Maybe they'll be generous like Nintendo and give you a discount to upgrade your ISO to new ISO.
It's the same rom/iso, just different emulator, it's anything but generous, this should be a standard free procedure.

How is having to buy VHS then DVD then Blu-Ray of the same movie any different? I don't like it either but how is it different?
This uprez is gonna be so definitely worth paying for other games again. /s Atleast Dark Cloud is something new, but still, it's gonna be such bullshit if I have to pay for all the SMT and Persona games again.
Blu-ray players can, generally, play DVDs. They don't play (S)VCDs but these were honestly shit and that's understandable.
The closer equivalent would be something like this: Apple releases iOS X, it's incompatible with old apps, then suddenly it's compatible but you have to rebuy them.

Considering these games haven't even been officially announced yet, I don't know how anyone outside Sony could claim to know that. Plus, I don't know how that would even work. In order for a trophy to be tied to in-game actions, there have to be triggers that let the PS4 know "OK, the player beat this boss, give them this trophy", and I don't think an emulator would be able to recognize that without specific programming tied to the game itself.
So the backwards compatibility isn't actually backwards compatibility, it's just selling remasters under a different title. JFC.
I was pissed off when I had to pay 1$ for each Wii VC game in order to make them playable in Wii U mode, this was the end of my buying VC games. Felt like I'm being punished for being a loyal fan.
No classics is really disappointing. I know Nintendo pulled this crap with their Wii U updates but Sony didn't think you'd stoop this low. Probably won't rebuy many if any now.
So much grief over playing 15+ year old games on a new-gen console!
Whatever. I'll wait until the 5th then move on to my PS4 games.
And who is going to take the ISO out of the emulator? It's basically a PS3 game, because it is tied to the emulator which is PS3 software.
That's not the question I asked. Don't derail.
Probably. But is the PS4 actually physically capable of reading a PS2 disc?
The reason is probably legal in nature.
It's because the people who care about this are the "internet/hardcore" gamers that already knew about this before it was unveiled. And now they pulled it back from what everyone was hoping for. They poorly controlled this messageSo much grief over playing 15+ year old games on a new-gen console!

Oh. That must be why the PS3 didn't ship with PS2 emulation then. The reason is probably legal in nature.
The patent they filed back in 2013 had the trophies being tied to the emulator. I'd imagine it would work similarly to however Retro Achievements works, which are a series of emulators that tie achievements to older games without altering the ROMs.
There's literally no reason for me to care about this now.
Basically a complete waste of goodwill by Sony.
This was a botched announcement from the beginning.
my blu-ray player scales up my dvds and makes them look pretty great so this argument doesn't work
Who could possibly be surprised? Sony wasnt going to waste time accommodating the .000002% of people who still have PS2 collection. Who are all on message forums.
I'm just glad it is happening. Dark Cloud, SSX Tricky, Tony Hawk 2, Devil May Cry, Zone of the Enders 2, etc with DS4 in hand? HELL YES

It was leaked and speculated on for weeks. There hasn't even been an announcement.

My thoughts exactly. Games I bought digitally on the 360 just show up automatically in my library once compatible, yet Sony wants me to buy games a third time? Fuck right off. I can understand needing to buy a game again when going from disc to digital, but this is just absurd. I have a lot of PS and PS2 classics that I have been expecting to be made compatible, and this makes it pretty clear that Sony is much more interested in making me buy digital games agaon for each new generation. I will not continue to buy digital products from a company that has no interest in supporting those purchases.Probably for the best so the Dark Cloud thread is actually for Dark Cloud.
Seriously though. Disc is kind of understandable. No classics? Fuck off.
Agreed DVD to Blu-Ray doesn't work but quality is beyond question. DVD is nowhere near as good as Blu-Ray.
Anyway, people freak out too quickly. It just some old games the extremely vocal minority want to play again. The vast majority don't care about BC.
This doesn't matter much to me either but I can easily understand why people are upset about Classics not working, especially with how gung ho Sony has been for cross play. Hopefully they at the very least offer a discount for those who have the Classics release. So much grief over playing 15+ year old games on a new-gen console!

People are literally going off the deep end because of two generation year old games. Pull out a ps2!! You dont wanna? Pay up either way sony doesn't owe you anything. Those ps3 classics yall bought they are still there on your ps3 like holy crap. LolHow si this a waste of goodwill?
We didnt have this before now we do what was taken away?
This news already ruined my Christmas
