast majority don't care about BC.

Nothing has been officially announced.

Who could possibly be surprised? Sony wasnt going to waste time accommodating the .000002% of people who still have PS2 collection. Who are all on message forums.

I'm just glad it is happening. Dark Cloud, SSX Tricky, Tony Hawk 2, Devil May Cry, Zone of the Enders 2, etc with DS4 in hand? HELL YES

You can already do this with PCSX2 as well as increasing resolution, texture filtering and a whole load of other enhancements.

Probably for the best so the Dark Cloud thread is actually for Dark Cloud.

Seriously though. Disc is kind of understandable. No classics? Fuck off.
My thoughts exactly. Games I bought digitally on the 360 just show up automatically in my library once compatible, yet Sony wants me to buy games a third time? Fuck right off. I can understand needing to buy a game again when going from disc to digital, but this is just absurd. I have a lot of PS and PS2 classics that I have been expecting to be made compatible, and this makes it pretty clear that Sony is much more interested in making me buy digital games agaon for each new generation. I will not continue to buy digital products from a company that has no interest in supporting those purchases.

added a bunch of ps2 classics to my wishlist in anticipation...

will continue... to anticipate.... psxaseoijfspio

Considering how popular the topic has been on GAF, I don't think that's entirely true.

Even if it was, I still care about it.

I imagine I'd be bummed if I had bought anything digitally on PS3, but I didn't start buying digital until PS4. So fortunately I didn't really 'lose' any purchases and this will just means I can maybe buy some games I missed from PS2 (assuming they are part of this library).

Issue with the ps2 classics. Disc not working can be justified to a certain degree. Should have been cross play or a significant discount if you own a ps2 classic.

I knew it would never happen, but I still wanted to believe.

When I got my PS3 I play 2 PS2 games on it. There is noway I'm playing any on my PS4. I doubt many people still own PS2 disc.

Eh, I didn't expect discs to be supported. PS2 Classics not working is pretty lame though. Luckily for Sony, if I can get PaRappa 2 on my PS4, I will gladly forget about everything else.

This doesn't matter much to me either but I can easily understand why people are upset about Classics not working, especially with how gung ho Sony has been for cross play. Hopefully they at the very least offer a discount for those who have the Classics release.

Goodwill? There was never an announcement. They merely confirmed they were working on something with no more details.

Complete fucking bullshit, but expected with discs, but not even classics? Serious bullshit. What the fuck is up with that? So not only is your digital library of PS3 games stuck on that console, but your PS2 classics as well.

Just curious, how many PS2 classics did you guys buy?

PS2 has the arguably the greatest line-up in game history. It would be nice to play them in decent resolution via digital video connection.

Back to PC.

How si this a waste of goodwill?

We didnt have this before now we do what was taken away?
People are literally going off the deep end because of two generation year old games. Pull out a ps2!! You dont wanna? Pay up either way sony doesn't owe you anything. Those ps3 classics yall bought they are still there on your ps3 like holy crap. Lol
