PS2 Gems that most people missed

Echo Night Beyond - Excellent survival horror title by From Software. The game involves exploring a haunted space station on the moon to find what happened to your fiancee. There is no combat in the game and it eschews a traditional health system for a heart rate monitor, which goes up when you encounter a ghost or some other sign of paranormal activity, and if you let your heart rate get to high you suffer a heart attack and die. The game is absolutely oozing with atmosphere and is a must play for fans of the genre. The fact that it received mediocre review scores is further proof that mainstream reviewers don't know shit.
Seems like I'm not needed here. :D

Seriously, people of GAF, buy this game. It's really cheap and easy to find (in PAL-land, at least).

Ring of Red

Fantastic game this. SRPG with semi-controllable WW2 tank-mechs? yes plz

For mine, I loved the original Shadow Hearts. It was short and condensed with a refreshing theme, likable main character decent plot and didn't try to drag gameplay out with over-long dungeons (90% of the time anyway)
Yet, people seem to talk about the (personal opinion: inferior) sequel more than they ever did the original.

So I was able to replace my old PS2 (thanks Somesang!) and was thinking of trying out some games that were mostly overlooked. I'd love some suggestions

So for my suggestion:

Outside of Persona 4 this is probably my fave PS2 RPG. Light hearted but fun and the different choices you could make with the characters made it feel like what Chrono Cross should've been when it came to characters. Shame it didn't do better.

Yes, it was a great game, beautiful worlds, story well done, a little bit of a rip-off of Suikoden, but very well done. I wish they do a Radiata 2 for PS3! If I remember correctly, even through the second playthrough, they left the ending pretty open for it.

I'm surprised by all the mentions of this game, as before this thread I hadn't even heard of it and that doesn't usually happen. Got me interested, but the game is $117 on Amazon (though just $70 from the marketplace). Would have to get a lot more excited about the game before I shell out that kind of dough.

(known as Disaster Report in USA)
This is like a survival horror game where the enemy is the environment. This game is based specifically around an earthquake scenario, and it's really awesome.

The sequel is based on floods, but has a very similar sort of feel. It's even better than the first game though, and the multiple characters with crossing storylines are excellent. One of the later scenarios (starring a school student) is completely peripheral and awesome.

I'm tempted to buy a PSP just to play the third game in this series. :(
The first game was much better than the sequel. The sequel had the lowest framerate of any game I ever played. What's the verdict on the PSP version? Wasn't it out on Wii as well?

Those games look like fun. Now finding them in a PAL-region, that will be something else... :(

First person horror adventure with visual quality up there with Silent Hill 3(in some ways beyond), and no stupid action scenes.

Super fun PS1 game... sort of like monopoly but set in a mall.
This needs to be seconded and more. It's way better then any version of monopoly, and the best thing is it works perfect on PSP. It's great for trips and hotel rooms, thanks to the video out :)

Wow, I surprised I didn't see those:

Too many people didn't play this. It's one of the best of "old school" and "modern" ever. Also looking good, simple to play. Superb level design. POWER UPS GOD DAMNIT. Double jump. Perfect lenght. Perfect difficulty.

The most amazing thing about this game was that apart of having a full day/night cycle, every single character in the town had a certain role or task to do during the day. You would see a character wake up, go to the church, then returning home everyday after the dawn. It was amazing to see that kind of behavior by its time, when today we still rpg game in which the townspeople are standing still in a corner doing nothing.

Love this game never released outside of Japan its based on the 5th series of Jojo's bizzare adventure and it is also made by Capcom who made Jojos bizzare adventure, although this one is not a 2d fighter like the first one its more of an arena based one. Each fight you have a certain number of conditions to win the round, you have to play out the battles exactly like in the manga. Amazing game with great cel-shaded graphics and lots of replay value.

All I can say is try to dig out this game it was never released in the USA only Japan and Europe, it is one of my favorite games of all time. Its like an eccentric Resident Evil.

Super fun PS1 game... sort of like monopoly but set in a mall. You go around stocking your stores with various goods, but if anyone buys all of the goods in your store, they can buy the store space and open their own store! Makes for a pretty great time.

Can be had for about 5-20 dollars
Board Game Top Shop. Fun game when everything's going well, the AI will completely fuck you for several turns at a time. It was one of those games released for $10 back in the day. I still have my copy.

A nonlinear RPG with multiple endings where you can customize your mech and get a robotic dog as a party member? Sign me up!!! (unfortunately, dated graphics and complaints of the nonlinearity/lack of story doomed it at retail)

40+ arcade games, many of them in themselves hidden gems, for cheap? Hell yeah.

Lol, it looks like that girl is felating some giant robot who is off camera.

Kagero 2: Dark Illusion (Trapt in the US/Europe), lesser known PS2 entry to the hardly known series of games consisting of Tecmo's Deception: Invitation to Darkness, Kagero: Deception II, and Deception III: Dark Delusion, all on the PS1. Involves capturing and torturing victims for fun and profit (and revenge, but lets face it, mostly fun and profit). Oh, and your frequently working for old Pitch himself in these games. Not the game you want to show as an example of how "harmless" gaming is. I'm surprised they didn't get Mortal Kombat level of hype. :lol

In Trapt, you can assume the role of Queen Allura, a woman framed for her father's murder and forced into exile. After fleeing into the Black Forest, you become an evil trap master, bent on revenge. You can find justice by strategically employing gruesome medieval traps on those that betrayed you. You can play through Story or Survival modes to unlock additional bonus content, including an even deeper story.

Third person shooter that is gorgeous. The best Transformers game ever made.
I've played this. It is really good!

My suggestion:
ghosthunter_medley.jpg

It had some issues mostly with the controls but all in all it is a really solid action/adventure game with some of the best graphics you can find on the PS2.

This sounds amazing. Anyone know where I can get a cheap copy in the UK?

Bought and completed this game after seeing it here and there on GAF. Game has a moody atmosphere and an interesting story
though I find the endings to be a bit cryptic
. I was surprised I didn't mind the lack of combat at all. Pick it up GAF, listen to these people. :D

How about the Maximo games?
Just about done with the first one and I think its excellent. Save/Death system takes some getting used to but it adds tension to the game I think. I often find myself weighing my options when I die, reload and have all my skills but start the level over, or take the checkpoint, loose a life, and my extra skills.

I've already purchased the second and its in the mail, curious if I'll like it as much (supposedly more combat heavy and it seems like you need to buy skills?)

Wow, had no idea the game was so valuable. I picked my copy up from Gamestop a few years ago for like $15.

Anyone who loves the game: is there any trick to playing as Dororo without dying? From what I remember, I got stuck in a canyon-like area with a bunch of wheel-like enemies that you have to use Dororo for and quit playing at that point.

I loved the Kagero Deception games. I've probably glanced over that Trapt game on the shelves not realizing that's what it was. Isn't there a horrid nu-metal band with that name? Gonna have to see if i can track that game down now.
